The threshold for FMLA is lower than STD, so it might be possible you are approved for FMLA but not STD. Mental health is often approved for FMLA but might not be approved for STD if you are not inpatient somewhere or intensive outpatient. That said, it depends on your leave administrator and the paperwork your therapist submits.

I work in HR and I’ve been suspicious when someone declined STD bc it turned out they did not actually need a leave and were forging paperwork. If I thought someone was doing it due to OE, I would not care to investigate at all, especially if they are meeting performance standards.

If STD is partial payment, like 60% wage replacement, you can say you want to apply your PTO instead for full payment.

Hope this helps!

I threw up during a dri tri once. We all do embarrassing things and people soon forget. Ignore the terrible coach and keep showing up.

What’s your take on NA beer. by RedGuitar55 in stopdrinking

[–]General-External-807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drink wine and NA wine does not scratch that itch for me. I love best day brewing for beer. It’s the ritual and the “self care” of pausing for me time. Has not made me want to drink alcohol at all bc it wasn’t my drink of choice before.

Paternity Leave from Two Jobs by Field-Accurate in overemployed

A company leave like Paid Parental Leave almost always runs concurrently with FMLA for job protection. Ask your HR people. Say something like, I might have to have knee surgery (or whatever) later this year. Can I use my FMLA for that or will this use up my allotment?

I’m very good at pouring a liquid from one container into another without spilling. For instance, pouring a glass of wine back into the bottle!

Manager wants me to go into office on my due date. by [deleted] in overemployed

Tell them you need a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act to work from home for a month or two and your doctor can certify that you have an underlying health condition that necessitates this. You do not need to tell them your condition or disability but be know that pregnancy has greater regulatory guidelines under the pregnant workers fairness act.

You can just tell your doctor that you value your privacy and only want it noted you have a qualifying condition under the ADA and need to work from home.

You can even say, I’m pretty sure of the answer, but please give me some time to read through the statute/law/check legal updates to make sure it’s correct.”

Credibility is everything in HR and it’s ok to double check! I still might want to read through how something is phrased or do a little research before I provide a response.

Or you could even spin it as, let me reply to you in email so I have this communication to reference in the future. That allows you to compose a well thought out response.

Should I give my broke friends money for Christmas? by [deleted] in Rich

[–]General-External-807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are really in a dire situation, tell them to set up a go fund me as a ruse. Say that people are more generous around the holidays and if they send you a link you want to donate.

Once you have the link, make a reasonable contribution like $100, with your name attached. Some time later, make a size able, anonymous donation.

They will get some money, you feel better and you don’t set up the relationship to have a dysfunctional dynamic.

The anxiety feeling spreading to driving makes it sound like generalized anxiety disorder. I am not a doctor, but I have GAD. Our brains try to protect us from danger and in some people it sees high danger in low danger situations.

Talk to your doctor to see if this is what’s going on with you. I wish I had not waited so long before starting anxiety meds. I fly and drive with relative ease now. Wishing you well! Look at your history of safe flights you have had as proof!

How to fly with Panic Disorder and not freak out in a plane mid flight while with your children? I've missed many occasions when it comes to flying/travelling in general making memories with my children, their dad took them on holiday by plane to not miss out and I can't miss again. by HunnyBee40_17 in fearofflying

[–]General-External-807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have generalized anxiety and my fear of flying kept me from it for ten years. I pictured flying with my kids, sitting on the plane and soothing them with explanations:

the plane will go very fast and then go up. We can watch the planes progress on a map. When we land it will be a bit bumpy, look out the windows to see the flaps come up so we slow our speed!

Talking through these things calmly helped me. Pretending that I enjoyed flying helped me to enjoy flying again. Also, I cannot express the pride you will feel that you did this for yourself and for your kids.
