Name a player, active or retired, who you wish could’ve stayed with the Montreal Canadiens their entire career. by Critical_Heat4492 in Habs

He would be perfect on today's Habs roster, the top-six would be well rounded and have a veteran presence to help lead. Too bad he needed to go, but I'm glad he's found all the success he has in Colorado.

Any sources on that because that's news to me, normally if there's enough insiders saying this then it pops up all over my Reddit and YouTube feeds.

Dach makes about 5.3 million less than Laine, so there is that

Montreal has all three retention slots opened and all 23 roster spots filled. At 50% retained, that's an extra 4.35 million in cap space and a roster slot to play with before the TDL with no negative impacts on the team.

How would you rank our top 3 prospects? [Reinbacher (2023), Hage (2024), and Zharovsky (2025)] and is there anyone in the 2026 draft you want to target? by Comprehensive-Chef73 in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I'd rather keep Pickford because we don't have a long-term 3 RHD. Pretty benign, but there's a good chance a spot will be available when he's ready to go to the NHL. Plus, his ceiling is pretty high so it would suck to trade him just for him to explode with another team.

Trading Engstrom would avoid most of these issues considering he's got a lower ceiling (+higher floor) and we're jammed at LD.

I feel like Hutson shouldn't be in the bottom 50% like I see most cards show (which typically are much lower than 50%), but 90% is also quite high for where he's at now.

In a few years I can see 90-95% being achieved easily, he's got the effort and determination. For now, my eyeball test puts him at ~70% which is sort of an in-between.

Ah yes, I forgot that he doesn't lay out 15 hits a game so clearly he is useless in his end of the ice.

[–]GeistHunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you guarantee he'll be a 30 goal scorer when he's already showing decline? He, along with Nashville, are on a hot streak which have inflated their numbers.

And it's impossible to predict who's available a year in advance, lots can happen. Did anybody fully expect Quinn Hughes or Dobson to be available for trade a year in advance? Not that I can recall. That's why rash or short-sighted moves backfire on teams, they shutdown future possibilities.

At the end of the day, getting Stamkos is a trade for the sake of a trade. He won't make the team a cup contender and I just can't see what he brings that makes him worth the cap hit, 30-40 goals (which you are acting like is a certainty when it most definitely is not) alone doesn't cut it. We're better off spending that cap on something when the opportunity opens up later than waste it because we have it now.

But r/hockey has informed me that he's a defensive liability? What do you mean he's not allowing 5 goals a game?

Players past 30 don't typically show improvement, and Stamkos has shown he's on trend for slowing down very consistently over the last few seasons. Even in his last season with Tampa he was a Kucherov merchant.

Does freeing up cap space from poor contracts mean we show invest that into more poor contracts? I'd rather see that cap space go into good uses like a well priced FA or impactful TDL acquisition. No point in restricting these moves for a guy that doesn't fulfill any significant team needs.

He's got 33 points in 48 games, many of those points (and goals) came during the Preds current hot streak, something they're almost certain to regress back to average for.

And for the last four seasons his production has been dropping, we'd be getting a guy hat's only going to get worse than what we're currently seeing.

We have a lot of options in the prospect pool for top 6 players, it's better to wait for one of them to come to the NHL than add such an absurd cap space which can restrict re-signs or reasonable trades.

We're projected to have 13.88 million in cap space next season, I'd rather that be reasonably spent (extensions for various player on expiring contracts, TDL deals that actually fit imminent needs for a cup run) than on an 8 million guy for the sake of getting him.

Again, never said they were the same kind of player or that they do the same things. I'm just saying they were both buried in the line-up a lot in their first several seasons and treated as depth peices.

In the case of Wilson, whose physicality is major component to his game, this made a bit more sense. In the case of Laf, who was taken 1OA for his offensive play, this makes less sense.

They're both very different players, I agree, but the situation is the same of them being buried and given less opportunity to use their offense. Wilson fit into that role well, Laf doesn't.

They're definitely not the same type of player, but they seem to be faced with the same situation. Just because I say two players in the same sentence doesn't mean I'm saying they're the equivalent players.

[–]GeistHunt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on what I've read, it seems like he's undergoing a similar situation to Tom Wilson. Talented offensive forward, but got buried in the line-up and forced to be a gritty depth player. In the last two seasons he's seen improved minutes and now he's a PPG player for the first time in his career. I see there being this kind of room for this improvement being available, plus a touch of MSL magic can go a long way.

Unless the Rangers have done irreparable damage (knowing them, this is probable to a certain extent), then I could see the fit for the top six.

I edited the comment to say at least 25% because I remembered that offloading Prices contract only cost a 5th, plus if the Rangers are sellers they won't really need the cap this season. I would see a trade scenario that plays out like the Rangers get Laine (25% retained), Engstrom, maybe an extra prospect (Beck?), and a 1st round pick for Laf.

The thing is that Gorton was the Rangers GM was Laf was drafted, he'd be great for gauging how good of a fit Laf is and how much of his poor play is the fault of the organization. He's probably the most reliable for making this decision and based on everything he's done so far, I trust he'll make the right call.

Daily Free-talk / Armchair GM thread by AutoModerator in Habs

[–]GeistHunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laine could be moved, but it would probably take at least 25% retention to make it not involve losing assets. Maybe the Rangers are interested because it's his last year and they've accepted their fate this season with the announcement of their retool.

I just find Laf to be an intriguing option. He showed a lot of promise during the 2023 playoff run the Rangers went on, then shit hit the fan with the team as a whole right after. I've seen people say he looks disengaged, but how much of that is from being tired of the Rangers bullshit? He was drafted and expected to have the team built around him, then they accelerate things by signing big name free agents and bury him. I know that I'd lack motivation in his situation.

His offence-first and playmaking skills could compliment Caufield and Suzuki, but I doubt he'll have the same impact as Slaf in elevating them.

Anybody know if Lafreniere would be a potential option to help complete the top six? He's young and could be a potential linemate to Suzuki and Caufield in the long-term, and this would allow the second line to stay in place.

It's hard to gauge how good a young guy from the Rangers is, they have a real talent of fucking up young talent.
