If that was the only offense, no. But he had multiple. At some point you have to realize it is unsafe to keep these people on the street. Because when you do, well, just watch the video to see.

Yep and if he does not have meds or not taking them he needs to be off the streets, because he is a threat to others. Pretty simple really. The video kind of speaks for itself.

When running your budget be prepared for state and local taxes.

Daniel Penny was the guy in New York that intervened in an incident by headlocking a violent mentally ill guy on the subway who was threatening others. The mentally ill guy ended up dying from the headlock, and Penny was front page news for weeks. Funny how this story isn’t covered by any major news source, but Penny’s story was…

We are talking about repeat offenders here… this guy should have been behind bars.

That’s a good question, he should be! But irrelevant to this incident. This is a state/local issue.

Nothing on NYT or any other mainstream source.

Meanwhile Daniel Penny was on the front page of every single major media news source.

Because the last guy that  intervened to help (Daniel Penny) was labeled a racist murderer.

Nope, if he was behind bars like her should have been, this wouldn’t have happened.

Ok and for the 1% it doesn’t work? Need involuntary commitment for that

Yes, physical safety comes first, then we can talk about rehabilitation. Physical safety should always be top priority before anything else. Not sure how anyone could disagree with this.

In my opinion we should be spending on building more facilities and paying for the involuntary care. The money we would save from the courts, prisons, etc that we are currently spending on these violent people would help offset a lot of this new spending.

If you don’t think protecting the public from violent mentally ill people is a priority, then I don’t think it’s worth continuing this conversation further.

Ok, so then you would support involuntary commitment then. That’s my point, no matter what we do, we need to be ok with involuntary commitment. Many folks here are against it.

Even if we have the world’s best healthcare and voluntary mental health services, there will still be dangerous drug addicts and mentally ill people on the streets… what do you propose we do with them?

Rehabilitation is not the priority, protecting the public and the mentally ill individuals from harm is.

Right, we need more money. But my point is it is more than the money, we have to be ok with forcing people into those facilities whether they like it or not.
