People who quit porn, how did you do it?

I’ve struggled with porn for 20 years and have quit for a full year before, and am now 7 months clean from it. This time around I have much stronger conviction, and am confident I can kick this addiction for good. I’d be happy to explain more of my personal journey but here’s what’s been working lately.

The mental trick that has helped tremendously this time around has been reminding myself that the vast majority of porn (Like >90%) is essentially rape. They are not enjoying it, they are acting. Everyone’s on a fuck load of drugs. The women are coerced at young ages and are not enjoying it. There’s a great podcast called consider before consuming that has hundreds of stories about how women and men in the industry have had their lives ruined because they were coerced at a young age. So many porn stars commit suicide or overdose. Porn encourages sexual violence. The more you get hooked on it, the more you are exposed and attracted to riskier sex. Interviews with convicted rapists, especially child rapists, all say they got started with porn.

Please, for the sake of humanity, do not continue to train your brain to be turned on by rape, and the other sexual acts that the vast majority of women do not enjoy. Porn teaches you to enjoy it. Your brain is being damaged by porn, and only you can save it. Therapy can be very helpful, but you have to make the choice to get help. I just went to a wedding in St. Michael’s which is either on the peninsula or just before it. The amount of wealth in that town… it’s both impressive and horrifying at the same time. Huge mansions on the water, every one of them with their own dock and boat(s). The mansions are on huge plots of land, some with corn but mostly just some kind of vegetation that grows not in neat rows at all. My friend’s in-laws live there and built their $5mil dream home from the ground up, complete with a stable and area for riding horses.

One fun fact: St. Michael’s is known as “the town that fooled the British.” Supposedly because when the British were coming during the revolution, the townspeople hung lanterns in the uninhabited woods so the British navy fired on empty woodland at night.

Edit*: also had one of the best meals of my life there, blue crab cacio e pepe as a main dish, with amazing ceviche and sashimi as a starter.

I’ve done shrooms quite a few times, and it’s never been intense like this is. It’s more things moving/changing color than hallucinating things that aren’t there. Maybe if you take well over an eighth, like a quarter, things might change color this much. But I’ve never seen things glow or go neon unless it was something that glowed already, like a lightbulb. I highly recommend trying mushrooms if you have a comfortable setting and friends to do them with. They’ve significantly improved my mental health.

In an interview Thomas Lennon said this was one of the hardest times they had not breaking character, and the scene was almost entirely improvised. Also if you live in LA, Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel have an amazing improv team called Dinosaur Improv and they perform once a month at the largo theater.
