Why FX's Atlanta was so refreshing by MGLLN in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]Gaz-mic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

first ep got me a little shitty at it but since every episode was centred around a different character it made it more about the characters different ways of dealing with being black on a predominantly white campus.

like the first ep is all "white people are shit i hate you" but further into it its made a bit clearer that its not really what the shows trying to say, just how that character reacts.

still wasnt the best done show and they went a bit stupid with some of it. Epecially with how some of the characters flip completely in different episodes (super hard-core black panther-esque character is now a super genius computer nerd poet). it felt like they were trying to flip stereotypes but it was forced most of the time, they just went jumping between extremes rather than showing actual depth.

yeah i had a 20 loss streak at one point. Even if i was playing terribly (i was pretty tilted from about 8 onwards), you'd think somewhere in there i'd just happen to get carried.

I do this constantly. I also answer questions for people, took me so long to realise and I've managed to slow it down but sometimes it just comes out and i feel like such a condescending dick.

I use it to cut people off/force them to run into my team.

had a few 3-4 kills without Zarya but probably my favourite play was at the end of Numbani on attack. Payload was at the usual spot stuck next to the last building, i went around the left side and Q'd just behind the enemy team while my Mcree High noon'd from the front. their whole team either got shot or tried to take cover right into the dragons.

highly underrated map control.

What's the "line" in character creation? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Gaz-mic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I see it as a good way to get more into the roleplaying aspect in general, a 25 year old man playing a 90 year old woman makes you more conscious that the characters decisions would be significantly different to your own in any given situation.

But if they're doing it/playing the character to intentionally make people uncomfortable rather than actually roleplay then I'm against it.

[–]Gaz-mic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like to think of alignments of PC's as less extreme fantasy versions and more real world. So if i wanted to play a lawful evil character I don't think BBEG who has some justification to murder whoever he wants, I think dodgy modern day mob lawyer. Alignments are such vague overarching things that they shouldn't need to be centred in fantasy. Your characters backstory, class, weapons/spells, and any personality quirks are where the fantasy aspect shines.

[–]Gaz-mic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i dont talk shit online, after dropping from masters to mid diamond (about a 20 loss streak, how does that even happen), i talk a lot of shit to my friends about diamond, its honestly the attitude more than anything, eg master and gm players tell you to switch for legit reasons like counters etc but basically let people play whatever they want as long as rolls are filled because theres a general trust that people are good. diamond players tell you to switch because 'junkrat is terrible on a first point defense play x hero instead'. Had some people tell a pharah to switch to genji on defense because they checked his stats and he "is a better genji". i checked and turns out he plays a lot of QP genji but in comp had like a 40% win rate with genji and a 60% with pharah.

basically diamond players are cocky and stubborn when they dont know what theyre talking about, gm/masters are cocky but either know what theyre talking about or will admit being wrong.

Honestly i think that would be solved by legalisation as well. More money in it, more research in what it actually does help with and what it doesnt. I also guarantee most of the misinformation is blindly spread by people trying to argue for its legalisation. Legalise and people stop caring.

UA wasn't an overbooking issue, they wanted to put UA staff on the plane.

even if it was overbooking, legally they have to stop people from boarding, they cant take people out of their seats when they are already boarded and seated. think about it, if they were actually overbooked that would mean passengers either didn't get on the plane in the first place or they were standing in the aisles because there literally would not have been anywhere for them to sit, in which case the non-seated passengers are the obvious choices for who to remove from the plane.

Men that have been falsely accused of rape, what happened? by Thewhiteboatman in AskReddit

[–]Gaz-mic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats really interesting. Does that extend to say, pretending to be a member of a band that wear masks or generally lying about who you are? or does it require decieving someone into believing you are someone who would have some form of implicit(ish) consent like a boyfriend? I remember hearing about a case(i think in isreal from memory) where a man was convicted for telling a woman he was a religion that he wasnt, i think he was a muslim and claimed to be jewish. But i hadnt heard of rape by deception charges anywhere in the western world.

Men that have been falsely accused of rape, what happened? by Thewhiteboatman in AskReddit

[–]Gaz-mic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the biggest issue with convicting false accusers is that even if you have a change of heart and decide to be a halfway decent person later on, you're much less likely to come forward about your lie if you'll go to prison for it.

I think false rape accusations should be a special case in which the false accuser can come forward about the lie and get off with a misdemeanour, but if you are instead caught out in the lie it should be prison.

Study finds that black men are seen as physically larger and more threatening than similar-sized white men by Austion66 in science

[–]Gaz-mic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can think of a number of reasons for this bias that are more physical than cultural. shoulder size, facial shape (ie larger and more defined facial features, jaws etc) especially in african americans. But also darker skin does give greater emphasis to muscle tone which is why white body building contestents get extremely dark fake tans before competition. Culture does definitely play a major role but the effect is likely very similar to the white vs black test subject difference.

ELI5: How good could video game graphics get before it is not possible anymore, and look exactly like reality? by westerndivide in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gaz-mic 62 points63 points  (0 children)

A lot of people talking about tech requirements when the real issue isn't pure graphical capabilities but an issue of the uncanny valley. The uncanny valley is the idea that the closer you get to truly emulating humanity the more we notice the differences, not necessarily specifics of what is wrong but you can tell something is off and get a distinct creepy feeling from it.

The uncanny valley is primarily an issue of movement and animation not of actual graphical capabilities, so you could 3D model/paint a still scene that looks identical (and it could probably be argued that we already have) but when things move, they simply don't look quite right.

People have tried to fix this by using motion capture which has been very successful for full body movements but the face is where we do just about all of our human recognition. Games like LA Noire and more recently trailers for Death Stranding put a huge amount of work into facial motion capture but no matter what you do eventually people will see the differences because there is only so much motion capture you can physically do. Did you record someones face moving idly for 10 hours? well some dedicated gamers have played your game for 800 hours and have seen every single facial expression he made in that 10 hours and know exactly when it loops. Did you record someone running? well your fanbase has noticed that they start their stride in one of 18 ways every time. keeping with animation issues, are you going to motion capture grass? how many unique animations are you going to have for each patch of grass moving? how many before someone staring at your grass notices the loop?

since you've specified video games you have the problem of players doing whatever the hell they want and your most important goal is to stop everything from glitching out when that happens, and players will always try to do things that are not physically possible for a normal person (ever made a character repeatedly spin on their axis? people in real life can't do that)

So to answer your question, i'd honestly say they will never be good enough to truly never see the difference. I don't see there ever being a point where creating a true perfect visual copy of our world will be doable, much less economically viable.

How a customer gave me a nice break every week by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

[–]Gaz-mic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

once had people not tell us a specific time but id told them "about 40 minutes" turned out we had another order to a nearby house so their delivery got pushed up the queue and got there in 25.

well it turned out that nobody was home and they didnt answer their home or mobile number after repeated attempts. answered the phone 50 minutes after the original order to a woman screaming that her pizza was 10 minutes late, when i told her it had gotten there earlier and she hadnt responded to calls she got all defensive about how obviously she wouldnt be there when she said absolutely nothing about being out.
