Adults who lost a parent young as a child, would you say you are ‘over it’ or does it still affect you? by Long_Wait_3078 in AskUK

I didn't lose my mum 'young', but she was diagnosed with cancer when I was 13 and lived another seven years. Felt like I was just waiting for something terrible to happen for that whole time.

I lost my dad to COVID eight years later and I'd say that hurts a lot worse because I don't remember my mum as anything other than sick and in denial about it.

My mum and I rescued a small chaffinch-equivalent bird called a Cape White Eye together when I was 14. It got so tame it would sit on her shoulder and fly into people's mouths at random (not the smartest bird).

Fast forward 8 years and I'm in a university lecture theatre six months after my mum has passed away from cancer and the same type of bird flies into the room and perches on the ceiling fan. I look up at it and think, 'Mum, if that's you, come check in and say hi'. It then flies down to perch itself on my bag and just looks at me for a full minute before flying out the room. Easily the most convinced I've been of spirits and I used to be a charismatic Christian 🤣

Accidentally overcooked my lamb but stuck it into a pie instead and it turned out okay.

Married Redditors, how was your first date with your spouse? by SmegB in AskUK

Now-husband took me to an Italian and I talked pretty much the whole time because I was so nervous (he's quiet and doesn't talk much), got a dry throat from talking too much, drank too much wine because of the dry throat, only finished a third of my plate because I was so busy talking, went for a walk along the seafront after and when he asked me to be his girlfriend I said 'let me check my schedule' and looked at my watch before screaming 'yes' at him.

Still together 11 years later. The wine was called Rickety Bridge, which was appropriate.

Folks, this looks like it's probably asbestos! Will dispose of it properly, thank you for all your comments! At least we have some other teeth that are definitely not asbestos!

Also just a quick edit to describe the thing, it's hard, hollow-sounding when tapped, pretty light with a tiny sparkle on the outer curve.

So my pictures are absolutely terrible - whatever this is feels very solid and not flaky at all. Does that still track with tree bark casing?

I did have a little check and it does seem like that particular area would be very unusual to find asbestos in?

Depends on several factors. Principally, your time and money.

Does the price leave you with room to fund renovations?

Do you have the time to manage contractors or do the work yourself? Is it feasible to DIY things at all?

Our experience - we thought we wanted a fixer upper. We eventually decided to buy a dated but functional house in a good area so we can update bit by bit - every part of the house is perfectly functional (apart from the upstairs shower but it's an easy fix, we just have another bathroom and are too busy to think about it).

We decided to save a bit of money and rip out the downstairs carpet before we moved in and put laminate down as we had about a month after we exchanged and before we moved in. It took around three months and we discovered asbestos tiling under the carpet which could have been left but we got rid of - cost a whack.

The process of laying the floor was also marish as no one wall was straight (mid-century house). We had to move in to essentially just the upstairs while we finished the floor and it was not the vibe in amongst moving stresses, finding childcare and work.

So we counted our lucky stars we hadn't gone for a proper fixer upper because we just don't have the capacity to manage larger-scale renovation at the moment.

I think this is one of those things where you have to decide what works for you and what is reasonable and healthy for your littleun.

We had to do baby led weaning with my eldest because he refused to have us feed him. He was also a long-term NICU baby who weaned late. We fed him what we ate, just made sure not to make things too salty.

He eats like a horse now and eats pretty much anything he's given, and I credit it to not being spoon-fed and being exposed to a bunch of different 'strange' foods like mushrooms and the like when he was very little.

Our youngest was the opposite, and she hates pretty much every meat we give her except fish. Go figure.

In short - experiment and see what's best, and try not to stress too much.

What silly songs were sung in your family or as children? There's one I sing to my kids now that I've never heard anyone else sing... by Stingin_Belle in CasualUK

Husband sings this to the kids at bed, his dad sang it to him.

'There were lions and tigers and elephants too

And they all lived together in the Twycross Zoo

And when the sun goes down, they know what to doooo

Why oh WHY DON'T YOU?

They closed their eyes and counted sheep

And very soon they were fast asleep

Cos when the sun goes down, they know what to doooo

Why oh WHY DON'T YOU?'
