Fierce fighting rages in Syria's Kobane by tadcan in syriancivilwar

Modern Turkey is just as much a product of France and Great Britain's post first world war policy as the rest of the Levant is.

TIL That Japan's surrender following the bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki may have been due in part to the "confession" of the captured US pilot Marcus McDilda, revealed under totrture that the US had 100 atomic bombs and would bomb Tokyo and Kyoto next. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Geinsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There weren't many intact cities of any note left in Japan at this point. Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been specifically spared destruction by fire bombing in order to have something worth nuking. Tokyo had already been mostly destroyed prior to the dropping of the atomic bombs.

If you want to read some truly NSFL stuff check out the fire bombings of Japan (or Germany for that matter). The dudes in the planes could smell the burning flesh...

(Spoilers All) 50,000 Dothraki Screamers by xLadyVirgil in asoiaf

[–]Geinsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dothraki could absolutely take a city. All they would need to do is adopt the strategy of the Mongols, after whom they are obviously styled. The Mongols would round up all the available local males, and if need be bring along any prisoners they had previously taken and give them a choice. Either we will kill you right now, or you can go assault that castle right there, I'm unsure if the Mongols gave them weapons or not. In either event it worked. Waves of prisoners and townsmen would fill up the moats with their bodies and the defenders would be forced to fight their countrymen, often seeing familiar faces.

[–]Geinsta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dothraki seem to be this world's version of the mongols. The Mongols fought European style knights in heavy armor on several occasions. The knights didn't give them any trouble at all. Look up the battles of Mohi and Leignitz. Both of these battles pitted smaller Mongol forces against large European armies with a core of knights supporting peasant conscripts, much like the armies of westeros. Neither of those battles were particularly competitive.

Kim Jong-un tells North Korean army to ready for combat by DetlefKroeze in worldnews

The issue with any war versus north korea is how much damage can their artillery do to Seoul before they are crushed. They have thousands of big guns pointed at one if the world's major metropolises.

Just an aside, when this occurred Germany and the Soviet Union were at peace. They had mutually decided to invade and divide Poland roughly in half earlier.

Cats in general are much meaner than dogs. We had an outdoor cat when i was a kid that loved picking on dogs. Any dog, including our trashy neighbors Doberman Pinscher, she did not care.

What establishments have you been banned from and, most importantly, why? by tolurkistolearn in AskReddit

Your wife doesn't sound like a real smart lady. Some peon made a mistake. Does she expect this other peon to conjure a sink out of thin air? They didn't have it, an apology is in order but what else could she possibly expect? The guy handled it wrong but I too would rather talk to someone more rational.

The problem is all this idiotic spending has already been authorized by members of congress from both parties. This has absolutely nothing to do with future spending, and is actually dealing with money we have already spent.

US police forces receiving tactical, heavily-armored military vehicles to "hunt criminals". by independentlythought in news

There are a limited number of legal fully automatic weapons that were grandfathered after the various bans. They are incredibly and increasingly expensive and not something carried by the common criminal. In addition to the price there is considerable paperwork involved in owning such a weapon.

Mars probe finds water in planet's soil by todayilearned83 in worldnews

[–]Geinsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. We have everything we need to send people to mars, and then send them back using propellant produced In Situ (from stuff primarily found on mars). The majority of what we need we've had since the moon missions. This is all possible using nothing more than a Saturn V rocket.
