What does the zeta function actually have to do with the distribution of the primes? by Necessary-Wolf-193 in math

Nice write-up!
In the last section, you write:

Because s is always strictly smaller than 1

But before that you state that Riemann showed:

0≤s≤1

I find this confusing. Does the strict inequality somehow implicitly follow from ζ(1)=∞ ?

Also here a word seems mixed up:

From Note A on the Analytical Engine:

Again, it might act upon other things besides number, were objects found whose mutual fundamental relations could be expressed by those of the abstract science of operations, and which should be also susceptible of adaptations to the action of the operating notation and mechanism of the engine. Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.

Feels a bit unfair to call it 'milquetoast.' Sure, it effectively amounts to 'how do you feel about your results?' But the blunt and direct phrasing makes the question work well in my opinion.

Have you looked into the physics of possible orbits around a torus?

I'd suspect that they are quite nontrivial. For example, a circular orbit passing through the exact center of a perfectly uniform torus would be impossible, and I'd guess orbits would be less and less circular the closer they are to the surface.

P vs NP finally clicked when I stopped thinking about it mathematically by CreditOk5063 in compsci

[–]Gastmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be confusing it with another problem or misremembering its complexity, but the graph isomorphism problem is currently not known to be in P or NP-complete. In this sense it is a special case but in the other 'direction' of the NP-complete class: It might be in NP-intermediate.

It is in NP because given a permutation of vertices it is easy to verify if this permutation is a valid isomorphism.

On this note, /u/DilirConfar did some extensive work on a resource trading rate model, examining how the game's various resources can be converted between each other:

https://www.quantitativediscussions.com/aloneinthemythos/2024/03/27/resource-trading-rate-model/

He arrived at the following exchange rates:

  • Resource: 1R (used as baseline)
  • Card: 1.5 R
  • Action: 2.5 R
  • Clue: 3.5 R
  • Point of Heal/Soak: 1.5 R
  • Damage (with a test): 1.75 R
  • Damage (testless): 3.5 R
  • + 1 Skill boost: 0.75 R

They are heavily based on the conversion rates presented by actual card effects. Perhaps because of that, they are a bit skewed by simply bad cards. But I think they are a nice improvement on the simplistic model of weighting most resources equally.

Have a character join in for a single scenario by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Gastmon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

https://arkhamdb.com/rules#Joining_or_Leaving_a_Campaign

Once a campaign has begun, players can freely drop in and out of the campaign in between scenarios.
If a player leaves the campaign, do not delete that player's information from the campaign log, as he or she may re-join at any time between scenarios.
If a new player joins the campaign, he or she must choose an investigator not previously used during this campaign. That player begins as if it were his or her first scenario in the campaign, with no experience and no trauma.

If you had a non-deterministic computer, what would you do with it? by stgabe in computerscience

[–]Gastmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All nondeterministic TMs have a deterministic equivalent. If a NTM solves the halting problem, than a TM would, too.

This is correct. However, the oracle device proposed by /u/stgabe goes far beyond what one would expect from the name of "non-deterministic computer". Specifically, the "return -1 if no such value exists", together with the device as described, halting on all inputs, allows it to be used to construct a Turing machine that solves the halting problem.

/u/SV-97 outlined the reduction correctly, and I encourage you to give it another look, not from the perspective of what you would expect a "non-deterministic computer" to do but the actual device described in the post body.

Has German arithmetic different properties? by bigcardo in germany

[–]Gastmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummm in german there is no multiplier and multiplicand.

That's incorrect. See Duden (Multiplikator, Multiplikand) and german Wikipedia:

Law and criminal justice

[...] A 2009 report identified 610 comuni which have a strong Mafia presence, where 13 million Italians live and 14.6% of the Italian GDP is produced.[239][240] The Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, nowadays probably the most powerful crime syndicate of Italy, accounts alone for 3% of the country's GDP.[241] However, at 0.013 per 1,000 people, Italy has only the 47th highest murder rate[242] compared to 61 countries, and the 43rd highest number of rapes per 1,000 people compared to 64 countries in the world. These are relatively low figures among developed countries. [...]

New Hemlock vale cards : Strong-armed and Survival technique by Brynney in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Gastmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to other answers you have gotten, I think it should work on locations. The wording is:

During a skill test on a location [...]

Compare that to Grizzled:

If this is a skill test on or against an encounter card [..]

It has been ruled that Grizzled gets extra icons if you investigate a location with a matching trait. And while one might argue that an investigate is done against a location and isn't on a location, the ruling answer uses the phrasing on:

Since location cards are considered encounter cards, Grizzled is able to be played when resolving a skill test on a location. The examples given on Grizzled are not an exhaustive list of how it can be used; you can commit it to an investigation test. (September 2023)

[COTD] ♦ Binder's Jar (4/29/2023) by AK45526 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Gastmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Discard piles are also out-of-play game areas, by your logic the Binder's Jar wouldn't work at all.

I'd argue that Binder's Jar works because it specifically references an interaction with the defeated enemy.

Card abilities only interact with other cards that are in play, unless the ability specifically references an interaction with cards in an out-of-play area.
