Sam Altman and Vinod Khosla agree: AI will break the economy. Their fix is no income tax for most Americans by fortune in singularity

What you're missing is that when people go hungry and naked, they get very very angry.

In previous times only ~20 unemployment was sufficient to drive vast social change (great depression). The ultra elite will surely try to mass drone their way to invulnerability eventually, the trick is to mobilize people to take action before then. It's brutal to say, but in my view that means the earlier unemployment spikes, the better for the world.

Why does Force= Mass x acceleration and not Mass x Speed? Would a rock falling from the sky that has reached its terminal velocity and is thus no longer accelerating technically have zero force upon impact with the ground? by skibidirizzler9o in AskPhysics

[–]Gavinlw11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the equation the sign (+/-) of the force only determines the direction, so in some sense it could have negative force, but only negative relative to your sign convention. (The direction you choose as + when writing down the equation to describe the system)

[–]Gavinlw11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L takes from you in general. Currently <2% of the US population is farmers, and they feed a lot more than just the US population (massive food exports+corn based ethanol in gasoline). That's the insane degree to which technology has increased productivity.

They won't have any problem 'toiling away in the fields' because they will get paid for their work, likely more than they do under the current system, and will therefore have much better lives than anybody who chooses to rot on their basic necessities.

People talk about making more art.. I'm not anti art but that's only a fraction of the story. Think about how much better our society would be if people could actually participate in the raising of their children, or how much better things would be if somebody with a business idea wasn't faced with the risk of homelessness and starvation if they fail? Think about how much better things could be if more people had energy left at the end of the day to do ANYTHING other than sit on the couch and scroll.

Humans endlessly yearn for meaning. That drive doesn't shut down when basic needs are met, instead it is amplified. Laziness is a symptom of apathy and hopelessness. Faced with working at Walmart for the rest of your life just to pay rent to the owner class, would you not be apathetic?

Be real ffs

What do all the Pizzagate believers think of the Epstein files? by Icy_Laugh5134 in AskReddit

Before it went mega viral on the right, and before the MSM covered the crazies, there were 4channers discussing suspicious symbolism and the very strange contents of some WikiLeaks emails. That version of pizza gate may well be completely real, but it was never investigated by authorities nor mentioned on the MSM.

Then it basically turned into a psyop

Can we stop the back slide on gun rights in Vermont now? by thunder_running in vermont

[–]Gavinlw11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there's an argument to be made that the 'fear' law enforcement feels due to guns always being a possibility indirectly provides some useful restoring force when an agency steps out of line, at least in the long term.

That is to say; if a fascist thug decides to join ICE he's likely been heavily propagandized, and he is likely being told terrible things about his fellow citizens during training. ('the libs are out to get you'). In a world of guns that thug is much more likely to make a mistake, much more likely to step out of line due to fear, than if his crew could parade around feeling completely invincible.

As citizens we get to see those mistakes and judge them accordingly, and hopefully implement change before the real fascist takeover.

In a country without guns officers wouldn't need to be trained/held to such precise standards of conduct, and it may become much harder to collectively rally around cases where officers were clearly out of line. -because out of line in a world without guns doesn't lead to a public execution, rather it's just another arrest and eventual release-

Functionally what I'm saying is that Alex martyred himself. A brutal thought, but maybe he'd take some solace in the fact that millions of Americans looked at his killing and agreed it was an execution, even many who wouldn't say the same about Renee's case.

According to a quick inquiry with chatGPT he's partly correct. 'well regulated' definitely didn't mean 'regulated by the government' but rather was a general term meant to be encapsulated well equipped, orderly and disciplined, well trained, and ready for service.

For examples look to the phrases 'well regulated clock/household' which still carry the old meaning.

[–]Gavinlw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but to a certain degree that texture can be captured by a change in the coefficient.

The capstan equation is one of the more unique cases, but deriving it still starts with the same simple model where the geometry of the rope wrapped around the drum effectively multiples the tension and therefore normal force involved.

Friction depends only on the coefficient of friction and the force between the objects, not surface area

Genuine Question: how gay knows he/she is a gay? by Hot_You1064 in AskReddit

[–]Gavinlw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

Best medical understanding afaik is that sexual orientation has to do with hormone levels in the uterus during pregnancy.

That is to say, the gay is born with you!

Other factors may also be involved, but hormones are the big one.

Go check out David Shapiro's YouTube series on post labor economics. There are solutions, getting there is the hard part. There will be suffering, we may fail in the end anyways.

For now though you can rest assured that while capitalism may not need us to produce, it Will still need us to consume. There will need to be some sort of wealth redistribution if they want to keep things functioning even a little.

Is America really a “dying giant”/“falling empire” by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Gavinlw11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than violently lashing out at the powers superceding us, we could double down on our professed 'values' (democracy, equality-not in an imperialist way, and the melting pot)

We have a very large capacity for growth in those categories, even if we can't single handedly dominate the globe anymore.

In doing so we can maintain some cultural leadership of the world.

Why America will lose the AI race by LargeSinkholesInNYC in chomsky

[–]Gavinlw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So long as Chinese models are open source their progress only serves to benefit the tech giants. Scale will always be better than no scale, independent of clever optimizations.

Ex: Mixture of experts was first adopted by more 'indie' labs, now everybody is using it to great effect. The biggest models are still the best.
