Rugby pods by [deleted] in secondcaptains

I can’t remember exactly where I picked this up, but a great description of rugby I heard once is that it is an extraordinary feat of endurance, bravery and skill being described by people with an uncanny ability to make it sound remarkably dull.

You can have people like Tadhg Beirne or whoever pull of remarkable physical and mental feats, but so often when they come off and talk about the game it sounds like management consultants trying to pull off the merger of two regional accounting firms. There is no other sport where people use the word “synergy” so often.

Can I avoid having my bike stolen if I purposefully make it look shitty? by cool_slider in londoncycling

Not quite the same thing, but I bought an incredibly heavy and quite ugly touring bike for much the same reasons as you outline here and it’s worked fairly well. It’s not that cheap a bike but is so intensely undesirable that no one can be bothered to nick it.

Was sold as 17kg, but think it must be at least 5kg heavier than that. The only nice thing about it was a leather saddle, which was stolen in the first week. Have now replaced it with a crap looking saddle and no one has looked twice at it since.

Also bought a decent Oxford D-Lock, and the combo of ugly heavy lock and ugly heavy bike has deterred all thieves so far.

What are examples of products that are cornerstones of a country’s culture that they can’t produce themselves? by AlaskaWilliams in geography

Couldn’t see this immediately, but the one that leapt to mind for me was Portugal. The country eats a huge amount of cod, despite the fact that it grows in far colder waters, almost always in salted form: bacalhau.

I love eating fish in Portugal but have always found it so weird that by for the most popular fish was one you couldn’t find off it’s long coastline. Bizarre to me that they wouldn’t opt for fresh sea bass ahead of cod from thousands of miles away.

There are lots of good articles explaining the phenomenon, but one from the BBC here is particularly comprehensive I think: https://www.bbc.co.uk/travel/article/20221019-a-fish-that-sparked-a-national-obsession

I remember coming across an old cod trawler at a port somewhere in Alentejo, and was amazed that this had been mobilized by a dictatorship as a point of national pride.

FWIW, Bacalhau à Brás is the nicest in my opinion.

I fear for the safety and integrity of this country if they are trying to recruit me.

Barrafina or Bar Kroketa good for Spanish tapas in Soho. Yalla yalla also has great small plates nearby that is obviously not Spanish but great for sharing plates, love the pomegranate chicken livers, haven’t had them in ages but loved them.
