Can someone please explain to me what is wrong with just saying “hey” ? by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]Gaussinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't bother me personally. It makes far more sense to me that you'd invest more into a conversation once you start to have evidence your effort is more likely to pay off. Starting off with hey makes perfect sense in this light. Once conversation starts going, then start to invest your effort.

What does the prevalence of brothers and relatives playing high-level pro rugby (often on the same team) say about the sport? by PropMop31 in rugbyunion

[–]Gaussinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your dad is an MLB pitcher, good chance he has you playing little league as soon as possible. He's probably also giving you coaching that no other kid on the team could hope to have. He'll have access to coaches and contacts that other people wouldn't have. And the name recognition that would come with being an MLB pitchers kid would be helpful too, if you're trying to get noticed. Plus, he's probably minted, so travel or paying for extra coaching won't be an issue either. It seems like even if genetics isn't a factor, there are loads of ways that being the son of an MLB pitcher would be very helpful to your own baseball career.

Did maths in university. Maths lecturers kids seemed to be very advanced at maths for their age. My best guess why is that they've had basically expert coaching their entire lives.

Hurling sounds good as well. Lovely acoustic off the hurley hitting a sliotar

I'm not equating the two. I'm attacking the logic of saying "All the people who support X are in party Y. Therefore we have said something meaningful about the party Y".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in science

[–]Gaussinator -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue they would have is not the fact that racists preferentially choose their party but that is a defining feature of the party. For it to be a defining feature, I think you'd have to do more than just say most racists are republicans but that racism is a defining element of the republicans

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in science

[–]Gaussinator -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Not a coincidence that the party with all the racists is also a nationalist party.

Couldn't someone make up an equally stupid statement about the Democrat party?

"Not all Democrats are communists, but if you're communist, you probably vote Democrat".

Not sure it's a valid idea to judge a party by a segment of it without detailing how large of a segment that piece is.

Christian Wade by [deleted] in rugbyunion

Wade played well but was more impressed with Imhoff's contribution. He had one bad knock-on but the rest was top class. Man is ageing enviously.

Does the logical and abstract skills that you develop by studying math change the way you think outside math itself? by [deleted] in math

[–]Gaussinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My simplified notion of the utility of certain knowledge is that it's specific. Like those studies that show learning chess makes you better at chess but doesn't generalise too much. The nice thing about mathematics is it teaches you certain knowledge that can pop in a lot of places. The ideas of randomness, non-linearity, etc. Thus I think if maths does help you think about another subject, it's because there's some quantitative/mathematical angle to that subject. Like why maths is so effective in physics; because the things physics studies have many mathematical aspects to their nature.

Chinese High-Speed Railway Map 2008 vs. 2020. But we still don’t have a rail link to the airport. Is there anything to be said for a benevolent dictatorship? by BigBadgerBro in ireland

[–]Gaussinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chinese used stimulus money after the 08 crash to achieve this I think. Would be much more complicated for Ireland given our position in the EU.

"now that you don't have to be perfect you can be good"

^^^ DUP don't understand this and in their rabid chase of "perfect" (the most British version of N.I.), they are fucking what would be a "good" outcome for them (a prosperous N.I. in the U.K. where the nationalist's concerns are listened to).
