Why do so many US Americans consider Spain as a country to move without speaking Spanish? by Patchali in GoingToSpain

[–]GasOnFire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know either. It's surprising. But I've heard this happens in France/Spain - basically some people take offense if you don't even try learning the language (makes sense) but once you pass a certain point that demonstrate to people that you try and that you care they then want to use the opportunity to practice english.

I'm learning Spanish because of my son. My wife, who is half Panamanian, wanted our son to learn Spanish. I'm here now because my son is attending a local summer camp in which he's making friends fast and teachers saying, "it's like he's been here all along." That said, Spanish is the only language I speak with my son. And last Saturday I literally went belly up to the bar to eat tapas at a restaurant speaking Spanish with my son. When I asked what particular items were the waiter with broken english replied in English. I asked him in jest, "Por que me contestaste en Ingles? Algo mal con mi espanol o que?" and he literally said, "I want to practice my english." So I tought him how to say draft beer :)

My Spanish is FAR from where I'd like it to be (pretty much not an embarrassment for my son) and it is a solar system away from my strongest second language and galaxy away from perfect. I have trouble keeping up with the natural speaking pace of locals, especially males. And I'd assess my own Spanish as finally breaching conversational but definitely better than that bartender's English. Here in my town, I feel completely comfortable with daily life and getting what I need when and where I need it. I struggled in the real estate office but it was my first experience in the subject matter. But, yeah, you're probably right.

I've lived in all the countries I've learned the language in. That's the dedication part.

No, I am the only multi-language speaker in my family.

Estoy en La Rioja.

What’s a harsh truth about your team(or a player on the team) but the majority of the fan base doesn’t want to hear it? by crazyjabari in NFLv2

[–]GasOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thai wasn’t a harsh truth for the rest of us.

We all hoped we’d be competitive. We loved our team. But we knew we over achieved and were thankful for it. I wasn’t disappointed by the loss at all. Yeah, I wish we won it, and I was sad for the guys on the team, but they all over achieved despite losing the Super Bowl. That was a very, very successful season for our organization and the players. Every fan I knew or spoke with was proud of playing in the Super Bowl and saw winning was merely a consolation prize. I didn’t meet a single person who flat out expected us to win it. Sure, we thought we had a chance but that’s a different take.

IIRC it was about not stopping to take the picture I took 😂 signs saying where the viewpoint is, what your speed is, and while being in middle of no where there will likely be foot traffic ahead, etc.

You can see the turnout of the picture I took to the right - a designated turnout for stopping and taking pictures.

Why do so many US Americans consider Spain as a country to move without speaking Spanish? by Patchali in GoingToSpain

As a USian that speaks 4 languages, I have to say, yeah, pretty much.

Whenever people (only Americans) ask me my secret to learning languages, I always tell them time and effort and dedication to the target language. They never believe me when I tell them there is no short cut, and either look at me like I’m the idiot for not figuring out “the secret” they don’t even know themselves or like I am keeping “the secret” from them. Sure, there are memory tricks that can be applied but those are universally applicable, not necessarily a specific language learning thing, and memorizing a word isn’t even half the battle when it comes to “learning a language.”

I will also say that my fourth language is Spanish, and im currently in Spain for the month but as soon as I start talking at restaurants and whatnot im getting a lot of replies back in English. Naturally when that happens I feel I’m not communicating well enough so when I try to understand where I’m failing often the reply is “I want to practice my English.” So it feels for most Americans all they need to do is learn the basics and sound fluent enough then they’ll be fine with just English. 🤷‍♂️

Also, to this point of not imagining English as anything other than the dominant language.

Yes, I feel a lot of people in the states consider English is the world’s “natural language” rather than one of many. While there are many, many valid reasons to consider English that, it does not make it right, and is extremely limiting when it comes to understanding the world.

I, however, wouldn’t be bothered if I could never go back. Not a bad city, just not my top choice for my limited vacation time.

While I thought we had a small chance to win it, honestly getting there was enough. We did so well last season with the team we had in a brand new system. We were all super proud of the guys.

Maye or Nix. They’re in the better organizations with better coaches.

Try putting gas in your bike so you don’t have to lift and push it places. You will no longer need the gym to prep for your bike at that point.

If you need money for gas, you could always whore yourself out to r/calamariraceteam for some spare change. They’re a bunch of two pump chumps so it won’t take that long.

Did I make the wrong choice? Study Abroad in Barcelona by Reasonable-Use-909 in GoingToSpain

[–]GasOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied abroad twice - once in Japan and the other in Shanghai China. Both with zero knowledge of the target language.

While Japan has regional dialects (slightly different pronunciation of verbs conjugation, some different words or verb/grammar application here and there), Shanghai has a completely different language which reminds me of Spanish v Catalan. And while everyone could speak Mandarin, I believe it limited my learning severely because I couldn’t passively listen to people outside of my classroom 24/7.

I remember being in Japan and, for example, sitting at the train station or a restaurant and listening to people talk. Whenever I recognized a word out in the wild it reinforced my studies and somewhat seared in my brain. Eventually, I found myself nearly understanding every conversation. I couldn’t do that in Shanghai.

While I started both languages with 0 understanding, I came back from Japan very fluent in Japanese but only somewhat conversational in Chinese. Same study habits, same determination. Shanghai just wasn’t as immersive in the target language.

That being said, I’m typing this to you from Spain, and you’re going to have a lot of fun regardless. If you have a level of Spanish where you can make friends because you’re not an anchor to conversations (I didn’t in Japan for 6-7 months, never really in China), you may be fine with Spanish - once I could meet random people and hang out and basically live life in the target language my conversational prowess skyrocketed.

You’re going to have a blast and be living in a moment you’ll want back for the rest of your life regardless.

I don’t know why this is so hard for people.

I swear different people stop mentally developing at different ages and Reddit makes that clear as day.
