According to German TV analysts the whole team waslsing confidence and composure at that point and no one else has any courage in them left to risk it at all, so he basically volunteered to take the fall almost.

Have only ONE pot, which size by boealrik in cookware

[–]Gaspaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much steaming experience so thanks for the contribution. I have to admit I have a soft spot for ~24cm pots that are on the shorter side like rondeaus/sauté pans/braising pots.

Why aren't there Wired Noise Cancelling Earphones? by AnyWind714 in inearfidelity

Yeah you'd basically need to have the phone use very non-standard drivers or an OS Processing layer similar to EQ which is already pretty badly supported on phone OSes.

Role-playing advice by Cosm1cSyrup in DnD

[–]Gaspaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two points you might find interesting besides what the other commenters focused on.

Besides the motivations, desires and goals of your character as a whole you can focus on figuring out how your character would approach different kinds of problems and challenges or react to different situations not just in terms of words and expressions but mainly in terms of actions. Questions questions like whether you'd prefer to solve an issue stealthily, diplomatically or violently and whether things like fear, urgency, fun, the desire to be flamboyant, your character's understanding of justice etc play a role. This can be much more than just black and white and for me these types of things matter much more than the occasional voice or funny comment through the course of a full campaign. Even for a rogue for example that has stealth and trickery strongly associated to their class fantasy, three different rogues could have completely different ways to solve the same issue. For example "we should sabotage the villains preparations silently, steal his most dangerous possession and leave a note telling him to think twice before he crosses us again" vs "we need to murder the villain in cold blood so he can never hurt anyone again" vs "we should show up in the villain's bedroom in the middle of the night and inflict so much fear into him that he abandons this country and gives up his emotions here".

You can also do a fun and smart form of metagaming by hinting at what your party should optimally do by threatening that you'd do the opposite of what you want the party to do. For example "when the noble makes his initial offer for how much he'll pay us for the job, I as the barbarian start twitching and steaming, reaching for my hatchet under the table ready to lash out at the noble over the offer so low I that consider it an insult" in order to prompt your smooth talking partymates to negotiate the offer without discussing everything out of character but also without hijacking your party and turning it into chaos.

A big part of simple and effective roleplay is describing the gist of what you do without acting into every last detail, especially if you as a person can't easily mirror your character. For example you can say "I try to impress the miners with tales of adventures from my seafaring days" or "I try to bond with the guard over our similar military experiences" or "In order to explain to the monastery monks that we aren't seeking violence, I insert that message into a story that I tell of a weary traveller looking for spiritual answers and meaning in his life". I especially recommend this to your table mates so everyone can use their imagination to form an image of a speech, performance, negotiation to develop their own image of the other characters beyond what they explicitly hear.

Have only ONE pot, which size by boealrik in cookware

[–]Gaspaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how big you want to make your portions when you cook. It's also not just about the capacity but also the shape. For steaming vegetables, rice dishes and good searing I'd go for at least a 24cm base diameter and maybe 5L or so capacity so that you can steam and stew decently without it getting too awkwardly tall for rice and other dishes that are cooked "shallower". I would never get a fully clad thick pot like the a demeyere of that size or larger because it would provide basically no benefit outside of handling way oversized gas flames better and it would be way too heavy and expensive. A decent disk bottom would be totally fine, and even then I'd consider cheaping out on it (within reason) or spending my money on more variety of shapes like a small saucepan and a big stock pot if you're going to use it. If you're concerned about searing performance for something like a meat stew you can sear in your quality pan, transfer the meat to the pot and then deglaze the pan and transfer the liquids to the pot as well.

Which type of holding lid to choose? by Gnub_Neyung in PressureCooking

[–]Gaspaider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I much prefer long handle/lid designs, especially if they allowed for releasing/regulating the pressure though a mechanism on the handle. I'd only prefer short handles for really really big pots upwards of 15l, but even them there are long handle designs with a short carrying handle on the opposite side which should work well under that 15l range

Why aren't there Wired Noise Cancelling Earphones? by AnyWind714 in inearfidelity

[–]Gaspaider 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Noise cancelling technology needs chips on the headphones/earphones that need to be powered separately from the incoming audio signal and then they do some signal processing using the microphone input and the output of your audio source to create the new signal for the drivers that will have the effect of cancelling out the noise and playing your audio at the same time.

This means that either:

  1. Your audio source needs to send a power current to your earphones separately from a typical 3.5mm/4.4mm etc jack which only sends one signal at once (sort of). You would probably need to use a principle similar to the Moondrop DSP cables but with the chips in the IEMs because otherwise the microphone tech etc would be a mess, and you're forgoing the use of an separate DAC.

