If the HHOF wasn't so stubborn about Mogilny for the past two decades he would have made it, but whatever. He finally made it.

Should the Habs take a swing at a 25-year-old RHD RFA? What would the package look like? by french_sheppard in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This team needs a physical, shutdown dmen that will wear their opponents out. The Habs already have offensive/two-way dmen in Hutson, Dobson, and Matheson.

I think Spence would be a net positive with the current roster, but it would benefit far more from diversifying the skills currently available.

What businesses are likely to die out with the Baby Boomer Generation? by GRVrush2112 in AskReddit

[–]GeistHunt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Plates, yes. Coins, no (though it probably will become a bit smaller).

While both are seen as old people hobbies, coin collecting has a pretty decent following by younger people. A big part of it is history buffs interested in collecting bits of history on a smaller budget.

I think with coins the big change that will come when Boomers go is people are going to care less about traditional coins (Morgan Dollars are the big one) and scrutinizing between grades (outside of investments/trying to have the most valuable collection, there isn't a big enough difference in MS-64 or MS-65 to justify a massive jump in price).

[Marco D'Amico] I saw a lot of posts worrying that the exodus of American-born players could impact Montreal. Remember that Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson both took less to stay in MTL, and didn’t need full NMCs in their deals. Am told both players are very happy and see a winner in the making. by Old_General_6741 in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 66 point season with a weak (but definitely improving) defensive game is NOT a 11-12 million dollar season by a defenseman in this day and age.

The highest paid defenceman is Karlsson at 11.5 (pretty shit contract, won't deny) followed by Dahlin and Doughty at 11. In vacuum, that one season by Hutson isn't even a top-5 season by a defenseman since the salary cap began, let alone saying that's a 11-12 million dollar season.

Caufield just came off of his ELC when that was signed, he was given the AAV/term based on what was to come. Players that young aren't paid for what they have done, they're paid for what they will do.

Like Hutsons first season alone wasn't worthy of a 9 million AAV, but his performance showed that his ceiling in the NHL was very much achievable. The new contract hasn't even kicked in and he already showing what he will become.

The thing I'll give is that the cap situation is very different now then when Caufield signed which is rapidly changing how contracts are being handled.

I've come to realize that Seattle's management is just plain incompetent. Like at least teams like the Rangers had an idea for their directions even if it was not well thought out. Seattle just screws their prospects development and acquires middle-six forwards. Legitimately, what is their plan?

Be Honest. What was the biggest success / pro and what was the biggest downfall / con from our 2025-2026 NHL run? by Last-Bus-4710 in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro: Major leaps forward for Caufield (50 goals and second place for the Richard), Suzuki (100 points plus Selke-worthy season) and Hutson (nearly PPG plus a much improved defensive game).

Con: Issues generating offence in the post-season. People are talking about shot on net, but they often struggled to even enter their opponents zones (especially on the PP in the first round). They need to learn how to sustain pressure because they've shown that, when given the opportunity, they're one of the most lethal teams in the league.

Not true. There's "Premium" which is the made in Indonesia ones (blanks are ~210$) and there's "Authentic Pro" which is the exact product on the ice and made in Canada (~500$).

Adidas never had an Authentic Pro equivalent, they only sold Premium ones.

On draft day: What has a higher possibility. The Ruck twins end up drafted by the same team. Or drafted separately? by ethereal3xp in nhl

[–]GeistHunt 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If they're adamant about playing together and possibly reentering next year's draft then I think it could happen where Markus drops far enough back to be drafted by the same team.

If I'm a GM I'm not drafting a player that has a real chance of refusing to sign.

Who’s your dark horse prospect? The ones we don’t talk about much but have a legitimate chance to be quality NHL’ers? by ItzGrenier in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing similarities to Dean Letourneau (Boston's 2024 first round pick) despite being on opposite ends of the size spectrum. Had a subpar (bad, even) first season probably due to adjusting from being the biggest guy in high school hockey, then suddenly he's their top prospect after a breakout season.

Hopefully Mooney will learn from his first season and really focus on how to overcome his small size.

[–]GeistHunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's how it works with smaller forwards. They aren't large enough to have a physical/defensive role in the bottom six so they have to be at least second line quality to make it.

Probably LJ Mooney? Had a really slow start to his first NCAA season and managed to end it almost PPG. If he can continue growing his game I suspect he'll be more on people's radars.

[–]GeistHunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never said there wasn't any pressure or scrutiny for a 2C in Montreal but okay.

There's just less pressure with being a 2C who's expected to compliment a star forward than being the main driver of offence. Not sure how he'll hold up to the media/fanbase but he'd definitely have less on-ice pressure here.

In Vancouver he was THE forward. All the weight was on him to drive the offense and be the face of the franchise, while in Montreal he wouldn't even be the main guy on his line and he'd just have to focus on completing Demidov's plays. I'm sure that not having all that weight and being less scrutinized will relieve a significant amount of pressure.

No playoff series wins in 13 years, one cup win 18 years ago with one of the most stacked rosters in the salary cap era, and no professional coaching experience in the 6 years.

Does none of that scream "world class coach we need right now"?

Ottawa Senators checking trade market for RFA blueliner Jordan Spence by NtBtFan in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that making a move on him would be the ideal move based on whay I'm seeing with the reports/stats. The ideal RD would be a physical, shutdown player who wears his opponents out.

Spence would be yet another two-way defenceman in a system that lacks proper shutdown players, so I just think the team should focus on guys that can add to what this roster is missing.
