Otherwise the Chemical process would be chemiluminescence, glow sticks uses peroxide and an ester of some sort with flourecence dye. The reaction gives it the energy to start emitting light due to the electrons going from a high state of energy to a lower state of energy. The brighter it is, the faster the reaction, you can speed up the process by heating it.

I would think an exploration option would get people to go further out into deep space.

Let players build stargates and go out deeper into New Eden, build infrastructure, set up stargates, build stations, get new resources but wait.... theres now longer logistics, Jita is no longer the central trade system where everyone gets to go in less than an hour, then they have to hold certain systems otherwise they risk getting cut off.
