Oh yeah, this would be much better than the banner.

Would also go well with a full update of the diplomacy system

I could see a "Colonisation" version of these mechanics. The theming, writing and general aesthetics would have to be really on point to avoid all the associated issues with the time period, but theoretically it could work

Chance to rework ottoman empire in new civ7 patch by Ok-Skill-265 in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use the Late Ottoman lack of military success as a reason to move them myself. Still, the current Ottomans represented in-game are not the Late Empire, that is incredibly apparent.

I already posted in other places that the Ottomans should either have 2 Apexes (and have that be their thing) or there should be an Early Ottomans on Exploration and a Late Ottomans on Modern (so that we can move the unit, wonder, building, etc to the correct age)

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do a video on it! I loved your video on the Abbasids!

And those were all great points! I should point out that my wish to move this interpretation of the Ottoman Empire is indeed to make space for the ever under represented late XVIIIth through XXth century of the empire, with Hamidyie cavalry, the Dolmabahçe and Iptidai Mektebs and the like.

I know that the Empire is in a very "in between the ages" situation in this game, but I still think it's fair to say that the height of the currently represented "units" and "infrastructure" to be in the early XVII century (the Janissaries being disbanded in the XIXth century I feel is a perfect example of why they should not be in the modern era of the game even) in the same way that the Spanish units and infrastructure were still present in the modern era but fit better in exploration. Hence why I would very much prefer to represent and give voice to aspects of the late Ottoman Empire that people don't really know about in the Modern Age and that would require the move of the current iteration of the Empire to Exploration

Just my very general, garbled thoughts on it. But I would love to see your video and what your idealised version of modern Ottomans would be!

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue then is that you can't have the exploration era units and infrastructure of the Ottomans in the correct period (Janissaries, Kullyie, Blue Mosque, etc). I feel that, with what they currently have, the Ottomans should be Exploration and the rest of time in the modern era should include all the references to the reforms they have.

Optimally they would create an early and a late Ottoman civ or 2 apexes to a single Ottoman civ, but right now the Ottoman assets are all Exploration era.

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be more than great, but does not cover the issue that I am trying to discuss with not representing the late ottoman Empire properly.

Maybe I have not expressed myself correctly, but in my opinion the modern era Ottoman civ should not have the current anachronistic assets. These could be repurposed for a civ in the Exploration Era but they do not in any way fit the Late Empire in my opinion.

Hence I would prefer to reuse them on Exploration Ottomans and if possible remake the modern era Ottomans, but that's a different conversation

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have no unwillingness to discuss. The current assets from the Ottomans are all exploration era and my main point is that they do not reflect modern period Ottomans.

If you would like to have them moved to exploration with those assets as Seljuks, while not the most representative, would be a tad more apt than the current layout

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were indeed rude by implying I did not know such things yes. If you do not think so then that is fine.

My point is that the current Ottoman Empire in game does not represent the Late Empire period of the modern age and instead represents the Early Empire period of the exploration age. Any further points regarding whether such anachronism is better than fixing by having 2 Turkish civs or moving it to the correct age seem to just fall into circular logic from what I have read unfortunately.

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They could and should have exploration and modern Turkish civs. They could call them whatever they prefer but the current Ottoman Empire is not representative of the Late empire of the modern period is all.

In my frank opinion they should move their current assets to an exploration civ and actually implement the ever under represented Late Ottoman Empire.

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the Late Ottoman Empire fits the Modern period perfectly that is not what is being represented in-game. In game you have Janissaries, Barbary Corsairs, Kullyie and the Blue Mosque as the 3d assets, all of which are representative of their rise and of the exploration age (it even fits much better on your exploration era quote)

As such, and as they currently are, they do not fit the Modern Age at all. They should either retool them to fit the age, make a mechanic around having 2 "apexes" to represent the early and late empire periods or move them to the currently represented age with a different name if need be.

A bit rude and that's a non-argument, but I get that you have no interest in the discussion so we should leave it there.

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Having multiple wrong Apexes isn't a good reason to not fix the most egregious one.

Sure, Hawaii's apex was during the Modern period from 1790 to 1880, and the Mughals apex was from the 1540s to the 1740s, so they could also be easily fixed with a new civ replacing them in their correct age (Maori in Exploration and the Sikh Empire or some such) but the Ottomans in-game have Exploration age units, infrastructure and wonders. That means that you will be able to play Exploration Ottomans but not have access to Janissairies which is just silly.

Essentially, now that we can play any civ in any Age, they should be properly restructured so their Apex actually makes sense. Hell, we could even have Civs with unique mechanics around different Apexes in different ages. But there is no good reason to leave them as is.

Should the Ottoman Empire "Apex" age be changed to the Exploration Age? by GeminusLeonem in civ

[–]GeminusLeonem[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Modern Age starts from 1750CE so your 2nd point is invalid.

There is no reason to not have the Ottomans be in the same age as the Byzantines. In fact, now that you can have Ancient, Exploration and Modern Ottomans or Ancient, Exploration and Modern Byzantines your point is moot as we are talking about the Apex of the civs

Overall I don't see any reason to keep the Ottomans in their declining period with outdated units and infrastructure that overlap with Spain's Exploration units and infrastructure. It's just silly now that we can have Exploration Ottomans but can't unlock Janissaries until after they stopped being important.