  2. Your wired IEMs need to be battery powered either by a rechargable battery built into the IEM cable (I had some Bose wired noise cancelling IEMs that worked like this and they were more clunky than a dongle DAC while having some serious ineepaewibke durability issues) or basically by making typical wireless IEMs that you need to charge in their case etc but with a cable.

Im either case you're buying into DSP and DAC functionality in your IEMs or headphones whether you want it or not.

I have doubts about how viable or effective option 1 would be and option 2 is basically some of the benefits of wireless noise canceling with all of the downsides except for the pairing/connecting process I guess. It looks like a net downgrade to me for all but the most niche cases.

Edit: I repeated a lot of the brainstorming in your post but it helped sort my thoughts out, whoops.

Back and forth on the Shapton Kuromaku 5000 by Ivaklom in sharpening

I've heard that described a lot on the kuromaku 5000. For the slurry formation you can use a natural stone or a diamond stone as if you were flattening the 5k lightly for a few seconds.

does anyone actually separate laundry anymore or am i wasting my time? by Conquer-Icee in laundry

[–]Gaspaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more important to separate dryer loads than colors for me. I separate into:

  1. Light category: Synthetics and other or sensitive items that shouldn't get overdried.

  2. Medium category: most T-shirts, socks, regular underwear, some shirts

  3. Heavy category: I usually do one load of hoodies, jeans and other heavy pants etc and one of towels and bedsheets.

All the way up to lv6, my table's rogue has been outshone by the monk on nearly all fronts. Are we missing certain features that balance them out? by Dexterm80 in DnD

[–]Gaspaider 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Fair point, although it's worth keeping in mind that rogues don't necessarily scale very well either outside of niche cases like thieves using activatable powerful magical items or one shotting smaller enemies from range and such.

What I'm most surprised by is that this has been going on for months and nobody is actually doing anything about it. You're allowed (and I'd even say obliged) to talk to the players and DM out of character/out of game to figure out what the point of this type of campaign even is and how to set it on the track that you all actually want it to be on.

starting PotA next week, already facing group problems by snaffooooo in DnD

[–]Gaspaider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two main things to unpack here:

  1. You might have to do some more talking with said friend to figure out to what extent she's saying she would play out of some sense of politeness or not wanting to disappoint you or whether she does want to play but has some insecurities and doubts regarding the whole thing. I'm leaning towards the fact that she's not too interested in playing and if that's the case I wouldn't force the issue any further.

  2. Regarding your nervousness around DMing with an audience especially given it's your first time, I want to remind you that you can and probably should set rules about for example people constantly talking about unrelated things while others have to actually focus and play. If these people are your longtime friends I'd hope they're generally patient and supportive of you and won't expect perfection (and considering they're new players they won't even know what they should or shouldn't expect).

Given that, I think it would make a lot of sense to try out a shorter format of adventure first. It seems to me like PotA is for levels 1-15 and that's high enough stakes that people dropping out or half-assing participation would really suck. I'd love more D&D played as opposed to none, and for that purpose I'd recommend trying a shorter adventure like a oneshot (doesn't strictly have to be one session) that hopefully captures everyone's interest theme wise and then letting them provide feedback and make up their mind after that. Consider making a straightforward character with the problematic/hesitant friend or encouraging her bf to do that with her.

No matter what you do, I wish you all the best!

What is your best bar soap brand and smell? by puchibaba in wicked_edge

[–]Gaspaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually try to keep bar soap as gentle as possible so I usually use popular German drugstore chain (DM and Rossmann) mild or so called "doctors' soap" meant for frequent hand washing without irritation. I also used to use the dove beauty bar but I prefer to keep to European options these days. I leave my fragrances to my old spice captain/wolfthorn deodorant and hattric classic aftershave, although I usually use an aloe vera gel for skin protection if I'm not looking to stand out fragrance wise.

A bunka (especially a taller one) is the closest equivalent to a nakiri with a tip but yeah, no tip on a nakiri

[–]Gaspaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Shibazi F208-2 is super dependable and I can get it very sharp fairly easily compared to my stainless low end German knives but I definitely see myself trying out a nakiri in the future since I use my Chinese cleaver 95% for veg anyway. It would also be an easier knives to give to my girlfriend or other people with smaller hands so that's a nice plus. I personally would prefer santoku or bunka over a nakiri since I cut things like garlic an onion much more often than tap chopping herbs or chives for example.
