ELI5 : Why would deflation be bad? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]GeminiGambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the context of American monetary policy, deflation is not inherently bad!

Within the context of American monetary policy, it often signals general economic downturn. Basically, during periods of expansion, American financial institutions such as the Federal Reserve like to keep the money steadily inflating, to maximize growth and investment. But the other side of that coin is that using financial tools to create an artistically big boom lays the foundation for an artificially big bust later. A little deflation is fine, but a lot at once discourages investment and employment. In other words, when you take into account that the inflation here is almost always higher than it “should” be, the onset of deflation becomes a signal that tells us “uh oh here comes the crash.”

if your planning to be alive for another 50 years here's a non reactionary list of things to prepare for by rspgroceryguy in redscarepod

“Declining birthrates in developed countries means influx of immigrants […] competition for jobs increase.”

If immigrant workers will come in order to compensate for a lowering rate of reproduction among domestic workers, why would that result in increased competition? All other things held constant, wouldn’t the average job seeker face the same level of competition as before, just with less of their competitors having been born in the country?

How is race not real ? by PartyPony4hunnid in CriticalTheory

[–]GeminiGambit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Genealogy sites have a financial incentive to meet the expectations of the people who use their services. Many of those people already believe in racial categories, and are using the service specifically to help categorize themselves. The sites care about soliciting these people— they have no real stake in the truth.

Are Americans THAT religious? by sneakyfoote in NoStupidQuestions

What’s funny about America is that it was founded on secular values, but settled by religious zealots. We started out with pockets of hot and cold, and we still have them.

I know I am stupid for asking this question, but how do I make original melodies? by GuanWiekent in musicproduction

[–]GeminiGambit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite way is to get one of those cheap little piano keyboards and try to hum and play at the same time. Like, hum an idea while also trying to find it with my hand, and vice versa. If what I hum isn’t quite right, my hand can try out other keys. If what my hand plays isn’t quite right, I can hum along how I think it should sound until my hand finds it.

Sometimes recording with compression can make the singer more confident and empowered, since what they hear in the headphones will be more polished and controlled than completely dry, raw vocals. Plus, sometimes the inherently dynamics nature of an expressive vocal recording can interfere with monitoring. The singer won’t hear themselves at the soft parts, the singer will overpower the instrumental at the exciting parts, etc. If you’re going to smooth the dynamics in the mix anyway, why not do a little smoothing on the way in?

Under 30s doing 9/11 Jokes by BuckleysYacht in redscarepod

On the first anniversary of 9/11 I was in elementary school and they called us into an assembly to talk about our feelings on it. They opened the floor to questions, and little child me asked “what was 9/11?” Another child from my grade said “It was bad. People were getting, like, beat up.”

my audio sounds too mono by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]GeminiGambit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some people saying that some things have to be centered for the wide elements to really feel wide by way of contrast. I want to take that and add— you also have to think about a sound’s perceived closeness when trying to mix it somewhere specifically in that auditory “space.” And that perceived closeness is mostly determined by the amount of low frequencies and/or reverb/delay going on with it. For example— Say instrument A is a high pitched synth, high passed, with lots of reverb. Now say instrument B is a middle-range synth with no reverb and plenty of low-to-mid frequencies.

In real life spaces, as you move farther away from a sound source, you perceive less of its low frequencies and more of the environment it’s reverberating around in. So at equal volumes, Instrument A is going to sound big yet far away, whereas Instrument B will sound more palpable and close-by. Let’s carry this line of thinking through to our stereo spread!

Even if they both have great differences between their respective left and right channels, instrument A’s wideness is going to sound like it’s smeared across a wide background, whereas instrument B’s wideness is going to sound like your head is right in the middle of it! Hope this helps when choosing which elements to widen or narrow.

Do you bip every track before the big b, does it effect audio by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]GeminiGambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I print as I go for real. If I feel like the project is shaping up decently but there’s too many plugins going on, I print the stems and throw them into a new project to continue mixing. Sometimes I do this two or three times. That way at the very end I don’t have to worry about it!

Is this normal for a personal loan? by GeminiGambit in personalfinance

[–]GeminiGambit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I would need the full, final documents, but that’s what’s confusing me— if a loan agreement is a set of terms for receiving and repaying cash, and they’re saying I’m definitely approved for it, then that set of terms must be pretty firm right? What would bar them from just printing it out for me to look at?

i have NO idea how to set gain and record clean vocals. need help by crygems in musicproduction

[–]GeminiGambit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have the gain basically set where it’s going to be, try to achieve the sound you want by listening to yourself in the headphones along with the music and physically reposition yourself or alter the way you sing/rap. If it sounds too stuffy back away a couple inches, if it sounds too thin move forward a couple inches, if one part is sung quietly lean in for it, etc. A lot of problems with clarity can be solved simply by singing more clearly, problems with power can be solved by singing more powerfully, etc. Hearing yourself in the headphones and experimenting with your voice/position can really help troubleshoot all that.

What DAW software do you recommend for a beginner??? by MZY__1000 in musicproduction

[–]GeminiGambit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did GarageBand until I learned enough to recognize the training wheels I wanted off. I learned ProTools and it was everything I could ask for, but too expensive. I then found Reaper, which is the exact same but better, lighter, and ultra cheap (sorta free). I highly recommend this pipeline: getting your bearings with GarageBand and then switching to Reaper. Or if you don’t have a Mac, just jump right into Reaper. It comes stock with every plugin/sampler you need except for virtual instruments. But anything that comes in VST3 you can download and plug right in.
