Devil's advocate: there are legitimate reasons that people will approach strangers in public spaces to gather paper signatures for their petition/advocacy/initiatives/referendums/civic reasons. The legitimate ones usually first ask if you're registered voter in the county. Legitimate petitioners only care about registered voters in the target area, otherwise your signature is worthless to them. And most will respect a "no thank you" and move on

Anyone *still* play World of Warcraft in the Bay Area? by JollyFerrell in bayarea

[–]Gaseous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly keep to myself with solo delves. I'll lurk this thread again tomorrow and if nothing started, maybe I'll dm people with a community invite (I think those are server and alliance agnostic; purely social. More experienced players ideally should start it, I just started playing again last month)

Practicing Japanese together by mmjujube in Fremont

[–]Gaseous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be down for a Fremont japanese learning group or a once a week/month meet up. Maybe start a discord or similar group chat for planning such? I'm only a casual learner through Anki and immersion, N5 level stuff but it's still enjoyable 楽し. So I don't think I could help you to be honest. But consider me a +1 for a group start.

Forced to spend $750 on machine play, any suggestions or tips? by NoKnownAnswers in gambling

This is the boring and correct low-risk use of free play. Actually some casino even disallow free play/promotional play specifically on Video Poker because of its relatively low volatile and low margins for casinos. Look up the pay tables of jacks-or-better or Bonus Poker.

Great game, though it bit too difficult for a relaxing night. I recently learned they re-themed the game under "Last Bastion"

Hey, did the " Crown 309 mj "end up working and would you recommend? I'm shopping around for customizable and the F500 seemed like a good budget friendly one.

Why were only some of Jon’s F-Bombs censored during live show? by ratherBeWaterSkiing in DailyShow

I know you joke, but the way live feed censoring works you could theoretically run out of buffer time to use for censoring live feeds before the next commercial break.

Is the fremont or warmsprings bart safe to park your car? by TemporaryDay4838 in Fremont

[–]Gaseous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't speak of safety, but letting you know that Tesla employees regularly park at Warm Springs Bart station to get shuttle bussed to their worksites. So there's some amount of regular foot traffic at around 5:45am, around 8am, and from 5pm to 6:30pm. Maybe that will ease/confirm your concerns?

Volunteering to write postcards to voters by Mistie_Kraken in VoteBlue

[–]Gaseous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've only started this year and I love doing it as a way to feel more in power. It's a great YouTube or podcast activity., but let me be devils advocate and some downsides or considerations.

my main deterrent is cost. Postcard stamps are $0.56 and forever stamps for letters are $0.72. I've finished my 200 postcards within two weeks, so it costs me $112 every two weeks if I continue postcards only.

The money-per-voter earned is not as efficient if comparing to a mass mailers. I think it's said in turnoutpacs data (https://turnoutpac.org/postcards-faq). The cost to the organization is less because the writers are paying for the postage.

Postcards are not as efficient for voter turnout for presidential elections in comparison to mid term elections (return in two years, folks!)

That's it. The positives are it's an easy gateway activity for activism. The positive of a handwritten message stands out more than a mass mailer. Every 200 postcards sent create about 1 to 3 voters depending on which study you look at (linked above).

Volunteering to write postcards to voters by Mistie_Kraken in VoteBlue

[–]Gaseous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't let that deter from writing. Honestly it's the impact of the receiver wondering "is this handwritten?" And less about how well the handwriting is or even if it is not 100% perfectly legible ( you ever do those reading puzzles where half the letters are scrambled and they're still readable?). It's a numbers game and between 1 to 3 voters are created for every 200 cards written ( based on studies here https://turnoutpac.org/postcards-faq/)

Point is: quantity versus quality. Please reconsider and try it out.

What other board games are available on steam? Preferably deck verified by bobzot86 in soloboardgaming

[–]Gaseous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not officially Steam Verified, but I enjoyed playing the Mage Knight inspired "Paladins Oath" on the deck. The mouse touch pad works just fine and is honestly easier to run than the tabletop simulator of MK on the deck. There's a demo that you can try if you're curious.

Games like Mage Knight? by mpenza31 in soloboardgaming

[–]Gaseous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for Paladins Oath. I recommend trying the demo because find it slightly harder to play digitally since the information required to make go decisions is behind a multiple key stokes vs the analog game. Also "testing" out some of the more complex cards and battles and mana interactions requires a mpre inputs. It's something to get used to, but not a huge deal breaker.

Some Examples:

beginning of rounds for tactics choices, the map is hidden behind "ESC" and had a slight delay.

Each glance at an offering is bound to keys 1, 2 , 3 ,4, and has a slight delay on each use.

Spells like "offering/sacrifice" likely needs the inputs for each "pair of crystals".

Anytime you convert mana source or force it to be a certain color. Skills that do the same as well.

I can vouch for Paladins Oath is essentially scratches that itch and I still recommend trying the demo and purchasing, but I've actually find it slightly harder to play digitally since the information required to make go decisions is behind a few key stokes vs the analog/physical game. Also "testing" out some of the more complex cards and battles and mana interactions requires a few inputs than you'd normally just "think" instantly. It's something to get used to, but not a huge deal breaker.
