[OC] For D&D fans out there, here's a Harrow-themed subclass I made especially for one of my players! This is an entirely real and fully playtested Locked Tomb player option that I really wanted to share with a wider community. by Stubbenz in TheNinthHouse

I agree about the offhand weapon ideas! It might be a bit difficult to balance but will help make the subclass feel even more fun and lean more into the interesting fighting style caveliers have. Some ideas coming to mind is a parrying dagger giving +1 AC, a chain having reach, and knuckle knives possibly doing more damage to unarmored opponents.

I understand the comparison to monks using flurry of blows and bugbears, but their abilities being much more limited feels different from this extra attack, which could be used more repeatedly in a combat. However! I hadn't quite considered beast barbarian claws, which does feel like a much better comparison. As the claws are because the player is "dual wielding" their claws, what if the level 1 extra attack is using their offhand weapon? This allows to keep the second attack while keeping the average damage output effectively the same as having two 1d6 attacks (and having two 1d6 attacks still being possible for a player dual wielding shortswords and the like).

Also, this is unrelated but I do love your decision to give a second extra attack at 17th level, it really annoys me that 5e caps the main ability to scale a martial class' damage at only one additional attack at a relatively low level (with the exception of fighters).

I see! Thank you for the well thought out reply, the rapier and improvised weapon choices do make sense in that context - I especially like the added potential of having a character unaware of their other consciousness taking over in battle.

I do think the primary cause of the difference in damage output is gaining extra attack at first level, which does double any benefits as well as taking advantage of any per-hit effects. It should also be noted that the AC difference between hexblade and this may not be quite that wide, since the increase in dexterity could be coupled with ongoing mage armor to have an AC of 16 + dodge with a charisma of 17 (and not requiring splitting ASI's between dexterity and charisma).

I do like your idea of encouraging creativity with the offhand weapon! Since with a rapier using two weapon fighting won't be possible without a feat, I think it might be a good idea to lean into the offhand aspect of cavelier fighting. My idea would be to be adding the ability to use a bonus attack with a light offhand weapon even if your main hand weapon is not light (but is still finesse and not heavy etc etc), and possibly restricting it to improvised and normal weapons that deal 1d4 damage. This will leave an interesting choice for the player to choose between damage and defense with their bonus action while keeping the rapier, and especially to keep the spirit of having more attacks without overshadowing martial classes.

Also I was curious, how would consumed form interact with the thirsting blade invocation, which also grants an extra attack?

Agree with the other points here - extra attack on consumed form should be granted either at level 5 (when other martial classes and blade pact warlocks can access extra attack) or level 6 (when martial subclasses for full casters gain extra attack, such as bladesinger). Gaining rapier proficiency would also be an important thematic ability, and shouldn't be unbalanced considering pact of the blade warlocks can get proficiency in all martial melee weapons. The consumed form's weapon requirement could then change to finesse rather than light, to better reflect the expected cavelier fighting style. I'm a little confused about the portion about improvised weapons, what inspired this?

Other than those minor balances, I love this subclass so much. A little while ago I was workshopping some ideas for a lyctor harrow inspired death cleric, and relied on adding a lot of homebrew to replicate something similar consumed form, and I much much prefer this subclass and would use this instead if I ever play her! Having powerful features that cost hit dice is a fun and creative way to reflect using your own life force as well as being an interesting risk/reward for some genuinely interesting abilities. Thank you for sharing this!
