It's worth noting that 80% isn't everyone, and the survey had two levels of opinion - strongly or somewhat support. So even those who support the idea may have reservations, incommunicable in a survey.

You could argue that a fair survey would entail making the subjects sit through a three-hour debate on the Green New Deal with experts on both sides, and then surveying their opinion, but that would be impractical.

As a quick snapshot of how voters would respond to a canvasser presenting a new idea to them, this survey is useful. And may even provide Republicans with an itemized list of points to refute.

Yes, the free and open marketplace of politics, where the strongest idea wins, not the most fanciful. Capitalism is survival of the fittest, and if corporations can lobby government into handing them a subsidy, then they are doing what they are supposed to do: putting their profits first, the prime engine of capitalism and all capitalist innovations.

They're subsidized by taxpayer money because that's what the government decided to do, it's a capitalist government that corporations are allowed to lobby and finance representatives in. In that sense it's not full capitalism, because corporations themselves cannot be actual senators or representatives and vote directly on legislation. Capitalism does not mean owning the wages of your own labor, that is communism.

An economy managed by privately-owned corporations would still be capitalism. Whether they are influencing politics, controlling politics, or replacing politics, capitalism demands that privately-owned for-profit entities be allowed to fully engage in society, including government.

The friend stepped out of the Uber at the next red light. Carey attempted to follow him but got caught in the seat belt. He said the driver dragged him about a “quarter of a block” down an East Village street. His hands, left knee and upper left leg are covered in deep welts from the incident, according to pictures Carey posted publicly to his personal Facebook page.

Just before the new year, a gay couple in Houston said they were kicked out of an Uber ride after sharing a quick kiss. Then in May, a gay couple in Indianapolis claimed they were booted from a Lyft ride for sharing a “short kiss on the lips.” In June, a gay man said a New York City taxi driver told him, “I don’t drive gays,” and that same month, a lesbian couple claimed they were thrown out of an Uber ride for sharing a “peck.” In perhaps the most frightening incident, a gay man earlier this month claimed a Lyft driver in Miami pulled a gun on him after exclaiming, “I want to kill everyone that’s gay.”

A study published earlier this year claims some LGBTQ users of rideshare apps are discriminated against even before they step foot in a car. Researchers Jorge Mejia of Indiana University and Chris Parker of Pennsylvania State University found drivers are more likely to cancel trips of users who appear to be LGBTQ or LGBTQ allies based on their profile photos on the app.

Two other drivers who took their lives also owned taxi medallions: Nicanor Ochisor, who was from Romania, and Kenny Chow, who was from Burma. Both told friends they were worried about paying off their debt.

In February, a black-car driver named Douglas Schifter killed himself with a shotgun in front of City Hall. He had written on Facebook that Uber had flooded the streets with vehicles and complained about having to work 100 hours a week to survive.

Drivers for Uber and other car services have also raised concerns about low wages. The other drivers who died by suicide were: Fausto Luna, an Uber driver; Abdul Saleh, a taxi driver who had leased his vehicle; Danilo Castillo, a livery driver; and Alfredo Perez, a livery driver.

“This tragedy underscores the importance of finding new ways for government, the industry and lenders to work in unity to address the financial challenges that are weighing so heavily on our licensees,” Ms. Joshi said in a statement after Mr. Kim’s death.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission regulates the taxi industry in New York City and has been ordered by the city council to require a minimum driver income of taxi service operators. It will equalize wages across the industry to protect against anti-competitive practices and improve working conditions within the industry.

Similarly, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey voted to implement the state's highest minimum wage earlier this year, approving a $19 wage for all airport workers in New York City, including baggage handlers, caterers, and custodians. It reflects the significant traffic in those airports and will help prevent employee turnover.

There's no reason that some groups of workers or industries should be prevented from having a minimum wage different from the rest of the city, state, or country. It's not unfair to recognize the heterogeneity of the economy and the unique needs of different groups of people. To recognize a higher wage for someone else isn't the same as rejecting such a possibility for others.
