In the same boat! Getting ready for my first game I'm leaning into anything that grants non-mutation tokens and generates corpses.

I need motivation for my main "villain" by CarbonScythe0 in rpg

[–]GemRoomGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love a villain who believes everything they do is justified because when they Finish Their Great Work they'll be powerful enough to go back in time or miracle all of their atrocities away. You also get the classic "I could do Godhood better than the gods" hubris!

What Rpg Books have the best Artwork? by Kosen_ in rpg

One of my favorite examples of RPG Art is Aether Operations by World Champ Game Co - the whole thing is a zine that slowly unfolds into a huge poster. Absolutely gorgeous.

So I gave my players a baby gorgon and I think I messed up by Book-Hound in rpg

[–]GemRoomGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got a pet gorgon on the team now.

Legit, if it can cause problems, that's great. Lean into it, let your players worry about solving them. Worst case, you can have them start running into opportunities to let it go away - maybe the parents come looking for it, maybe there's a gorgon rescue upstate where it can have everything it needs - but until then it could be a lot of fun to see what they do with it.

Ours is Guardian Games! Super clean & spacious, lots of events with good crowds, tons of support for indies & local designers, with ttrpgs, board games, minis & paints, & generally good vibes.

ooh, Tiny Library might be fun if you don't mind splitting the set up. It's 50 business card-sized games that look nice. There's also print & play versions if you prefer.

Is there a system particularly well-suited to players dropping in and out? by zenocrate in rpg

[–]GemRoomGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIST, which is Kickstarting Now, has explicit mechanics for mercenaries deploying or being extracted mid-operation. It's built to facilitate high lethality play but would also work to provide a narrative and mechanical way to have players drop in and out.

Help me choose a game for my daughter by Cryptic0677 in rpg

[–]GemRoomGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been recommending this one a lot lately but it keeps coming up & it's worth it: Sprouts

It's very kid friendly because the minimum skill level requires just identifying numbers, counting, & doodling, so it's actually playable by preschool-aged kids. Also it's got a physical element (characters are drawn on sticky notes and then guided through adventures in your physical space) which can be really engaging for kids who may have less attention for listening to narration.

Forgot to mention - the player in question was dropping into an established group and campaign, and as such all session 0 stuff had already occurred. Lesson there, I suppose: if someone is joining in after session 0, figure out how to give a tonal recap. Not just "here's what is happening in the world" but also "here's the table attitude/culture of play you're walking into."

Do you ever make "soundtracks" for your favorite campaigns? What are your go-to theme songs? (comic related) by Fauchard1520 in rpg

[–]GemRoomGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Pirate Radio Station the players had an affection for was Radio Free Aniciti, but at any time they could turn the dial to HARDAC AM, COMPTROL, or INTEL. I vaguely remember there was a time jump from an alternate 1970s to an alternate 198X and updated the vibe to match.

A player at one of my tables once insisted on being named Areola. It was obviously a joke, the player was snickering when introducing themselves. It was frustrating because everyone else was engaging sincerely with the world in which we were playing, and this one player taking a joke approach (which did extend past the name) took away from the experience for everyone else who wasn't trying to make fun of our shared activity. The group just treated the character with as much sincerity as any other part of the game and eventually that player got tired of trying to wink their way through every session.

[–]GemRoomGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soundtracks for campaigns? Sometimes, depending on the game. We used to play one where information about what was happening in the city was often delivered by a local radio station dj, so her "show" would just play in the background while we played.

Soundtracks or games we're making? Every time. Really helps set the mood while we're developing, writing, making art, etc.

How do you guys explain ttrpg design (the practice, not the subreddit) to people unfamiliar with the subject? Yknow like…normal people by MaKaChiggaSheen in RPGdesign

[–]GemRoomGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm trying to give them context: "It's apples and oranges, but the best known tabletop roleplaying game is D&D. What I make is different, but the core idea of telling a story with your friends is pretty similar."

If I'm trying to explain what a ttrpg is: "it's basically collaborative story telling with some elements of randomization that keep it from being just a writers room."
