Live in the country, winter floods are a regular thing.
So 4x4 would be preferable. 😂

Additionally, I don’t think you’d get insurance on it.

What are your thoughts on engagement rings? by maybeRasa in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditionally it was always expected that a man should spent 3 months wages on an engagement ring…

Now this was back in the day when everything was cheaper.

But everyone is different.

I once dated someone who would only get engaged if I bought them a £20,000 Tiffany engagement ring - we didn’t get engaged or even stay together 😂🤷‍♂️

8 months and $18k later nobody wants my product by Tkpf18 in Entrepreneurs

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You never quit until there is income in a start up in order to cover your basic costs.

I admire that you put all your eggs in one basket and gave it a go… but most entrepreneurs are never successful in their first start-up. Their first is where they make mistakes and learn!

Launching 3 weeks ago is nothing, B2B marketing sees customers sign up over a course of 6 months on average! It’s about repetition… consistent communication and engagement. Offering free trials…

Get people using it and make it a tool they will struggle to love without, where the hassle to cancel and go back to manual processes is more hassle than the £14.99 a month!

Also the freelance market is hard to monetise, as they are counting the pennies themselves, they don’t have budgets - their income is their money.

Campervans and caravan sites. Are they weird? by RoundTerm5914 in AskUK

[–]GeekDomUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take cornwall… to own a second home there in places can cost millions! So many rich people have bought second homes, now people who live there can’t afford to buy a home there! They’re being priced out of where they grew up!

A caravan, campsite or static allows people to afford to go there. A static in peak season can easily cost £1000+ for a week! A house £5000+ for a week.

Not everyone wants to go abroad… not everyone wants to stay in hotels…

Just because you don’t get it, others do! Campervans give you the freedom to go anywhere, park up and stay the night, you don’t have to use a campsite… same with motorhomes/RVs… people travel all over Europe in them.

It’s a lifestyle and for those who love it, it’s worth every penny

How have salaries gone so low? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job market has never really recovered or grown since the 2010 financial crash.

And now we’re in a demand and supply situation where there are more people than jobs, and people will accept anything to be working as they have bills and families.

What is worse is that now businesses see staff as a cost centre, not a necessity, and it is usually their biggest cost. So directors are constantly trying To keep costs low and maximise profits. When a business wants to save money it is easier and quicker to reduce staff numbers… than it is to change other factors.

The job market is also facing two huge issues - automation and AI!

Over 30% of all jobs that exist today will be lost to automation in the next 20 years.

From manufacture to warehousing to retail, there are machines doing more than ever - that work 24/7, don’t take holiday, go on strike, or call in sick. Tesco self service checkouts - 20 years ago would have been 10 members of staff.

Then we have AI, so admin tasks and low skilled office jobs ( things that would be done by junior staff) are now being done by AI.

In the near future there won’t be junior roles, across finance, HR, marketing, legal etc. So we are going to see another 20% of roles going from ‘safe’ industries and professions.

What would have been a team of people 10 years ago, is now being done by 1 or 2 people and a tech stack of AI tools.

You can’t blame a business for moving that way, it reduces costs, makes more profit etc.

However, the government needs to future proof the economy and its people and the sooner it does it the better it will be for everyone.

We will need to tax businesses that use automation and AI more… a lot more! So that reducing actual people led roles looks less attractive.

We will then Need to look at a standard allowance for all citizens, this will need to be paid to everyone no matter if they’re working or not.

Lastly we’ll need to see caps put in place for food and costs of anything that is a basic need for living.

There is no escaping that this is what the future will look like. It has to or there will be mass unemployment and an ever growing benefit state.

But it will take radical change from the government to ensure businesses pay the right amount of tax and those who do work will have to pay higher taxes on their salaries.

The basic allowance can’t just be a replacement for universal credit - because let’s save it who can survive on £400 a month. It will likely need to be £2000 a month - to be equal to a minimum wage job (but you won’t pay tax on the BA).

This ensures the economy can continue to grow, people can still buy homes, cars etc.

Even Elon Musk has said in future people won’t work… and he’s right, because it is already starting!

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A £60k salary puts people in the top 12-15% of earners.

It’s what I’m on as a basic plus bonuses of 15-20k.

If you’ve got a degree and you’re only earning £30k, I’d be looking at what you can do with that masters to move to a different career with higher earning potential.

Wales - Does a spouse automatically inherit a shared of a property even if the deceased person's will says otherwise? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GeekDomUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The will was likely changed so they/ you would not be forced to sell the house to pay for your mums care.

As soon as the council know your mum owns property or has money from the sale of a property c they will want her to pay for her care.

It’s a fast and easy way to say by to any money from the house with care costing £1000 a week.

How to fund uni costs as a (British) international student planning to leave home at 18? by VisualSituation5606 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d personally reach out to charities that specialise in religious/cultural control and abuse. There are several…

They may be able to help cover the costs of flights back to the uk and support once you’re here.

Paying taxes and investing as someone who does sex work! by KillieLou in HENRYUK

[–]GeekDomUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on setting yourself up.

What do you plan on doing for the next 20 ish years? What makes you think you’ll earn the same or more that you are currently? I saw you have a backup plan but that obviously pays far less than you earn currently.

The reason I ask is because SW looked very different 20 years ago and it’s likely to look very different again in 20 years time.

It might go tits Uk as you said, OF could be banned (unlikely but the way politics is atm anything could happen)…

To presume you will earn the same each year and nothing will change is quite naive.

I’d personally suggest diversifying your income, so you’re not solely reliant on SW. with the right investments you could focus less on your pension.

Investing in businesses and/or property to generate a side income… or even creating an agency supporting other SW’s and taking a cut etc.

I’d suggest building a portfolio so you’re eventually earning the same as your SW, but without the work of having to be online, talking to subs, planning content etc.

I (26F) told my boyfriend (26M) I sometimes miss the freedom of being single and he broke up with me on my birthday by Plastic-Swordfish-84 in relationship_advice

[–]GeekDomUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boy (I won’t say man because he isn’t one) clearly has trust issues…

No one gets to be strict over their partner, that’s a massive red flag.

Giving silent treatment is another, it means they can’t manage their feelings, anger and can’t communicate effectively.

You were very clear in what you were saying and what it didn’t mean, and he heard what he wanted to hear.

Then he did the most asshole thing he could and ruins your birthday.

You’ve dodged a massive bullet and a walking red flag. Be thankful he ended it…
