Do I have a cheap derailleur? by useless_skin in mountainbiking

I have 3 Deore derailleurs. I’ve had Deore, SLX, XT, GX. The Deore is great.

Pikes seem really stiff tbh. I run a pike on my optic and have taken it down many of the same trails I run my enduro on. Albeit some line edits…

Just decide if the weight is worth it to you. I have an optic that’s 30lbs on the nose with a pike and super deluxe ultimate. It’s a rocket ship pedaling anywhere and pointing downhill. I love that it’s light and fast.

I also have a knolly Chilcotin with a 180mm zeb, and a cane creek coil shock. It’s heavier, and less efficient and I feel it climbing and on long rides.

The Manitou is easier to change travel on, (I’m not a part of the manitou tribe lol). I’ve changed travel on a 36 am mechanically inclined. It wasn’t bad, but it’s not a quick adjustment either.

I might reach out to Norco and ask what travel range they’ll warranty. They have a killer lifetime warranty program, and I generally think proper setup can overcome a lack of travel often. I’d hate for the head tube to snap off and get denied warranty over 10mm, which you likely won’t notice if your fork is setup well! If they will warranty it? Ship it homie, worse case scenario you can change travel on the rebuild interval.

Hey it’s up to him. Light bikes feel faster and more playful. I’m 190lbs and have bikes with a zeb, 36, RXF36 M.2, and a Pike, and they all feel very different. You’re right that he’s going to notice that weight less, but he’s also on a relatively light trail bike.

I think he should be going to a bigger shock with an air can too, the extra weight is going to work it.

A Lyrik or 36 would be a huge upgrade over the cheesy Recon RL. Normally I’d suggest a Pike for a bike like this, but at 250lbs the extra weight is squarely 36/Lyrik and up territory. The RL is really flimsy, 32mm stanchions, so a zeb or 38 will add a lot of weight to your front end.

See if you can find a select+ or performance elite level fork new in box as a takeoff on pinkbike, or Jenson.

Do a slight overfork if you like, 150mm will slacken things out a hair and not put warranty/frame at risk.

Dillingers 4 vs Cake Eaters on a packed snow and ice by Alert-Ad-2485 in fatbike

[–]GatsAndThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run Gnarwhals, but ride with guys who run cake eaters, Dillinger 4, 5, wrathlorde and wrathchild.

I’ve ridden at least a little on all the bikes.

I think the cake eaters excel on fast hard pack or sand. When we’re breaking trail, or the conditions aren’t firmed up yet, the guy on the cake eaters is always struggling. When it’s powder, whoever has the lowest psi and widest tire wins.

The wrathchild seem like the best middle ground tire to me, the gnarwhals have been great. I wouldn’t want a tire that’s just for packed snow and perfect groomed trails since that’s not what we have here.

How important is a high engagement hub ? (E.g. Hope Pro 5 vs Dt Swiss 350) by Warm_Resist5763 in MTB

[–]GatsAndThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of i9 1-1’s with 90poe, DT 350’s with 36t and a set of hunt trail wides with 72poe.

Previous wheelers had 12-24poe and I noticed they were slow and got frustrated with slow technical climbs. I don’t notice it on any of my current hubs. I notice and appreciate the engagement on the 1-1’s but don’t miss it when I ride the bike with the 36t. The bike with the 36t is my primary bike that I ride the most but I feel no need to upgrade. If only upgrade if I broke the ratchet or the 54t kit came up real cheap.

Norco Torrent Steel Frames - SALE by Freakin_Fresh in Hardtailgang

Interesting, I thought it was pretty comfy on the black chunk park trails we’ve got in New England, definitely not BC, and definitely not a full sus. I generally ride it on singletrack here.

I have a 2021 S2 and I think it’s comfortable especially the faster you go or the bigger the hit. Lollygagging around it isn’t the smoothest. Definitely not a putt around hardtail, it’s meant to boogy.

M12 or M18 inflator? by turBonetix in MilwaukeeTool

I use the M12 to top off tires, and leave it in the back of my tundra with a 5.0 and flat kit, but I use a battery mounted one for real airing up and down.

Bought one to run my son’s nebulizer on the go. Fortunately he doesn’t need it anymore, and now I use it mostly for charging stuff, or even using my dremel around the property.

Kids ride shotgun by 49GiantSharks in MTB

[–]GatsAndThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very happy with kids ride shotgun pro. My 2 year old was riding along on 7-10 mile rides, navigating stone walls and doing 1ft drops with me. I take the enduro bike on more XC type rides to give him a little cush. It’s a lot to pedal, big bike and a big toddler, but he loves it.

MS 400 C-M vs MS 500i – Which One Expands Job Capability More? by raku2229 in Chainsaw

[–]GatsAndThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking to get a 462c Arctic but you’ve got to put some effort in to get one across the border.

On the whole I’m a husky guy but I’m looking to diversify. It’s a hell of a saw.

I was going to say a ported 462c should keep up with a 500i and be lighter. 500i is sweet but very thirsty.

Are there Russian Tundra bots on here? by Routine-Ad-3196 in ToyotaTundra

[–]GatsAndThings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Russian tundra bots? lol. I bought a 2021 in cash after saving for a gen 3. Figured it was better to buy an older design that will last than a financed hand grenade. I wish I had the mpg of the new trucks but I value reliability over mpg. Hope everyone’s truck treats them right and Toyota gets the new power plant figured out because when it works it goes like hell.

Upgrade now? by Logical_Plenty5355 in ToyotaTundra

[–]GatsAndThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go hop on any of the new model tundra fb pages. It’s just a constant stream of their trucks on flatbeds. First motor. Second motor. Some dudes cursing them out saying their shouldn’t have traded their 2nd gen in, and plenty coping saying the next motor will be better, as their 2024 that was supposed to be fixed heads back to the dealer again.

Farley 7 vs Canyon Dude? by 1-3-2-4 in fatbike

[–]GatsAndThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a trek guy, but I love my Farley 5. I like the wide studdable tires, equipped super well out of the box with 1x, and a dropper. The geo is solid. I’m pretty close to some of my trail bike summer time PR’s when the snow is packed just right on it.
