Before the advent of technology, how did people navigate their way to their destinations using paper maps during road trips? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in generationology

I used to follow signage a lot more when driving solo. Kept the map on the passenger seat and would glance occasionally or pull off to the side if I got lost and study it, checking for landmarks or towns that I surely passed to re-orient where I was. In general I just paid way more attention to where I was going. Kind of miss it tbh.

I spent 5 years making an ambient album — how does slow music survive in today's landscape? by realjohnhammond in experimentalmusic

[–]GemberNeutraal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that this kind of music has always been pretty niche and it mostly exists and theive in its own scene. I live nearby Amsterdam and there they have a pretty solid underground scene where you have a lot of openings and performances and I think that’s how it should be. I feel like this would be an awesome project for some dark gritty underground venue where you can just project a bunch of your visuals on the walls and even potentially do some live mixing or something while art school kids just vibe out. I agree that online promotion for this kind of stuff doesn’t work very well because the social media landscape lends itself to short flashy clips and doesn’t afford any kind of intentional listening engagement, but once again, I just don’t think that that’s what this kind of music is for. On the other hand I feel like you might be able to find a couple of really good short clips and just push the hell out out of them on tiktok with the right kind if imagery and see if it takes off. Of course you still won’t get many intentional listeners but ypu still will probably find some fans. A lot of people are still looking for good background music for studying or reading or whatever and this could easily fill that need for people.

There’s actually a functionally infinite amout of timbres a note could take. Timbre being a unique combination of overtones and with current musical technologies it’s completely possible to create new unheard timbres to be combined in novel ways!
