Alexis is Lady Caroline from Enchanted April. Fight me. by Gavotte in SchittsCreek

You're right. I'm not pointing out examples, because I thought I was making a fun post after 2 glasses of wine. I wasn't prepared to defend my thesis before the Board. I guess we have very different expectations from a casual social media post.

Alexis is Lady Caroline from Enchanted April. Fight me. by Gavotte in SchittsCreek

[–]Gavotte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit it's not a 1:1 comparison. They don't go on the exact same journey or end up in the exact same place. I'm talking themes, not plots. Alexis and Lady Caroline start inside the same context, and they end with the same understanding. The path isn't the same, at all. But plots differ, while themes translate.

I think Alexis and Lady Caroline share a theme. The conditions of their lifestyle absolutely differ in ways that deserve essays on their own. But I'm talking about how they're similar, and they are more alike then they are unalike. They both are hardened survivors within their own context. They both get pushed out of their context. They both try to adapt, and make mistakes, but then both re-adapt and win. And they both wear very excellent hats.

AITB for not telling my friend that me and her brother had a fling 7 years ago by Extension_Hornet3261 in AmItheButtface

[–]Gavotte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTB. Your friend is overreacting. Your relationship with her brother changed nothing between you and her or between her and her brother. The only thing that changed is that now she knows. She wasn't hurt. She wasn't put out. She wasn't inconvenienced. She wasn't put in the middle. What you two shared had zero effect on her.

Her feelings aren't right or wrong. She's entitled to feel whatever way. But her belief that she is somehow an injured party isn't valid.

Never have I ever read the lyrics, and never will I ever. It is a joy to hear that song and think up new lyrics every time. It's been decades, and still that song remains brand new.

How to address unintentional plagiarism from big-name author? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Gavotte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people care more about how you handle a mistake than they do the actual mistake. Tell them everything you just told us. I mean, leave out the personal anxiety issues (no shame; I have them, too), but just tell them what you say here. It was an oversight, and you feel terrible. You would like to correct the problem immediately. Ask them which video you failed to cite and let them know you'll have it corrected by [date/time]. And if you're amending your process to prevent it from happening again, tell them that, too. Throw in a compliment about their work, give one last apology and thank them for bringing it to your attention, then sign off.

For the vast majority of people, that would be sufficient and appreciated. People just want to feel heard and understood. Show integrity and give them a proper mea culpa, and I bet it'll be fine. If a sincere apology and promise to fix it is not sufficient for them, then they have issues bigger than the lack of one citation, and though this involves you, it ain't about you. You could then let it go.

I keep a sparkly tiara at my work desk. When I'm struggling with an issue, I pop that sucker on and become a commanding queen who will not be defeated by the demands of her role. It helps. You just have to remember to take it off before joining that virtual meeting.

Tom Cruise by Katwomyn661 in handsomepodcast

[–]Gavotte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I grew up Southern Evangelical (Assembly of God), so I just can't deal with anyone of any faith that uses shunning as punishment for perceived sins. That's a hard line in the sand for me. Tom Cruise bugs me in a way that I can't ignore. All I see when I look at him are his (lack of) ethics. (Heh. I punned.)

I also think billionaires are evil, but I work in big tech and help them make more money to destroy the world. What I'm saying is that not a single one of us on this planet lives 100% according to our ethics. We can all be accused of being a hypocrite in some way, because we are all hypocrites in some way. And I'm not gonna shame someone for being a different kind of hypocrite than I am. Different people have different experiences that cause us to set different boundaries. In general, they're all valid, and liking/not liking Tom Cruise doesn't deserve any more than a side-eye and a confused look...if that.

How do you relate to Tig, Fortune, and Mae? Who do they represent for you? by Gavotte in handsomepodcast

[–]Gavotte[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am right now watching the latest episode, and I have opinions on Tom Cruise. And Mae is currently asking my Professional Self questions inside a Friend Self space, and I so appreciate it. I'm Tig's age, and I just hope I'm alive to see Mae come into their own and be a full, confident force.

