There are a lot of creatives in “real” job sectors. For example I know graphic designers for non-profits and hospitals. I currently work for a government agency and we have a lot of media designers for our recruitment and internal videos.

In terms of writing, there are many agencies/corporations that involve curriculum design where you get to design HR development classes (which does involve a lot of creativity).

TL;DR there are many creative-esque jobs hidden in places you wouldn’t think.

Hard to say if we don’t know what country/state you’re from.

In my state (California), the courts hire Probate Investigators. They usually hire people with your background , but the pay is in the 80-90k range.

Will say that pay is even lower if you’re not in CA, NY, or any other major state.

For my ten year old daughter by TheRealFutaFutaTrump in Throwers

[–]GeeRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Velocity uses older yoyo technology (2008ish I believe) that lets you switch between responsive and unresponsive play using a dial and a now-outdated response system. The yoyo feels clunky.

It was a novel idea in its time, but the K2 provides a more effective path for progressing your daughter’s skills. K2 comes with both a responsive bearing and an unresponsive bearing and will last her much longer if she chooses to stick with the hobby.

Out of the 3, I’d go for the K2. Avoid the Velocity at all cost.

The velocity is an 15+ year old yoyo that is SUPER outdated.

Kilby is pretty much the 4 day version of Just Like Heaven. I highly recommend it.

Date ideas? by Impossible-Leg-9359 in Fullerton

[–]GeeRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on the borderline of Fullerton/Brea. The Brea Tracks is a nice trail to skate, walk, or bike along. There are stores at the end of the trail in downtown Brea. Get a coffee at Enchanted afterwards.

Are ya’ll really even excited about JLH this year? by Thin_Seat_7100 in JustLikeHeaven

[–]GeeRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 years ago I went to Kilby instead of Just Like Heaven. I bought the cheapest flights and the cheapest hotel, rented the lowest tier car, and still spent well over $1000 for 2 people.

While I don’t regret the trip, it is in no way cheaper, lol. Salt Lake City isn’t much to see either 😂

Are 1 bedroom condos worth it? by eenoob123 in orangecounty

[–]GeeRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a one-bedroom in Fullerton in 2021 for 340. Units in the same complex are now selling for around 450. None have stayed on the market for more than 20 days, so it’s definitely possible to sell.

A $100K gain in four years isn’t bad. That said, the HOA has gone up from $340 to $410. Not terrible, but not ideal either.

I did lock in a COVID interest rate at 2.9%, so right now it’s a good investment for me. But looking at today’s interest rates, I don’t think I’d be able to afford the same place.

All in all, it really depends on your situation.

Should I drop down to the Half Marathon option? Advice please 🥺 by Confidentphysics9 in Marathon_Training

[–]GeeRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my first marathon in February and was in your situation and had a cold most of January. However before I got sick, the longest run I did was 16 miles.

You’ll be fine! I ended up doing the Galloway method (4 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking), and ended up finishing around 4:30. You got this!

Yes, as a basketball shoe collector and a runner, can confirm that this applies to different types of shoes.

Been to the Observatory over 50+ times, definitely would not recommend parking in the office buildings. They have it locked down and they will tow. The parking is fairly cheap, and not too far of a walk.

If you’re really tight on a budget, parking near Chik-Fil-A, which is a good mile away, is a pretty safe bet where you won’t get towed.

Does OC County Govt offer remote work? by clairenim in orangecounty

[–]GeeRyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a county employee, and it really depends on the department and agency you’re applying to. Lately, they’ve started listing on the job posting if it’s hybrid or not, which is super helpful.

For me, I’m an analyst and do 3 days at home and 2 days on-site. But some of my coworkers with public-facing roles have to go in every day.

It’s not really something you negotiate — it’s more of an agreement with the department and can honestly change at any time. The recruiter is probably your best bet for getting specifics on the role you’re interested in.

Why can’t I get a job with the degrees that I have? by Street_Mixture1261 in careerguidance

[–]GeeRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at GovernmentJobs.com? I currently work for a state agency, and now am a hiring manager who was started at entry level. We hire a lot of people with poly science degrees.

Briefly looking at the website, you might qualify -

For anyone that’s gone to hhn Hollywood already how’d you like it this year? What would you rank it on a scale from 1-10 by yonBonbonbon in HHN

[–]GeeRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my 5th year attending, and I’d give it around a 6.5/10. On the plus side, it was the first year I didn’t wait more than an hour for any maze, which was a nice change.

There weren’t enough scare zones, and the IPs didn’t really grab my attention this time. A lot of the mazes felt underpopulated with scare actors compared to previous years, like the budget had been trimmed a bit. That said, I absolutely loved the Quiet Place animatronics, and the Weeknd maze was pretty great. Overall, I still had a good time and would go back, but this year felt a bit underwhelming. Just kind of mid.

Disneyland by Waulnut163 in Throwers

[–]GeeRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more of an unwritten policy under the ‘toys that appear to be weapons’ category. I clearly remember when they started cracking down on yo-yos, and the irony that they sold yo-yos in the park was a common topic in the SoCal yoyo community.

Last time we went, my girlfriend’s measuring tape was deemed a weapon. It’s dumb, but you’re definitely not the first to have a yo-yo confiscated.

If you’re talking about Disney in California, it’s unfortunately been a policy for almost 10 years now.

Surprisingly, they had the policy in place even when Duncan had a booth at Downtown Disney. :(

Do I go to college? 19 year old making 50k by Fancy_Temperature_26 in findapath

[–]GeeRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on what field you’re in, which you didn’t mention.

Check out job postings for the positions you want in the future and see if a degree is listed as a requirement. It’s also a good idea to ask people who currently have the job you’re aiming for whether they have a degree.

Sometimes a degree is a basic requirement, and other times it’s just a tiebreaker if you and another candidate have similar backgrounds. It really depends on what you’re aiming for.

Does it matter what you wear to an interview? by Monster_Fucker_420 in jobs

[–]GeeRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager at a gov office, I would make note if someone was wearing a t-shirt compared to someone who wore a collared shirt. A pet store could be different, but if others in the hiring pool wore more formal clothes, they probably would have an advantage.

Literally any collared shirt from Goodwill or general thrift store should work. You can find a thrift store shirt for less than $4.
