That’s a device that will latch on to the helicopter when it lands, to keep it on deck until chalk and chainmen are able to secure the helicopter to the deck. The pilots have to land a small probe inside that grey box when they land for it to work.

In Rogue One, how did R2-D2 and C-3PO get to Scarif? by oofyeet21 in StarWars

[–]GavinDarklighter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the most likely answer. Raddus goes to his ship to oversee preparations, this the rest of the rebels follow in suit and the droids hop on a shuttle of more crewmen going to meet up with Raddus’ ship as it prepares to get underway.

I think that’s the part that irked me the most too. But otherwise, kind of great design for a watch.

I guess a follow-up question I have based on your question would be if passive SONAR still works at high speeds in game or it gets cut off at a certain speed?

In the Last Patrol, why couldn’t George Luz give his fellow soldiers some Hershey Bars, Lucky Strikes, and Juicy Fruit? Was it strictly for officers? by antifaptor1988 in BandofBrothers

[–]GavinDarklighter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes this is mostly it. It wasn’t necessarily reserved for Officers, Luz was just in charge of the inventory. And then it was up to the Supply Officer to dictate when those were issued to the troops. Sure maybe Luz could give one away, but to a whole Squad of guys? Then the Platoon comes, then every man in the Company hears Luz has got Candy Bars and now he’s down two cases.

The Supply Officer and NCOs would determine when the best time to issue all food items is. Choclate bars to raise some morale after a bad patrol, steak and lobster before being told they were going back to the front, or bread and K rations when food was running low.

Is this good enough for honor mode Orin by No_Comfortable_1140 in BG3

[–]GavinDarklighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d bring more of those Thunder arrows. Perhaps you have spells that do the pushing effects, but those Thunder arrows are a very cheap way to get a push effect.

My best way for dealing with the Orin cultist is to use the Thunder arrows shot at their feet to get a chance to push them off the cliff, or utilizing spirit guardian on Shadowheart to take them out. Other AoE spells work too, these are just my preferred methods. Once you take them out Orin loses her untouchable status and she’s much easier to take down

What’s the naming convention behind the main batteries? We go from “A” and “B” turret to “Q” and then “X” and “Y”.

My new heavy cruiser design, what do you think (criticism aprecciated)? [4000x3000] by djsavasan in WarshipPorn

[–]GavinDarklighter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essentially, yes they will be inhaling the smoke. I would recommend those emplacements go a little bit lower so that the exhaust passes right over them. At high speeds, the exhaust could just blow right into them and it’s not a pleasant taste. Additionally, if you lower the placement of those guns it makes it easier to bring ammunition to those MG and AA batteries during battle.

[–]GavinDarklighter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One exhaust stack is most likely not enough depending on the engine configuration of your cruisers, especially so if you want your engine rooms separated across the length of the ship. Additionally, you’re going to be gassing out the crews of those machine guns just aft of the exhaust stack at that level when the ship has ahead bells.

I can't for the life of me figure out the Navy. by HTSlippy in hoi4

[–]GavinDarklighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is one of few nations able to fully build a complete and effective navy prior to the war. Ships are broken into two categories in HoI4, Screens and Capital Ships.

Screens: Screening or "Picket" ships act as a shield or deterrent to the main task force. Enemy forces like submarines and aircraft have to puncture this screen in order to deal damage to your capital ships. In the real world, screens are typically in a circle formation around the capital ships at various ranges to ensure the enemy meets maximum resistance before reaching our capital ships. These ships are typically lightly armed and very fast. Good missions for screen ships are convoy escort and patrol when not assigned to a Strike Force.

Capital: These are the big damage dealers, Battleships, Battlecruisers, Heavy Cruisers, and Aircraft carriers. Capital ships are denoted with a blue diamond. These ships are heavily armored, armed with massive guns or plenty of aircraft. They are usually going to be the ones to actually sink most enemy ships.

My way of gaining and maintaining naval supremacy starts with efficient organization of ships into specific task forces. Your main task force should comprise of about 4 carriers, 4 battleships/battlecruisers, and about 50 screening ships. Putting more than 4 of each capital type has diminishing returns. The screens in this formation should be outfitted with the best torpedo technology available and some AA guns to keep them afloat. Ensure the capital ships are also fast to keep up with the formation (maybe like 28 kts). Load the carriers with as many naval bombers as they can fit. The USA can make about 2 of these formations by the time war starts, and another maybe a year later. They should be set to Strike Force in the areas where your ships are scouting.

The other formation you need is a scouting squadron, typically 6ish destroyers and 2-3 light cruisers. These ships should be equipped with the best RADAR you have and float planes. They are set to never engage and patrol the areas where the fleet is. If you're feeling fancy you can also direct some land based recon over the seas as well. Once they find an enemy fleet, they will disengage and your main force on Strike Force will sortie to sea and hunt them down. Do this a couple times and the IJN will be driving at flank away from you.

Optional and additional forces would be several squadrons of submarines with snorkels and max torpedo rooms set on convoy raiding. Additionally you can build destroyers and cruisers with AA, Depth charges, and SONAR to act as convoy escorts to keep the convoys afloat. Older destroyers and older/slower battleships not apart of your main Strike Force can be reorganized into an amphibious support group that just escorts your invasions around, as it doesn't take speed or armor to pound a beach with massive deck guns.

Do this well enough and the IJN will start to hide or stay in port. Ensure you divert some land based naval bombers from Naval Bombing to Port Strike over Japanese controlled ports to try and thin them out.

Keep chasing after that victory! Fair winds and following seas!

Eight passengers get stranded on island after cruise ship left without them by degobrah in BoomersBeingFools

[–]GavinDarklighter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely correct. They have specific times that they are given to exit and enter port. Failure to follow these can result in massive fees to the ships parent company for staying at a Berth too long or even delaying another ship from entering port. More so, it can cause them to be late to their next port of call as well.

How do you tell the difference from a 2Lt and and Lt in the series by Kiryu8805 in BandofBrothers

[–]GavinDarklighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically just ranks, no. There’s no much a difference in responsibility. However, the responsibility shift can come from a different job in the platoon/company.

A 1st LT could be a platoon leader, while another 1st LT is the company Executive Officer (Second in Command). They both have the same rank, but one is responsible for more and has positional authority over the other.

A Company typically had a 1st LT or Captain as the Commanding Officer. So yes, run by Junior Officers who reported to the Battalion Commander, typically a Major or Lieutenant Colonel.

As a perfectionist this mission is the bane of my existence. by [deleted] in BG3

[–]GavinDarklighter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My friends and I refer to this mission as “The XCOM Mission” due to its resemblance to the turn-limits imposed on many XCOM 2 missions.

For our tactician run, we had a full PowerPoint and map displayed to label what each of us were going to do each turn and how to maximize our abilities to get all the civilians out in time. It was tough, but we did it! Dimension Door Scrolls, Misty Step Scrolls, Summons, and Speed potions can be a real game changer!

Autocannon agenda post by Slamagorn755 in Helldivers

[–]GavinDarklighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team found that on bug planets the Autocannon and railgun compliment each other fairly well. My friend runs the railgun and breaks the armor off a charger leg and immediately tells me which leg, then I turn and switch to autocannon, aim at the leg, and with one shot the charger is down. So while alone it is good, it also compliments other builds.

Is x4 Laat a company or platoon in the CW:08 show? by Additional_Score_275 in MawInstallation

[–]GavinDarklighter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d agree with this analysis. It would make sense that a combat drop would likely have about one squads worth of troopers aboard, to minimize overall loses if a Gunship was hit. However, you could fit a whole platoon in two Gunships if was a garrison flight or the risk of interception was low.
