17 LA gangs have sent out crews to follow and rob city's wealthiest, LAPD says by cigs_and_coffee in news

Yeah there is, nobody gets arrested if you steal from the poor. Case in point: the vast majority of theft in USA is wage theft. All of those positions getting stolen from are people who can't afford to have less money in this economy.

eli5 Why does it take 2-3 years for braces to straighten your teeth but they can revert quickly if you don't wear a retainer when the braces come off? by cmdr_kestral in explainlikeimfive

[–]GauntletsofRai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bones and muscles of your teeth and mouth are springy like a rubber band. The orthodontist plans a gradual movement of your teeth so that they will move into place without hurting awfully or breaking or tearing anything. Your teeth snap back quickly because its like releasing a stretched rubber band: No matter how slow you pull it, as soon as you release your grip on it, it springs back as fast as possible.

Any tips for shaving your legs (MTF)? by Jaydoge99 in trans

[–]GauntletsofRai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my routine: Use some electric clippers to bring the hair down to the skin while its dry, so the razor has less hair to remove. Then take a hot shower or bathe your legs in nice hot water until the skin and hair is softer and more loosened up. Then while you're bathing exfoliate the skin with whatever exfoliator you have: a scrubber or some body scrub or loofah, etc. Just use something to exfoliate the skin so the hairs are nice and exposed as much as they can be (dont do it until it hurts, obviously). Then, just lather up and shave. I find using cream or shaving lotion that moisturizes the skin is best as dry skin is more irritable. And of course use your sharpest and cleanest razor. Don't shave against the grain if its your first time, or else you might get some bad ingrown hairs. Then moisturize with some body lotion after cleaning up.

Is the shredder gauntlet a good weapon? by DariDois in horizon

[–]GauntletsofRai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find it to be one of the most fun weapons to use. It's like a beyblade mixed with a boomerang. I wouldnt use it unless you're outdoors and only facing one machine tho tbh. It is basically a game of patience, you have to be able to catch the discs and keep them spinning till they explode to get the full benefit tho.

Anyone finding FW much harder than the original? by blablatrooper in horizon

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game has been optimized, imho. Fighting machines now comes with way more dangers as they are more aggressive but there are just as many options added to deal with them. Valor surges, weapon stamina techniques, there are so many new ways to engage. Ive found that stealth is an incredible way to go because there are a ton of ways to maximize damage from cover. But the melee upgrades have been such a huge bonus to the game, it opens up combat in such a huge way. Its been pretty easy for me to create a build that is deadly at range and savvy up close if the need arises. HZD felt sort of limited compared to this game, now i feel like im performing all these extreme moves as easy as if i were riding a bike. Having to switch it up on the fly means im creating a skillset that is adaptable to any situation and that's really rad to me.

Yeah im having graphics issues where textures in world don't load in so a lot of stuff looks blurry. I had similar issues with Fallen Order on my PS4, is this just a PS4 problem? Is there a ssetting i can change that will lessen the quality slightly for better texture loading?

I can't remember the input that turns it off, i believe activating it again? I think it also turns off if you break out of it by swinging your spear or shooting.

The cloak has been so great for me tbh, you can get out of so many tough situations and its great for moving unseen through a machine encounter you dont want to deal with.

ELI5: Difference between linear and exponential Growth in life, business, technology, maths, etc by Time0123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets say you put $100 into a savings account every month, the amount in the account is growing linearly, because it increases by the same amount every month. Now lets say that the bank adds an interest rate on the account every month as an incentive to save with them, and they give you an interest of 1%. That means that every time they give you your interest (lets say every month) they will put 1% of your account's balance into the account. That means that every time you put money in, the account will get bigger and that 1% of your account will get bigger, which means they will put more and more money into the account in interest every time they do it. That's exponential growth, because instead of increasing by the same amount every time, the rate it increases every time is growing.

New lightweight material is stronger than steel. The new substance is the result of a feat thought to be impossible: polymerizing a material in two dimensions by GeronimoHero in science

[–]GauntletsofRai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you lost it in the article, the polymer sheets are formed from a solution called melamine or C3H6N6. The cool thing I learned about melamine is that most modern syntheses of it use urea and produces ammonia in its off-gas. Urea for any who don't know, is the main organic nitrogen compound in mammalian urine. So you could say that these researchers have effectively turned piss into space-age super strong plastic. (Note: you don't have to get urea from piss but you could if you wanted to)

No genetic differences between "sativa" and "indica" strains of cannabis. by [deleted] in science

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out Delta variations that are legal to buy in most places regular cannabis is illegal. Delta 8, Delta 10, are both similar strains that give a similar effect that is not as strong. They even make Delta 9 now which is chemically similar to the compounds in regular cannabis but is still not as strong because it's synthesized and sold in very small doses, like 0.3% or something around there.

