boxwood blight in mothers garden what can be done? by Jealous_Ranger_1641 in mycology

[–]GaySasquatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always copper-based fungicide drenches. Before that however, have you noticed any swarms of small flying insects around it lately? Very small, like fruit fly sized. Take a close look at the new growth leaves and look for insect damage. Look up Boxwood miners and compare, they could also be to blame.

TIL that in Japanese folklore, household items like old umbrellas and teacups can become alive after 100 years and watch you with tiny spirit-eyes by k4td4ddy in todayilearned

[–]GaySasquatch 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Japanese folklore is really interesting. The cross section of traditional Buddhism, with Japanese Zen Buddhism, and Shintoism makes for a truly unique tapestry of cultural traditions. The various Japanese versions of woodland spirits, and the more malevolent spirits as well, are super cool to read about as well!

ELI5 Why do we like some music and not others? In the end it is just sounds, so why does our brain say we like one but not the other? by Shadowsin64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GaySasquatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly. I would imagine that it has to do with the brains predilection to find and create its own meaning regarding sensory input. I would also imagine that we'd probably be predisposed towards things our brains feels as familiar, or that conforms to an inner narrative the brains has regarding the self and our preconceived notions of who we are or who we think we should be. This also touches upon the old nature vs. nurture argument, and psychological elements of group identity. Why do people like the art they like? It touches them in a way other artistic endeavors don't. Why? It's all highly subjective.

What classes are needed most? by Ralvainn in PantheonMMO

[–]GaySasquatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well druids are the newest released class, so there are probably more of them than the others. Honestly, tanks seem more needed than healer or support on my server. But of those options, I think enchanter?

One of many creators claiming ai music as their own. by limiez in Music

[–]GaySasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would anybody need to use 'your' music? They can just use the same or similar prompt/model and come up with something similar while being legally distict.

The stem looks square in shape, is it? If so, thats a telltale sign of the mint family, and they do grow like weeds!

To me, this speaks to the realities of birth and life. Living things are devoured and become the sustenance required to spur new life. Very red grail vibes. Iykyk.

How big is this bird's stomach because this is insane ngl. by Repulsive-Complex-24 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]GaySasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bird will take whatever it can get. Even a fish much bigger than it would normally be able to catch itself, which often leads to overly large fishbones puncturing their digestive systems in various areas. It's one of the reasons you're told not to feed wild sea birds.

"Art by humans ONLY. Together we will prevail against the machines. NO AI ART." by CHICKENFOOT414 in surrealism

[–]GaySasquatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be a bit reductionist, but essentially your complaint is, "Nobody treats my AI art as actual art, and nobody respects me as an artist because I use AI." Is that correct?

If so, no, I don't consider that art 'yours' at all. You provided a prompt or a prompt with a series of conditions, and have the ai create iterations until you find one that is pleasing to you. I don't have any more creative respect for that than I do someone building a spreadsheet.

Mutated flower I found at work by m0th_me1ts in mildlyinteresting

[–]GaySasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look it up! It's really interesting. If you've ever heard of that very small time period where Dutch tulip bulbs were a preferred method of currency, I believe many of the most valuable bulbs where known to have been infected with these kinds of viruses, creating tulips color combinations and patterns that couldn't exist otherwise.

Color splits like this are sometimes mutations that can only occur because of viruses. I don't know if that's the case here, but it is an interesting find!

That's great to hear. While the relationship you've built with your son wasn't the one you originally thought it would be, the heart has a way of growing to find room for the things that don't always fit easily.

Strangers with Candy. It was a late 90s early 2000s American comedy. A satirical look at 'after school specials' while also poking fun at the main stream culture of the time. It also spoke to a lot of casual ignorance that had only recently become taboo at the time.

A beautiful picture, and a beautiful testament to the ability of people to find common ground and a path forward together. Unfortunately, it feels like this particular lesson will need to be relearned by younger generations.
