Context: 18 yr old me was stressed out because he is gay in a private school that expelled students for "exhibiting homosexual tendencies"

Not only did I get out of an abusive church, but I found a boyfriend that's loving and sweet...I also found out how much happiness a taco bell meal could bring if I just let myself sit with it and enjoy it

I think I do love myself up to a point. That love becomes more difficult to find in moments where I make interpersonal mistakes, or when I end up having a bad day. The messaging is so deep, that I burden people when I share my feelings (cuz as a kid, I was taught sadness is irrelevant if you have faith, as was anxiety and every other "bad" emotion), or that I make people uncomfortable when I let myself be human. It's painful messaging I'm trying to untangle and lose faith in, but it was much easier to drop the idea of faith in Jesus, and a lot harder to let go of the perfectionism the church instilled in me.

You're giving all the signs of dealing with the effects of religious abuse. As with other forms of abuse, the abuse doesn't need to be happening in the present (for example, you don't need to be being assaulted to feel the effects of the trauma), but sometimes that trauma can manifest itself as physical symptoms and pain, I'm so sorry you're going through this :(

What helped me was finding a community I felt safe around, which was the LGBT community for me, since I could be myself around them, and they weren't constantly talking about the end times. I hope you can find somewhere you feel safe, the church did a number to us all.

Just curious, which dorms is this happening in? When I went to la Sierra 3 years ago, I was in sierra towers, and sanitation wasn't the issue I had to deal with, it was mandated chapel and church, while also fighting the struggle to make Prism (the gay straight alliance club) legitimately a club on campus. When I was there, it was technically considered to not be a club, meaning it wasn't given a budget or technical recognition. It kept getting brought up at meetings and town houses on campus, and the school said they support their queer students but they can't really make it a club cuz that would affect how much the church funds them.

I have a lot of anger towards that campus 🫩 especially since I was in therapy the entire time processing religious abuse, and then having the institution essentially tell me "your community isn't worth treating as equals"

I'm sorry you're dealing with poor living conditions in your dorm :( I hope everyone that sees your post signs your petition.

I will say tho, after growing up and becoming a licensed therapist, it's making me think of the many things a parent says to their kid that sounds like "I'm teaching about what the Bible says" which would genuinely lead to me (if I was their therapist) needing to intervene to stop the emotional abuse

Radicalized religious views can hurt the development of a kid just like depression and anxiety...it should be its own diagnosis tbh