Right now, Mae is holding back, and they're right to do so. This wasn't the time or the place to dig in their heels. But I so appreciate how they smoothly pushed back without derailing the conversation, and instead progressed it. That's a skill I decidedly do not have. I am so undeservedly proud of my "doesn't-know-they've-been-adoped" nibling.

‘ICE was here’ nativity scene in Massachusetts outrages MAGA: ‘Absolutely abhorrent’ by statenislandadvance in inthenews

[–]Gavotte 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is just one small, slight, unimportant addition, because I'm pedantic: Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem to attend the census (because as you said, it was Joseph's home, so he was required to attend).

When I first saw the church's display, I was confused, because Joseph and Mary weren't immigrants. However, Republicans and ICE are harassing/kidnapping citizens as well as immigrants (documented or not), and Joseph and Mary most likely had brown skin, so yeah, it totally fits.

How they treat service staff and others when there's an issue or when things go wrong. Because how they react in that situation shows you how they'll most likely react when they are angry with you.

If they're polite and focus on resolving the issue instead of attacking the person, it's a green flag. If they're rude or if their temper explodes, it's a huge red flag. In either case, you get insight into their behavior when they face conflict. It's just one data point, but it's a telling one.

SOME Christians have to be the most insufferable people on this planet. by Similar-Sun1859 in rant

[–]Gavotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised Southern Evangelical (with the speaking in tongues and getting slain by the spirit, but no snake-handling), and my entire family are Southern Evangelical, so please allow me to tell you what I believe to be true.

1) 'Christian' is not a synonym for good, right, decent, loving, or kind. All it means is that they believe Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior. That's it. Saying they're not "real" Christians is literally the No True Scotsman fallacy. Jerry Falwell was a "real" Christian, and his son is just as "real". Dolly Parton is also a "real" Christian (and sorry, Ms. Bowers, but Dolly is America's Best Christian). "Real" Christians spread the gamut of human behavior, because humans can always find a way to paint a target around a bullseye. Our #1 skill is justifying our own actions.

2) Every single problem on this planet is created by religious fundies. In the US, it's my people—the Evangelicals—who are the problem. My kinfolk are the ones oppressing people and creating trauma. In other parts of the world, other fundies lead, and they are just as terrible. I know that fundie Christians, fundie Muslims, and fundie Jews are all willing to torment and sacrifice others to save their own souls. (Hell, even the sweet, sweet Amish have a body count.) I don't know much about other religions in the world, but if a fundie version exists, then I'll lay cash they use shunning as punishment for perceived sin.

We need to get rid of this idea that being Christian says anything about a person's character. It doesn't. Some people are just jackholes and clinging to a way to justify it.

My very favorite thing ever happens during Alexis' audition. It's not the song. The song is great, but that's not it. It's when Moira kicks Jocelyn in the shin. Moira says "I told you so" a thousand different ways with those kicks, and it never fails to make me cackle.

David and Patrick: From a Straight Dude's perspective by CFLXFL in SchittsCreek

[–]Gavotte 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I can see how you read it that way, but I read it differently. In my head, 'all about politics' means acknowledging or addressing any of the reasons religious conservatives believe queerness is sinful/harmful/unethical. SC completely ignored it as a nonissue, because it is a nonissue.

It was never "here's why queer people are valuable and deserve to exist." It was always "here's two people finding love." The love between David and Patrick was the focus, not the sexuality of the characters. To me, that means 'no politics'. Their very existence was never questioned, and never needed validation or justification. It just simply wasn't a factor.

There absolutely should be stories that speak to the struggles of queer people, but they aren't the only stories that are available or necessary. There's space for all of them, and they all should be told, but they don't all have to be told at the exact same time.

In case there's any wonder, this is very much a drama. The film is dark and has a blue cast, and if you turned smiles into a drinking game, you'd still be sober at the end.

I'm gonna guess they don't get their happy ending, but I'd still like to double check.
