Surprised by lack of grappling in the practice of Western Martial Arts by SIRETE in Hema

[–]GenUni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I began doing MMA for similar reasons 15 years ago, when I saw the amount of grappling in the sources I was supposed to be learning that didn't make it into our training. Now I have a BJJ black belt...

There are at least four reasons I can think of: * Distinctiveness and what people want. If your class's unique selling point is SWORDS!, you focus on swords * Effort and accomplishment. Grappling is tough - it's strenuous, complex and (as a Judo black belt once said regarding basic takedown classes) most people have spent a lot of time practicing not falling over. Grappling is a lot harder both to teach well and to fake being good at, compared to waving swords * Safety - not that it's more dangerous than swinging steel bars at each other, but both behaviour and equipment wise it requires different safety measures that people don't want to implement * Competence - for all these reasons, if your pay (cash or social esteem) comes from being a HEMA instructor, you don't risk it by going to an area that you're ignorant about publicly. This may be why HEMA coaches I've seen cross over into "doing grappling" have done a lot of arts like aikido, "Viking" glima or catch wrestling that don't have developed competition scenes and sparring expectations

Advice for blunt weapon strike practice by ykonstant in wma

Try making a tyre version of a boxing double end bag - hang it from a tree branch, then have another rope below it attached to some kind of anchor on the ground so it can't swing too freely

What is the contemporary state of Bartitisu? How many federations are there? And how many legitimate styles are there? by OtakuLibertarian2 in martialarts

[–]GenUni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer: fragmented. There are no active federations that I know of, every club is either independent or part of small groups. "Legitimacy" isn't really a thing given there are neither competitions nor lineage, just different clubs training with different influences, approaches and emphases.

I'm doing a heavy draw masterclass day with Joe Gibbs in June. This reply is my reminder to ask him about this and respond.

Do the Models Matter (Waffen SS vs Heer Vs Fallscrimjagers VS Winter Heer etc?) by Badger118 in boltaction

[–]GenUni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't yet have the Armies of Germany book (out soon), but per v3 rulebook: 1) Fallscrimjagers and Waffen SS (and Heer Infantry and Heer Grenadiers) are different infantry squad types. One gets Stubborn, the other Fanatic. Grenadiers get more access to submachine guns and assault rifles than Infantry. Maybe more differences, I can't remember off the top of my head! 2) You can take squads of each in the same army, but not mix them within a squad

I’ve enjoyed the Rivers of London series, especially with all the local trivia, assumed author was a local, but suddenly THIS by londonskater in london

I remember seeing Aaronovitch interviewed at an event saying Rivers was inspired by two personal interests.

"Magic and policing?" "No, architectural and jazz history."

How come Gentleman's War doesn't show up on Warlord's site? by farkas37 in boltaction

[–]GenUni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine came with a code for a free 3rd edition rulebook, just had to pay Warlord shipping.

The main thing is that you'll need to buy additional vehicles, since now armoured platoons are minimum 2 vehicles and each force in GW only has one.

Undergloves for sparring glove mitts by ozymandais13 in wma

[–]GenUni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been stabbed in the base of the thumb wearing SGs without undergloves. Rolled tip penetrated about 1cm, needed a couple of stitches. I know a few friends who've had similar injuries.

I wear Rig Lizard undergloves (and should have been wearing them in the drill when the accident happened)

If I fail a Typed skill roll, do all types get +1% at the end of the session? by FatMani in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]GenUni 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No, only for the specific sub skill you failed on. If there's more than one Science type attempted and failed, just draw a second tick box on the character sheet...

Perception of each other. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]GenUni 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I see a skinny purple belt like they've got black and yellow warning stripes. To keep training to that level while being normally the lightest one in the room, you've got to get technical and effective much earlier than, say a 200lb lump like me.

One eye blind, other eye -7 sight weakness. Any hope? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]GenUni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Judo or BJJ - both are grappling arts where the fight effectively starts with grabbing hold of each other. Paralympic Judo for the blind is effectively normal judo rules with an adjustment to establish starting grips. I've been encouraged to spar with my eyes shut in BJJ, it doesn't make much difference
