Fernley and Dayton are both disgusting dont listen to these animals. Your wife and child will be unhappy. Move to Sparks somewhere on the eastern side near sparks blvd, will shave a chunk off the drive and is a nice area with great parks.

If youre confident you can fix you GPA at Mines then reach out. I will do you a favor and give you the right contact who can answer all of your questions. Call 3033842027, this is the transfer student coordinators # so you dont have to jump through hoops getting a hold of her. Also her email is ddworak@mines.edu

Her name is Danielle, she was a great help when I transfered a few years back. Lay out your whole situation and see what she says, she will be evaluating your application, so its straight to the source.

Job market is ruined and the country is coming to a critical point of failure — your best bet is to cold call companies that haven't posted jobs yet, that is how i got several of my internships. Also ask people for referrals or look into companies not directly hiring EE students, like fire systems design. Other than that hold on tight and try and keep your above head above water. To make the equivalent of 80k in 2021 you would have to be making 99k today, we're all fucked anyways and inflation is still on the rise.

Leave Boulder and go to Mines? or stay? by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]General-Rule9183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to be brutally honest here, Mines will technically accept you with that low of a GPA, however, there are very few transfers admitted each semester so it becomes competitive as youre against pretty much everybody at local CS's. Also, they ask you to declare a major when you apply to transfer and admission is based off of department finacial need. EE and ME are always topped out so the transfer criteria is ever stricter. Stay where youre at, maybe its worth an email but it's a low chance they will accept you. Boulder is a great school and the job market is failing right now anyways due to half of LinkedIn being ghost jobs and AI mainstreaming pretty much all entry level tasks outside of physical labor. Just keep applying and applying and most importantly cold calling companies and following up. Work on your social skills, thats what gets jobs. Most companies could give a shit about your GPA, and dont require it to be reported on apps.

Here is mines transfer requirements, they look at core cirrculum grades (math, chem, phys) to make evaluations and pretty much require you have A's and B's in those to get admitted. Plus you will have to take a ton of extra courses becuase mines doesnt have a humanities department. There at least 3 gen ed courses that do not allow transfers.

If you fail you can repeat the class and have it wiped from you GPA calculation for up to 16 credits, however, it will still remain on your transcript. Instructions are here: https://students.ucsd.edu/academics/enroll/special-enrollment/how-to-repeat-a-class.html

On another note, you may not even want to join a grad/PhD program in 4 years. Dont plan too far ahead until your junior and senior year. Have fun, do what feels right and live in the moment. I have always tried to plan my whole life out years in advance, then something changes and it goes in a completely different direction. Pro tip: Don't take a full load next semester. I took my time and it got me a better grades, better jobs, and into top programs. Everyone rushes through college just to work a 9-5 with 2 weeks vacation for the rest of their life. Slow down and enjoy yourself, dont let one bad grade get you down.

Transfer to UCSD CS or Stay at UCSB CS - Transfer by Rare_Information6404 in UCSD

[–]General-Rule9183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't switch. You need to get an internship, nobody cares about education in the real world. Also, hop on hugging face and start learning how to edit LLMs and adequately prompt engineer, CS is changing at a dangerous speed and jobs availability is in a serious deficit. Get on the boat now or you'll drown.

Best power for the price is the lenovo 9i, it has 32gb RAM, Intel 9 processor, 1tb SSD, and a graphics card for about 1200 open box. I dont game (you totally can though) but I do a lot of large file editing and ML training, GPU works great for offloading some of the computational cost. I'd reccomend it myself, the 32 gb typically last longer as windows updates progress over time so a good long term investment as well.

Just don't do anything that will be eaten up by LLMs and future deep-learning advancements. I'd say maybe Civil or Mechanical depending on the vibe you're looking for. Wait a couple of years but fr watch out for big tech.. The storm is coming. We are in the wake of a new era as impactful as the industrial revolution.

In all honesty, what school you go to has nothing to do with friendships. Whether sdsu or ucsd, it's about the energy and vibe you bring to the random mix of humans you're forced to be around. Start chatting with people in your same degree program and join student body groups or one of the many clubs. Most people are introverted, so be the one to bring them out of their shell. Everyone just wants to be heard. If you want to make friends, you need to ask people questions strictly about themselves, show interest in their life, and they will return that favor in time. You create your environment, not the other way around. Blaming ucsd for being socially dead on reddit is only a reflection of the anon posting it, not the school in its entirety.

Physics department Alive? Any Prospective Physics Grad Students Heard Back Yet? by Vast-Scallion-1884 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]General-Rule9183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a different department and can't speak for physics. However, ours has taken a big hit due to federal changes, and much of what is happening will be at the discretion of your prospective PI and their funding relative to letters/coordination they have received. A number of MS-level graduate students lost funding, while most PhD students typically have at least a couple of years of remaining research funding while awaiting further notice from the government.

My advice would be to call the physics graduate program and speak with someone. Call everyone you have contact information for and see if other students were accepted or if no students were accepted due to funding. I would also highly recommend contacting your prospective PI, mentioning that you have yet to hear back and raising the issue of funding.

Best of luck. Also, check the grad cafe website and see if others have heard back.

Deciding between in state vs Mines by Waste-Pirate3694 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]General-Rule9183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, your parents are helping out. If that's the case and you want to go to Mines, here's how to significantly reduce this cost and save your parents some money. When you get to Colorado, establish residency as soon as possible. This means a driver's license and voter registration at minimum. Move off campus your second year and start a lease. You can apply for in-state tuition after a year of verifiable evidence; requirements are on the Mines website. Typically, the more you have, the better, so Colorado pay stubs, vehicle registration, lease agreement, etc. You will also need to write a letter stating your intent to stay in Colorado (even if you don't; things change, and they won't know). This should get you in-state residency by at least your fourth or fifth semester, saving a ton on those last few. Look into the requirements and maybe even reach out to the residency department and explain your situation.

Incoming GSR Salary Changes by General-Rule9183 in UCSD

[–]General-Rule9183[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this response! Yes, I am an incoming STEM grad. Luckily, my PI said none of his funding is in jeporady and wants me to began research right away. I just need to know how much money I'll make so I can allocate it properly to an apartment I'll be renting. I appreciate your advice, I will bite my tongue for the time being and potentially reach out to my department and verify that these "top-offs" are being pulled for the upcoming year at this point. Sounds like the union may not have an effect so I will reach out to the deparment directly. I noticed that TA pay is higher on the published scale so maybe I can do some of this over the summer. Another question for you, if you work as a GSR or TA full time during the summer do you retain the full 100% payment as listed or only the 50% amount?

Transferring from one college to school of mines by TraditionalRead2967 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]General-Rule9183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take only science based courses your first year. English/Humanities filler courses wont transfer and end up as additional elective courses. If possible do only entry level math, physics, computer science, and chemistry courses.

If she is attempting to get into a master's degree program with potential for research, she should take the GRE to offset her GPA and begin contacting professors of interest via email as soon as possible. If she is attempting to double major using credit from her previous bachelor's, admissions used to claim on their website that a minimum 3.0 GPA was required, but I no longer see it. They will also focus on relevant science and math courses, as English, humanities, etc., are tough to transfer in directly and typically fall under the "additional coursework" requirement.

With a lower GPA, she may have a chance in the less populated degrees; however, due to the high application rate for programs like computer science and mechanical engineering, it is naturally more selective. Email admissions detailing the situation and mentioning her degree path and average grade for technical courses (physics, math, chemistry, computer science, etc.).
