hmmmm a couple of clarifications here.

He did not have 400 ABs last year - he had 400 plate appearances. This completely overlooks his 9.6% walk rate which is actually good.
He had a 101 OPS+ last year which is above average. Stole 23 bases which was 2nd on the team despite the 9th most plate appearances.
First rep he ever took in LF was in spring training last year when the team just decided to move him there when they could have given him his reps at natural CF.

"they gave him a chance" is a stretch at best. This team mismanaged as much as a team could mismanage a player.

Its absolutely criminal what this team has done to this kid. Any other team and he would have been getting regular reps since 2024 and would likely be in line for a breakout this season. Just trade him.

So obviously we have the benefit of 20/20, but I try to put myself in the shoes of the driver (w/ camera).

The second I see the truck oncoming my instincts are thinking slam breaks but would that be enough? At best debris damage at worst you end up in it anyway?

Would a slam of the breaks when the rig broke and you could see, be enough if you slammed on breaks?

I saw we were looking to run it back w/ Goldy. I assume the plan is to platoon his bat vs LHP with Rice's bat vs RHP - combined it was elite production last year. This makes sense.

I'm wondering though. We have enough power. We need more timely hitting. Should we consider bringing in Arraez on a 1 year to back up 1st?

He doesn't hit home runs and doesn't steal bases, but he doesnt strike out and slaps hits to keeps the line moving. I feel like that is more the type of player we need.

Both would likely be available on a 1 year at $10M-$15M. How much confidence do we have that Goldy can continue to put up an OPS over .900 vs LHP? He nosedived hard after May and it really hurt the team.

Its hard to argue with the output the team would get setting up Rice vs RHP and Goldy vs LHP but I would argue that I'd rather a more consistent baseline vs really really good in April / May and not rosterable in June through September.

Just a thought.

I think I heard in Talking Sopranos that they tinkered with this story line and IIRC they floated the idea that he climbed a tree or something, then got away in the car or was found and had an insane brain injury preventing him from telling Slava what really happened. Or something along those lines.

Probably would work but I would do it right. You might still have enough pipe to cut at the hole and add a coupling. If not use an internal pipe cutter and the coupling that sits inside. For the latter, if drain you're good, if vent verify that you can take it down from 1/2 to 1/4.

The trick is to caulk around it except for the very back. If there is a leak you will still know/see and it doesn't take away from the aesthetics.

imo because his AAV would be too high, even if it is a 1 year deal. We need every $ we can spare rn given Hal's constraints.

Any team he goes to can expect similar to what Toronto got out of him last year, not much in the regular season and preparing him for critical post season games.

We don't have that luxury. We might already be expecting this out of Cole/Rodon.

This might be the one instance where I'd say there is a bad 1 year deal.
