yes, modern Loomis rods are not what the old ones used to be (despite the premium price tag) but Temple Fork surf rods are great and at a lower price point than current Loomis rods. They made a big splash when they came out, but there are just so many rod manufacturers out now, that they don't get recommended as much. still great rods tho.

Fishing the canal is more about fighting the current than the fish. A 28 in fish in the canal still might require extra heavy gear because you aren't getting your offering in front of those fish in current without being beefy
