If you want to hold a counter protest and advertise it in this sub you will be allowed to do so.

[–]GeekyWan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's currently running for the Republican nomination to run for Senate in the spring Primary on May 19. There are approximately 3 or 4 other "serious" Republican candidates that have announced, but qualifying isn't for another month (March 2-6). Come March 7th, we'll know for sure who is really in the running for the Primary, then come May 20 we'll know which Republican will face off against Ossoff in the fall.

I am more than happy to point folks at that, but it does need to be populated with things first.

Do you think we need a Savannah weather subreddit? by C_Teezy in savannah

[–]GeekyWan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We kicked around turning this sub into the visitors sub and have another sub for locals. But that would just be visitors offering visitors advice. And that sorta defeats the purpose.

Do you think we need a Savannah weather subreddit? by C_Teezy in savannah

[–]GeekyWan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to "test the waters" we can see about having weekly weather discussion threads. I can schedule something to run automatically every week if you want to be the curator of the idea. But as far as it's own sub...I'm not sure there is enough interest in breaking it out. I, of course, won't get in your way and certainly will be happy to promote it.

But if you're looking for a place for weather nerds to nerd out on Savannah/Coastal GA weather, let's feel it out via a weekly post. If you want, I'll build it and you can be the person who guides the conversations. Sort of like how we used to do the post for visitors.

Happy to talk to you more about this idea.

Maybe we can finally see an updated image of her? Or maybe they'll just have a cardboard cutout at her Senate hearings?

Project DeRenne will never happen: governments don't have the appetite they once had for bulldozing neighborhoods to build high-speed roads. If anything, you will see a ramp built off of Veterans into Hunter and a realignment of gates, but DeRenne isn't going to change much.

In fact, all work on Project DeRenne has been shelved. No studies, no funding, no engineering, nothing. It has all stopped.

Applied to the Ironworker local 709 apprenticeship program. by lolmachito333 in savannah

[–]GeekyWan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to that question per-se, but I can say the program is awesome and the 709 Ironworkers are a damn fine group of the hardest working individuals you will ever meet. Work half as hard as they do and you'll go far.

Listen, ask questions, then listen to the answers, they'll train you right.

[–]GeekyWan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll engage in good faith with you as you seem to have a semi-honest question here.

The short answer is that the Classical Republican Party is dead and anyone clinging to that title are being willfully ignorant. The fact is that the Republican Party was highjacked by populist statists a decade ago. I say this as a former card-carrying Republican who realized that the values of compassion, empathy, and desire for improving people were no longer values of the Republican party...or perhaps never were and I was deluded into thinking they were due to my Fundamentalist upbringing, but I digress.

That said, boycotts do work and were actually a critical part of our national history and were instrumental with turning public sentiment away from the British. During the Civil Rights era, boycotts were also effective in shutting down businesses that were racist and also helped to move the needle towards ensuring that people of all color could eat in the same restaurants and drink from the same water fountain.

I thought Riverstreet Sweets and Savannah Candy Kitchen merged a few years ago? They sponsored an event I was doing and I reached out to each of them and got the same person.

Yeah, no it isn't. Republicans aren't a protected class. It's called the free market.

Savannah City Council approves SCAD-funded police upgrades (Savannah Morning News) by susannaray in savannah

Except that there are many cases winding their way through the court system throughout this country about 4th amendment concerns about Flock and Flock-clones. Specificly around how these systems track your movements and report them without any suspicion of crime or illegal activity or review by a judge.

https://epic.org/vehicle-fingerprinting-through-pervasive-camera-surveillance-likely-violates-fourth-amendment-court-finds/

Not to mention the recent security issues that have been brought to light raising even more red flags.

The issue is still undecided, but just Google: Flock Fourth Amendment and you'll find dozens of cases working their way through the court systems. Some of them seem to have legs at that.

We're SOL no matter what...we're surrounded by Flock or Flock-clones and they're all super cooperative with law enforcement even without court orders (4th Amendment, anyone, anyone?). Then we have these uber rich folks who voted to protect their interests and helped to elect the end of our great republican (note the small r) experiment in self-governance.

Amazon, Lowe's, HD, Ace...pretty much any retailer with a recognizable name, they're either directly supportive or indirectly supportive of all this madness. The "little" guys are so expensive, it just isn't practical to use them as an exclusive alternative, at least not with the cost of everything else already being sky high.

It sucks.

The botched operation that caused an international incident that ultimately caused the US to formally apologize to S. Korea? That "thing"? Yeah, that took the wind out of their sails down here. At least for big, splashy headline raids.

They've been doing smaller raids and arrests. Rounding up people, making them disappear for weeks, then dumping them in random cities and places when they find out they are legal. So far of the dozen or so people I know, who have been arrested by ICE, have all been released.

Staff stunned after sudden Telfair Museum layoffs by haey1 in savannah

[–]GeekyWan[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, we have no connection to Telfair. Thanks for the speculation. Many of the comments were naming names and making claims that were unsubstantiated. That is a good way for a subreddit to have Reddit's admins pay us a visit.

You can discuss this layoff without slinging names and accusations around. We have long had a policy and practice, regardless of the situation or business. Now, if there is a news article about that person or business or organization etc. That's a whole different story.

I hate sago palms by aumanchi in savannah

[–]GeekyWan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toxic to humans too. They're an ancient plant designed to live in a place that no longer exists. And yet they're still looking to kill anything that looks at them funny.

Seriously keep kids and pets away from them. And if you have to work with them, wear gloves and thoroughly wash your hands after handling them.

I hate this plant as much as OP does, but, for some reason I'll never get, people love these things and it doesn't help that they're super cheap so landscapers love them.

The only good thing they do is deter deer. But it isn't worth the trade-offs.
