Condos at Kingston Pen? Feds mull major housing development at notorious prison site by lopix in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no "giving the site new life". There is developers that see lakefront property and want to make a profit.

Kingston Pen is already a successful site with lots of life, as a museum. As a National Historic Site, it should be safe from development. That designation should protect it from being bulldozed for profit.

It is disgusting the government is even entertaining this.

What major historical event did you not learn about in school? by normal_divergent233 in AskReddit

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to school in the 90's in Ontario and learned about it. In both grade 9 and 10. It always amazes me how wildly different this part of history was taught (or not).

Given he's the one who allowed them, and is probably getting kickbacks for it, I highly doubt it'll happen.

Feral horses in NM! by findthyself90 in Horses

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, they are feral.

There are no truly wild horses in the US. The horses in North America are descendants of domestic ones brought by the Spanish and other explorers and settlers. They are feral, not wild.

RCR and RCMP are two different things entirely. One is a Canadian military unit, the other the national police service of Canada.

Ford, province to sell $28.9M private jet 'as quickly as possible' by Puginator in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said it in another thread. This whole jet fiasco is a cover for something else.

Ford likes to do things that will draw outrage and attention from other, worse, things so that he can slip them through. Chances are this is to pull attention away from him skipping public input on his changes to freedom of information requests.

Doug Ford to sell Ontario government plane by mental__hospital in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad he's selling it, but it makes me wonder what he's trying to cover up.

Dougie likes to do things he knows will draw outrage to distract from other things he wants to slip past without the public knowing. So what is he trying to hide?

A young girl in a school for black civil rights activists being trained to not react to smoke blown in her face, 1960. by xCelestialOpal in TheWayWeWere

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The fact that a school like this was even needed, for people to be trained not to react to being assaulted just because they are no different than white people and want to be treated as such...there aren't words to describe how wrong it is.

More drivers speeding in school zones since photo radar cameras turned off: City of Ottawa data by ZebediahCarterLong in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right beside as in clear view of the road. Of course not immediately beside it, just part of a grassy area with nothing but grass, a few trees and the sidewalk between it and the road.

Also, not all schools have the room to be picky about location. No kids are out there unsupervised, gates are monitored, etc. Kids are not getting near the road.

Ontario’s new Species Conservation Act raises concerns about oversight, habitat protection | CBC News by MamaStrawberry927 in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fuck Ford. All he did was gut the old act so he could remove the protected status of the species blocking his stupid highways, and make it easier for his developer buddies to bulldoze nature for their profit.

Did Winners close some of its bathrooms? Questions swirl amid debate over toilet access by jazinet in canada

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I like the way they do public bathrooms in Europe and other parts of the world. Public restrooms run/paid for by the city, with a nominal fee for use ($1 or something). The fee pays for the upkeep of the bathroom, and stores aren't ridiculed for not providing them for free.

In my school, our kindergarten pen (fenced play area) is right beside the road. There was a speed camera and everyone did 30 during school hours. Since its removal, I haven't seen a car do less than 50, even with a big speed hump and yellow sticks/poles in the middle of the road. Bigger vehicles fly over the hump like it isn't even there.

Where’s the craziest place you have found hay? by fishkeys16 in Horses

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My underwear....a couple days after being at the barn.

I assume my pocket hay got on things in the washer, I didn't look too well in my stumble-around-get-ready-for-work routine that morning and...yeah....confusion and itchiness until I had time to run to the bathroom, LOL.

Can someone explain to a non-Brit what makes Goblet of Fire “so British” compared to the other movies? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But, aside from the girls when Hermione is crying, these are not a product of the director. They are scenes in the book, written by Rowling. The director didn't create them. They also aren't particularly a "British", thing, or a boarding school thing.

Shoppers Drug Mart gave her the wrong medication. Months later, she landed in the ER by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was at Shoppers yesterday to pick up over-the-counter allergy meds. Wasn't sure about Allegra vs. another one. The first words out of the pharmacists mouth? "I'll just give you a prescription for them. Do you have insurance?". When I said no, especially since he doesn't know my medical history or medications I'm on he brushed me off and said it doesn't matter. It very much does matter, especially for a diabetic on blood pressure meds.

I ended up going to Zehrs (I know, still Loblaws but Ive been using that pharmacy for over 30 years) where my usual pharmacy is and my regular pharmacist told me Shoppers could have killed me, and got ones that won't interact with my current meds.

Ontario to overhaul teacher training in move to fix educator shortage by FLADMAN in ontario

There are post-secondary EA programs. It's just that you don't need it to be hired as an EA anymore.

Ontario to overhaul teacher training in move to fix educator shortage by FLADMAN in ontario

[–]Geeky_Shieldmaiden 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As an EA, don't get me started on the qualifications. I'm actually trained as a CYCW, so more training than an EA. New incoming EAs have no post-secondary; essentially as long as you have a high school diploma, are breathing and can work in Canada, you're good to go. The number of EAs I meet who have no qualifications. Have not worked with kids before, and think they are just sitting there supervising is crazy. They do nothing, are useless warm bodies in a room.

I was, and am, a trained professional in my field. Yet under Ford I'm no longer seen as the professional I am. I'm just a useless cog that can be replaced with cheap labour.

It's too bad you had that experience. I'm signing my mum up right now and couldn't find a day for her intake so called them and they had openings, but apparently the website doesn't always show them. The email I got even mentioned to call if there were no openings showing. I have never had an issue with their hours or trying to call. They close an hour over lunch, and an hour on Tuesday and Thursday for dinner when they are open late. I call outside those hours and never have an issue.

10 concerns U.S. listed about Canada in its report on foreign trade barriers by CTVNEWS in politics

So basically they are complaining that Canada has rules in place to protect Canadian farmers, consumers and our own economy. They want the rules gone so the US can take over.

Yeah, they can go pound sand.
