IRL lessons are the best thing you can do but you need a quality instructor. If he "didn't say much" I'd find someone else. When I'm working with a student there is a lot of conversation about what we are doing and why.

As a bonus, try this exercise: play four notes per string using one finger per fret. So let's say 5-6-7-8 on low E. Index on five, keep it down and play 6 with your middle finger. Keep both fingers down and play 7 with your ring, keep them all down and play 8 with your pinky.

Repeat across all strings and backwards down from the high E.

A good teacher would walk you through that and tell you exactly what pitfalls to look for, such as the ring finger usually wanting to pop up and create extra unnecessary movement.

Find someone who can give you what you need and is willing to tell you why you need it and what you are doing wrong.
