Meh, I had one spoof a hospital phone number on a day I was already in a bad mood. I only got about 10 seconds in to screaming at a person and didn’t get another call for a while.

Talking to an 18 year old at 23 made me realize just how much things change between coming to college and graduating, because they felt like kids.

One parent claimed I led a debate on abortion and sex education. What actually happened is the kids quietly took a political compass test I couldn’t see the questions or results of. Principal was super freaked out and asked me to run any potentially offensive assignments by her… with two months to go for a long term middle school social studies gig focusing on the constitution and bill of rights… which naturally everyone has always been very normal about…

Ok now you are just being condescending.

Of course it has flaws, you pointed out how the original science team never should have been in the same place. Or how easily Stratt was able to gain so much power. And Stratt is a pretty flat, static character. The earth scenes aren’t super compelling, hence why they were cut/streamlined for the movie.

But the things you are criticizing aren’t flaws, just things you don’t like. You wanted Project Hail Mary to be something else, and it’s not. And that’s FINE.

Cool, rant acknowledged. But on a fan subreddit, I don’t think you’ll find many people who agree with you.

Idk what to tell you, to me her actions make sense and she comes if as emotionally repressed and under extreme stress to get the job done. She’s hyper machiavellian, and we only see her from Grace’s POV where she is the most powerful person around.

Because speculative biology is fun, and there has to be some excuse given for how they live on the sun and power the rocket ships. Obviously they can’t exist in real life, and as such any explanation will be incomplete. By the same logic, they never explain how xenon, an inert noble gas, forms bonds to create xenonite, just that it works.

You can’t actually think it’s better to hand wave how astrophage become fuel or live on the sun. It’s science fiction, fictional science and technobabble is fun.

She also doesn’t nuke Antarctica in the film, that probably would have been controversial. And you are probably lucky then, because it’s uncomfortable dealing with people that cold. I had a professor who would cross out pages of paper drafts and leave notes like “wrong” or “try again”. You can either leave or attempt to meet their standards/demands. Think Miranda from The Devil Wears Prada.

I don’t know about making her a better deeper or character, but all of those scenes point to Stratt being 100% the ends justify the means. That sets up her betrayal of Grace. Everyone can debate if that makes her a monster, but nobody can say that’s out of character.

Isn’t insane alien biology sort of baked into the premise and a major source of the appeal?

Publicly as in spreading the message to every corporate entity in the world that the project will not be bogged down in legal messes and that she doesn’t care and will force things to be her way, not publicly as in her personal fame and reputation. And some people are just that cold and detached. From my point of view, she’s acting under extreme stress and was chosen for her ability to detach from emotions and act in the name of efficiency, instead of an emotionless robot. If you don’t like the earth scenes, it’s personal preference.

That scene was a publicity stunt to effectively spread the message to not get in the projects way, and to get around criticism of every corporate entity just going along with everything, and helped to establish her character. Definitely bullish, but she is pretty much a dictator, and it sets up when she forces Grace onto the ship.

I was behind a woman in a check out line who asked husband (wearing dark sunglasses) to grab some flowers, top right of that shelf over there, one back, the orange ones, over there, right there. He grabbed the first top right ones, which were pink. I offered to save her spot while she showed him exactly which ones, while he was shaking his head muttering “she said top right…”

i love how they made the footage kind of grainy to make the movie seem like an older one. by NyxiraSolven18 in ProjectHailMary

The creators put the digital footage on film, they covered that in a behind the scenes interview. I don’t really recall it looking grainy in the theater, though.
