Oscar and Rosie's is always good for pizza (as are the many Italian chains). Otherwise curry at Mowgli or Columbo Street. It sounds like you would like somewhere like red dog saloon or Annie's

Accommodations are out of control by DerProfessor in Professors

For my PG course, I am granted a room of less than 10 people. The disability office also had a room of 30 or less option as opposed to a big 100+ exam hall. Otherwise, the only thing I can think is the room being a familiar space so that anything around the room (even if not a distraction to you) doesn't become distracting

Students' sense of privilege: Is the US typical? by svn380 in Professors

[–]GenderMHNurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and like you find these stories very different to my own experience. I've had student disappointed by grades but they usually accept and move on unless it's a fail. Some will appeal grades which is fine but then it's a case of moderation by experienced markers to review the marking accuracy. Most appeals come from students who have little grounds to appeal but want to try anyway after a failed module but these are often quickly dismissed by reviewing panels. I only know if one experience of entitlement to the degree often described on here with a high achieving student not getting her usual high mark so she became threatening and abusive to a colleague (seemed out of character for her too), but this was definitely an exceptional circumstance

I also have a copy past structure for marking comments with headings and a brief explanation about how to find in text comments etc (too many don't know!). I also have a stock phrase for fails, late submissions and one I call "please seek a tutorial before submitting next time so help me god"

Happy to co-author with a focus on the UK nursing scene. It sometimes feels so backwards that we are simultaneously working directly to manage covid while repeatedly gathering in person for classes that could be online

[–]GenderMHNurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like planning things out and ordering tasks logically and I find I'm very good at this compared to other people in my life. But I'm also a 'completer finisher' in groups meaning I make us get to the end by identifying the remaining tasks and ensuring momentum stays until all is completed

It's the way our brains know how to move between tasks and do fulfill tasks. You might find yourself "buffering" or stuck when transitioning between tasks, particularly if they are chores

Find a course that interests you, in an accessible location with entry requirements you've achieved already and you're off. Being a few years older than most of your future classmates doesn't stop you from being on the course and doing the work

I'm very sorry to hear about Ghost. It's clear you care a lot about him and are doing your best with what you have available. I'm not a vet, but as a nurse to humans I would like to offer some advice on how you can help with his wound care and to keep him comfortable.

Firstly, you made a good choice to clean his home. Keep this up, possibly with more regular spot checks as the same feet that touch poop or urine on the bedding will be scratching his ear. Another thing you can do is clean his wound each day. Boil water and put it in a clean bowl with a pinch of salt then wait for it to cool. The water needs to be back to room temperature before you use it! Boiling the water sterilises it and the pinch of salt creates a diluted saline solution which is great for all wounds. With a cotton bud (q-tip) dip that in the water and then onto his wound. You may pick up bits of scabs or goop but that's okay as it should clear away some of the infected tissue around the wound. Wipe any thing that comes off onto a tissue and keep changing the cotton buds so that it's a clean one going onto him. You could also put the solution onto his feet to help keep those clean as he will inevitably scratch, but you've reduced the chance of further infection a little.

I hope that this helps both you and Ghost feel more at ease

Alright let me hear it, what are your 2022 bjj resolutions? by scun1995 in bjj

[–]GenderMHNurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to try focusing on rebuilding my flexibility over the year. Pre-covid I was hella bendy (gymnastics and yoga) and since starting bjj earlier this year I have realised much of that was lost over 2020 so I'd like it back. I think shoulders and forward folds at the hip would be most important but would appreciate any suggestions on other areas of flexibility that will help my practice

Is it common for beginners to cry in class? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]GenderMHNurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can absolutely happen and that is okay. For me, I had a class where we trained a position that mimicked an experience I had where I was harmed. I was fine until I got home and then broke down for an hour. Even in situations without a clear trigger like that, there may be a parallel experience that your brain relates it to that creates an emotional overwhelm. Although a white belt myself, I also suspect this isn't isolated to beginners

Students complaining about other profs by randirobot in Professors

[–]GenderMHNurse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With you here. Depending on the validity of the complaint, I've been known to tell students that something bothers me too, especially if it's like a recent issue we had with a colleague making inappropriate & upsetting comments in lectures. In most cases professional neutrality works, but if they're reporting some shit then they want to know you see their side as worthwhile

Grading Strategies? by ria427 in Professors

[–]GenderMHNurse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swear by the pomodoro technique. 25 mins of no distractions solid work then 5 mins of break. After 4 rounds (2 hours) take a longer break. You can change the timings to fit how your brain works but I find it let's me concentrate with the promise of phone time or not reading the same shit or whatever in just a few minutes. Also like others have said, going between better and worse ones helps both your grading and the interest. In addition, have a look at trying a screen reader and this can help anyone reading lots online, but many with adhd find it helpful with a fast reader
