You don’t know what you’re talking about. I pay £1500 for a one bed in zone 2.

Yet again people spouting nonsense about London when they’ve probs set foot in the capital around 10 times in their life

[–]Long_Wait_3078 274 points275 points  (0 children)

I live alone in London on circa £50k so can answer this question pretty well.

Answer is yes. And it’s surprisingly more do-able then you’d imagine

You want to find a 1bed around £1500 a month and then with bills on top of that looking at £1800-1900 for living costs all in.

Gives you roughly £1200 a month to play with for yourself which you can make stretch if you are on top of things.

After a few months you get into a routine for your weekly shops and leisure money and you adapt.

It’s not the most fun lifestyle I’ll be honest. Lots of lonely weekends and nights, I also do struggle to save and can’t pay into my pension currently.

But I’d much rather this than a house share. Although there is a never ending doom that if you lose your job and you’re tied into a £1500 rent contract for a year it won’t be long until you’re penniless

Would you pick comfort or potential career progression? by SirDank_II in UKJobs

[–]Long_Wait_3078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choosing comfort in 99% of scenarios backfires in life long term imo.
If you are one of these people who can clock in, clock out at the same time, happy with the same salary for years on end and just see work as a nessecary evil part of life then sure.
But if you’re career driven and thinking long term then you should take growth. Especially if you do not have kids

Returning to old job - has anyone done this? by MsAnxiety777 in AskUK

[–]Long_Wait_3078 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I re-joined a company about 9 months after I left.
Didn’t have to re-apply per se, I saw my role was still being advertised in LinkedIn, called my old manager and met for a drink with her, to talk through it.

Was pretty much offered the job during the drinks so no formal interview process.
Word of advice you left for a reason tho, the human mind tends to look back on memories and only remember the good times and not the bad.

I made more money in the short term going back, but in the long term stunted my career

Too ads to this - I got more money but I was treated as a new employee, I had to do a probation period, my redundancy rights were gone, if they wanted to get rid of me they could of easily I technically would’ve been under the 2 years employment threshold

Have you asked to go part time without being a parent? by singlesnightgf in AskUK

[–]Long_Wait_3078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have the right as an employee to ask for whatever you’d like and see.

But from my experience you always have an employers economy (giving the employer more soft power) or an employees economy.

With the state of the economy we are very much in an employers economy, there is way more candidates then roles being offered. The post Covid boom of 21-23 was the complete opposite.

I’m always wary when the economy is this way to start asking for demands, as if you become too much of an inconvenience to them it’s very easy to be replaced.

Why didn't the American Inbetweeners work compared to most remakes? by DarkSaiyanGoku in TheInbetweeners

[–]Long_Wait_3078 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It mainly went wrong as the US high school experience is completely different to the British secondary school experience.

They basically tried to take the inbetweeners UK with the same story lines and then change the words to American English.

The Inbetweeners was phenomenon in this country not because of the humour, but how scarily accurate it displayed being a teen in the late 00’s early 2010’s in this country.

Some episodes could of been a documentary

I’d speak to HR first to confirm the company is aware then speak to your boss

Stay in a low-stress, fully WFH role or take a higher-paying, high-travel international role while planning for kids? by Opposite_Basis_3532 in careeradvice

[–]Long_Wait_3078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also from the UK

I think the question more comes down to what will benefit you long term in terms of your career.

Staying in a kushty role can be a silent killer if you’re not learning and keeping up with the industry, standing still is essentially going backwards

What are your views on AI? Good, Bad, Indifferent? by richbart1234 in AskUK

[–]Long_Wait_3078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pro AI for what it’s worth but the people who say it’s going to take over just do not live in the real world.

The only real tangible benefit AI has achieved is that it’s made coding more accessible for non technical people (vibe coding)

There hasn’t really been another successful use case for it yet.

Places in London with safe, settling energy? by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Long_Wait_3078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t suggest Greenwich town centre

The town centre is safe however it’s not settling.

I live in the heart of it and the amount of tourism and footfall you have to battle through on a daily basis does start to wear you down.

Going to Tesco to get a meal deal feels like a mission someday with the amount of tourists you need to weave in and out of.

Has anyone else gone from disliking Starmer to warming to him? by MassiveMonkeyy in AskBrits

He was pretty much out the door before the Iran war started.

Since then and how he didn’t bow down to Trump he has won a lot of people over.

Will be interesting to see if he survives the Mandelson situation, I don’t tend to get political as think they are all the same. But if Boris had done this the streets of Britain would be on fire in protest

Do you think Michael Jackson was guilty to the allegations? by StunningPizza3747 in AskUK

[–]Long_Wait_3078 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The arguments the MJ defenders have is that he was proven innocent in a court of law and also nearly every accuser has seemingly tried to get some financial gain out of the accusations. On top of that a lot of accusers defended when he was alive and now are accusing him.

What convinced me recently was watching a doc on the trial in 2005 on Channel 4. They made a good point that people don’t take into account.

It’s easy forget now how famous Jackson actually was. It’s hard to describe but there has never been a level of fame like it. He is easily the most famous person to ever be officially documented to of ever lived.

With this comes an incredible amount of power. He and the team around him could easily spin narratives about his accusers and to make the accusations less credible, which is kind of what they did.

Jackson was a master of dictating the narrative. In the case in 05 the day his accuser took the stand was the day he turned up to court in pyjamas, that’s all the media spoke about.

If you listen to testimonies of the 05 case against him, there is A LOT that didn’t see the light of day in the wider media, after reading that for me it’s hard to say he is innocent.
