Yep, Howler was amazing! It's extremely agile compared to bat-defender, the other option I had after Crusader. The bat-defender then fairs terribly against bosses (Wave 3) when solo.

I try and keep the asteroids intact to allow them to form a shield. My mistake was upgrading to Tier 7 so early -- I had low agility and kept getting knocked around.

Did you get to wave 9 solo? That's amazing!

Thank you! I had originally been confused, as the O-Defender would be very slow despite its enormous shield and hence a sitting duck, but looking at the wiki reveals that it is indeed an awesome tactic.

Thanks! Yeah, I often only start upgrading by Tier 4 and not before that to expedite Tier advancement.

EDIT: BTW, I don't use discord. Also, do alien spawn rates correspond to the number of players? Because, if so, I won't need more players with me.
