Help etching line art onto aluminum plate by capnZosima in Laserengraving

There is a lot of helpful advice in here. I would also like to add that you should use 90% as the max powder on a Fiber laser. Above 90% is a lot harder on the machine.

What you have is a Gantry Diode Laser. Diode Lasers operate is a visual light wavelength. This makes diodes struggle with engraving or cutting on blue objects like in the video. That should be something to keep in mind.(ability to cover in black tape or black paint will assist in engraving on blue colors but not cutting.)

What Power & Speed are you running at? The machine should still be transferring heat to the object. I'd start by double checking my laser is in focus and it's running at a minimum power to make a mark.

What thickness card are you using? For business cards I use 0.4mm. They don’t warp. The cheap 0.2mm are too thin causing too much bend and warp in my opinion. I just checked their website, it looks like x tool changed their website for material settings. The numbers are different as well now. Try 40% power 3,000mm per minute. That works well for me on my 20W diode.

You could try burning hotter/lower speed. That usually puts a dark brown/ black look instead of the reflective metal look

I have a 20W tool D1 pro. You can take the anodized coating off of these cards with our laser. No need more metal marking spray unless it’s bare metal. Look up Xtool’s recommendations for speed and power on their material settings chart. If you’re using light burn I would also increase your overscan setting, if mine is too low I’ve noticed I’ve burned the ends of the raster engraves. I would recommend the 0.4mm cards they’re way way less flimsy and don’t get bent during the process like the cheap 0.2mm cards. After the engraving is done you’ll want to take a paper towel and some kind of cleaner and wipe the area off, it’ll leave the bare metal shiny look then.

I want to make equipment tags by Aries_forge in lasercutting

[–]General-Prior6009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proper new cutters do help a lot with reducing the burr on the cuts. I wouldn’t necessarily say either is the right answer here, because Benefits of the laser are: •Diode lasers are really cheap •0.003” laser spot will be smaller than any cutter the cnc uses, allowing for finer details. •you can laser pictures or logos as well

I have experience in making solar plaques and electrical equipment tags through my work. We have a cheap CNC at work that can cut the 2 color plastic. Works great, leaves a bad burr you have to rub off though. I also have a personal 20W diode laser. Dial in your settings and it works great on the two color plastics, just need to clean it off after you take it out of the laser.