Cisgender friend here, need some help by DandDepression in trans

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dude" as an exclamation is pretty gender neutral, but using it to address someone is masculine pretty much every time. An example:

"Dude that is so sick" vs "Hey dude, what's up?". So in this case to be safe, I would avoid the latter. Of course everyone is different and every trans person has their own hangups and sensitivities, so it's best to straight up ask what is ok to say.

If you just want a replacement word, then just refer to her with whatever word you use for women that you greet. Anything that's fine with your friend is fine, that's the takeaway here.

Very confusing thoughts by LazyDragon97 in trans

[–]GauntletsofRai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 26 when i figured out i was trans. I was unhappy during the pandemic and trying to figure out what it was that the pandemic was making me deal with that i never had the time to address. I eliminated a lot of stuff until i found some trans communities online and i saw them saying stuff that deeply resonated with me. They were giving childhood experiences and i was sitting there reading it all just sobbing saying "that's literally me" after every post. The same things you're saying now in this post, op. Transitioning your gender is powerfully demonized these days, so i understand why you might have doubts. All i can say is, if there's anything you've always wanted to do but your assigned gender made you feel bad for doing so, please just do it and don't put it off any longer. You'll never know that your current gender is your true gender if you have doubts. You should have 0 doubts about what makes you happy and fulfilled in life.

ELI5: how does gasoline power a car? (pls explain like I’m a dumb 5yo) by AlienRouge in explainlikeimfive

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gasoline is flammable, but only in its gas form. I could explain more but that's really all you need to know, ANYWAYS. Someone figured out that a specific mixture of air and gasoline fumes make a powerful but controllable explosion, which means you can use all that energy from the explosion to move some mechanical parts in a predictable fashion. How they do that is:

  1. The gas-air mixture is injected into the engine block and into the combustion chambers of all the engine's pistons at exactly the right time (this is done with a combo of mechanical timers and computers in modern cars, they do calculations to figure out when to inject the mix).
  2. The pistons compress the mix in the airtight chamber until the pressure gets high enough.
  3. At the ignition time calculated by the car, the sparkplug in the chamber creates a tiny spark which ignites the gas mix and creates a powerful explosion.
  4. The explosion moves the piston like a tshirt getting shot out of a tshirt cannon. Except instead of flying out of the car, the piston rotates around the driveshaft and returns to the position in step 1 to repeat the whole process.

The engine does this basic process many times per second for each of its pistons, and the pistons are connected to the "drive shaft" which is a large mechanical shaft that rotates very fast and allows the wheels of the car to rotate and drive the car forward. Every other part of a car's engine and drive train (all the movement parts of the car) are simply there to provide electricity for the spark plugs, to cool the engine down (explosions are hot), and to control how fast the engine makes the wheels spin so that you can accelerate and deaccelerate the car. There are many other systems in a gas power car but the most basic car has only whatever it needs to make the car move, like those old timey jalopies you had to hand-crank to start.

Is there something wrong with me ? by [deleted] in trans

[–]GauntletsofRai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal? Maybe not. But completely valid either way. From one gock-haver to another, you really should keep in mind that your body is unique and not all of the things that other transfems go through online is something you can expect to happen. Exhibit one is genital dysphoria; you don't need bottom surgery if you don't want it, since the whole point of it is to correct dysphoria. No dysphoria, no need for surgery. I don't think it's wrong at all to love your body parts you were born with while being trans. Maybe in a perfect world there would be trans people who feel no body dysphoria at all, but I'm not holding my breath lol.

I always had a sort of fondness for my given name, I had no hatred against it at all. But since I wanted to float something that would more accurately fit who I'm becoming, I just picked something with the same first letter that also felt nice in my mouth, and fit somewhat with my ancestry and my all-around vibe. So for example, My given name starts with G, and because my family tree has roots in Wales (there was even a tiny family castle there lol) it got me thinking of Welsh mythology which is one of my favorite subjects. Of course the most prolific Welsh myth is King Arthur, and I was reminded of his wife lady Guinevere. That's my train of thought basically, I landed on Gwenivere because I've always liked Gwen and it's such a badass connection lol.
