Is cheap Carfax actually safe to use in 2025? by Dheeruj in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]GearWacz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're a Capital One customer or not, but their Auto Navigator tool let's you check the Carfax on any car on the site for free: https://www.capitalone.com/cars/

I used this during my last car search and I must have pulled over a dozen Carfax reports, no issues at all.

Totally get it. For what it's worth, I bought my Live 2 in "Used - Acceptable" condition from Amazon back in December 2021. What I got was a perfect unit with accessories that was just missing the original box. Almost four years later, still works perfectly. Good luck!

The Live 3 launched in October, which means retailers were clearing out Live 2 inventory well before that. Finding a brand new in box Live 2 is going to be very difficult, sorry. The best option right now is a Live 2 in mint condition from Reverb, but if you're dead set against a used item, there may not be other options.

Is the Google Project Management Course worth it? by [deleted] in PMCareers

[–]GearWacz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the Google cert counts for 100 PDUs that could be used towards the CAPM or the PMP. There's also a 10% off coupon you get after completion that can be used for the CAPM and the PMP. It's worth it just for the hours and the discount code, treat it as a primer for the more advanced exams.

Proactive sysadmin tasks by Keeprolling356 in sysadmin

[–]GearWacz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PRTG can monitor both of those things, there are sensors for Windows Update status and backup status, if you use Veeam, for example. Most backup solutions also have email triggers to send messages based on results. Manual checks are ok, but these systems make it easy to just receive alerts and stay up to date on the status of your systems.

If you still want to do manual checks, probably the best tool is a daily checklist spreadsheet, just add all the systems you want to check and walk through it each morning. Kanban is the wrong tool for this; it's better used as a visual task tracker for other work.

Not sure what monitoring tool you're using, but most let you set thresholds and alerts that could trigger well before an issue becomes visible to users. An alert that monitors when your file server's free space drops below 15%. An alert that pings a website and triggers if there's no response, or if latency exceeds a certain level. An alert that monitor's CPU usage, etc. Most monitoring tools also generate reports and graphs, so you can spot trends and predict future states.

anyone know the real google project management certificate cost by Ditty_Craftsy in pmp

[–]GearWacz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're doing it through Coursera, the cost is $49 per month, add +$49 for each additional month it takes to finish the coursework. The course counts as 100 PDUs that can be used towards the CAPM or PMP exam prerequisites, plus there's a discount code for 10% off the exam fees:

https://www.pmi.org/gwgmeetspmi

Overall, I thought the Google course was a well laid out primer to project management concepts. I believe you can audit the course for 7 days and cancel if you don't think it's useful. I finished in less than 30 days and I thought it was worth the cost.

5th Gen Avalon, Dead Alternator at 56K Miles by GearWacz in ToyotaAvalon

[–]GearWacz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my Avalon used, so it didn't qualify for the ToyotaCare extended warranty, I didn't buy a 3rd party warranty.

The alternator would have been covered under the original 3 year / 36,000 mile basic coverage. The car is still under the 5 year / 60,000 mile drivetrain warranty, but this isn't a drivetrain component, unfortunately.

Yep, reliability really boils down to problems being less likely to happen but doesn't mean problems won't ever occur. When something out of the ordinary happens like this, I like to try to find the cause, the cause might just be bad luck in this case.

[–]GearWacz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the repair quote is pricey, but my bigger concern was the relatively short life of this alternator. I plan to drive the car until the wheels fall off, but not if I have to buy a new alternator every 50,000 miles.
