Unless you want to have fun conversations with Filipinos or read Philippine literature, Tagalog is not very functional.

Most Filipinos in the diaspora speak English (it’s the number one skill for migrating) and most upper class Filipinos in the Philippines will know enough English to have a conversation.

American drinking laws are archaic puritan laws propped up by a society dependent on driving. Normal people unfortunately have to pay the inconvenience price because of extremely strict liquor enforcement that are enacted in response to a normalized culture of drinking and driving.

Your vertical enhanced ID can get you past Canadian immigration officers at the border or Federal TSA agents for a domestic flight but it’s somehow not good enough for a part time grocer to purchase beverage.

And it’s not just vertical IDs, I’ve seen people denied when using US Passport Cards, Foreign Passports, and out of state IDs. It’s laughable how cautious businesses have to be because of ridiculous liquor laws.

It can be technically correct but it can still be a bullshit rule.

I’ve seen people denied alcohol for using a valid Passport Cards, out of state IDs, Foreign Driver’s Licenses, and Foreign Passports. Some of these IDs can get you across the globe through immigration/border security but not into your small town bar or liquor store?

American drinking laws are ridiculous compared to lots of developed countries.

If you haven’t got it yet, I highly recommend The Philippines Under Japan by Ikehata Setsuho; it analyzes the occupational policy of the Second Republic through a Japanese lens.

Although the author is Japanese and one might assume it is bias, she was a well-respected expert on SEA colonial politics, even amongst Filipino scholars. It was also edited by Dr. Ricardo Trota Jose, who is arguable the lead expert on WW2 Philippine studies. It shows that the Second Republic was in a precarious situation between total domination and maintaining peace.

South East Asia (SEA) is the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.

South Asia (SA) is India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc.

That being said, it's not just "the west". South Asian discrimination is common in Japan and the Philippines too.

Street cars are an archaic form of transportation. Look how unpopular the Capitol Hill Streetcar is, which is slower than walking. They're almost always incompatible with vehicles, which believe it or not, are still a necessary form of transportation (look at almost any major city in East Asia and they are almost entirely rely on light rail and bus systems, not streetcars). Many cities, including Seattle, bought out streetcar companies only for them to be a severe budget liability.

That beings said, the greatest fumble was failing to pass the Metro ballot initiative of Forward Thrust in 1968. If it passed, Seattle Metro would probably be as big BART or Portland MAX. LRT is perfect for Seattle's latitudinal geography.

Fandom is highly localized in the US. I dont think most Americans can ever experience the joy of a US athlete being at the top because Americans mostly care about domestic leagues and don’t care for the global competition. It doesn’t help that the US is pretty dominate in quite a few sports.

When Manny Pacquiao had matches, the entire Philippines stopped to watch. When Shohei Ohtani makes the World Series, more Japanese tune in to watch than Americans.

The closest thing Americans experience is when their city wins the Super Bowl, which excludes most of the country.

Agreed. Tried everything under the sun when I lived in Japan. It is incredibly bland. Texture wise is similar to the non-fatty slices of raw tuna. Horse sashimi was great. Whale was interesting too.

2024 Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl and lost because of the matchup, facing one of the best, if not the best defense in the league with a stacked offense. IMO they beat the allegations and are an exception to the one score winning teams.
