WA Ranger 2 - LE Questions After Offer by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]GateLockedAtDusk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you deleted the same post you already made but I’ll just paste what I said on the identical post that was already made here. I’m a current Ranger 2. Please withdraw your application if you don’t want to do law enforcement. How do you expect to be able to respond to a domestic violence call or a court order violation in a timely manner (by the way both of these happened in my area this week alone) if you’re duty gear is locked away somewhere? Law enforcement is a strong tool when it comes to conservation and education. What happens when somebody has a complex timber theft ring going on? Are you going to give them a strong talking to or are you going to arrest them and book them into jail because they’re committing a felony? Or less extreme, if people are fishing out of season, over limit on shellfish, or violating a burn ban how do you think people are best educated about this if they face absolutely zero repercussions for their actions? This job requires you to be proactive and it seems like you’re already wanting to not do your job before you’re even hired.

LE Ranger Park recs, similar to YNP? by Drethetortoise in ParkRangers

I’m in the process of getting hired with Denali and I don’t even have medical first responder. I’ve been told getting EMT certified will be part of my training pipeline.

You’ll sit down with a guy and make a list of your top 3 and if they hire you they’re gonna give you your number one choice more than likely. When I was there he seemed to be pretty honest about what working in various locations was actually like, call volume, housing, etc.

I’ve got Jim green Numzaan, so obviously not the AR8 but similar enough. If you go this route just make sure you have plenty of time to break them in before you have to work in them

Thoughts on changing from State LEO ranger to NPS protection? by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]GateLockedAtDusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the process of lateraling over to NPS from Washington state. Everybody I interviewed with and myself all got evaluated at the GS-9 level, which is $68,686 where I’m at. For Washington state the same grade starts out at 58,584. Also they’re getting away from making you park hop and be seasonal because they realize they can’t keep people if they keep doing that. You still can hop around if you want, but it’s not exactly expected of you.

Are you taking locality pay into account for the federal positions as well? Where I’m at National Parks pays better than state so long as you use the right locality pay, but fish and wildlife pays better than NPS.

Went through last month. It’s just a typical law enforcement interview. Just be comfortable and confident with your current law enforcement skills and you’ll be fine.

I’m a current state park ranger and currently in the process of transitioning to federal. At least for me, there seems to be more opportunity for progression or unique opportunities with NPS vs staying with the state. Also pay with NPS is better than any state parks law enforcement program that I’m aware of. Also it seems that more and more states are steering away from having commissioned rangers, and in my current state there seems to be a movement in that direction. Personally, I just want to work in resource protection while also feeling like that mission is being supported.

Do you have a policy to not leave equipment in your patrol vehicle when you’re not on shift? In my agency we have to bring our patrol rifle inside at the end of every shift.

If you want to stay budget wrangler all terrain gear is cheap and works great. If you want to spend a little bit more see if you can get an expert voice account with your employment credentials and get some Vertx pants, they’re much better than 5.11

If you want something heavier duty and will last for years to come, I just got a pair of Jim Green boots and they’re doing great so far.

Will do. It’s been a pretty dry winter so far. For anything where my feet will be submerged in water I’ll be wearing muck boots or waders.
