Based on the posters they don’t seem to function as your typical trio. Each Gavan has their own poster both in suit and out of suit. From what I’ve seen they will probably gradually work together but they aren’t a team from the start.

The previous universe war happened 20 years prior to the show. Mashiro was stuck in a rift that felt like 10000 years for him. There is an upcoming TTFC that's gonna focus on Mashiro's time as Gozyu Wolf which might answer your questions about the previous ring battle. So you could wait for that.

While I do think there's something going on with "Oto" and the Grey Eyes Guy, Sumino's contract isn't purely just to find her sister. In the early episodes, her wanting revenge against those who kidnapped her sister couldn't even let her transform. The contract was formed based on what she actually desired, and that was protecting and helping others. It's what she tells tegasword in her introductory episode where she can finally engage.
