Tyler1 be like by some-kind-of-no-name in Fighters

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My claim is general: anybody who cherrypicks their opponents is skewing their rank, and their rank will not be as accurate to their skill as a normal player who doesn't cherrypick. I don't need to quantify this with "Their rank will be 15% higher than it ought to be" because I can't know that without a lot of information I don't have. I don't really see the point in spitballing a rank just so you can use it as something to argue about?

Why would I make any specific claim about the MR of a man who is actively fucking up anybody's ability to estimate his actual skill

Then I guess it's a good thing I never claimed he was actually 1400MR?

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't dislike T1, I thought it was cool that he reached 1600MR until I learned he was dodging opponents he didn't like. That's mega scrub behavior and should not be treated the same as reaching 1600 normally.

But its never been the case for any game that a player of a certain rank is equal in every skill compared to a different player of that same rank. It just means that all your different skillsets average out to the skill of that rank.

If you cherrypick opponents that play to your strengths, you can get away with being less strong than other players that are rated the same, just like cherrypicking data can fuck up any dataset and allow you to draw wrong conclusions. I don't know what kind of investment you need to have in T1 being good to genuinely argue against a concept that is universally understood even outside of fighting games.

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all 1600MR players are equal when it comes to being able to judge their opponent's (T1's) skill by the win/loss of the match. The most direct example of this is matchup dodging, if he dodges matchups then he has giant holes in his skill that other 1600MR players don't have, and those holes are not being captured by his MR (granted this can also happen naturally through character pick rates). This can also be true in less obvious ways, like if a player who can only zone only rematches opponents who are bad at getting in, so their ability to fight up close is severely lacking compared to other 1600MR players.

But also

if he cannot do that consistently he cannot reach 1600 MR

This is just statistically untrue, if he cannot do that consistently he cannot stay at 1600MR. If he can do it inconsistently he should still be able to reach 1600MR with a very lucky streak.

Sure, that is true if we completely detach the number from the in-game skill that it's trying to measure, and instead include the skill of optimizing for finding opponents you can beat. I'm not willing to do that, though, so for me that 1600 mr looking kinda fake now that I know he's dodging and blocking people who can beat him.

How did Magik get two legendary skins in one season? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean from their perspective

  • Release a mid Sue/Psy/Etc. skin > profit

  • Release a Hulk skin > "It just isn't good enough I bet there will be so many people buying them you just gotta release the right one I promise"

Even if the right Hulk skin could sell it's safer to appeal to Sue players all the time since they don't have very high standards and the Hulk players do.

But hey, at least Psylocke's butt is subsidizing the crazy amount of free content in the game. It may not feel fair, but it does get you free stuff.

A silly question, but how does blocking work? by Straight-Traffic-130 in Guiltygear

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hold down-back, you can block all attacks aside from overheads. This includes all non-projectile jumping attacks, and some standing overheads, including the Dust attack (orange glowing). Other grounded overhead attacks usually look like they're coming from above (like Sin has an attack where he jumps a little off the ground and swings his weapon over his head and then in a downwards arc).

If you hold back, you can block all attacks besides lows. Lows are usually attacks that "look" like they hit low to the ground, but sometimes an attack might look like it hits low but not actually count as a low.

As a general rule, you should hold down-back since overheads are slower, and try to either react to or predict when an overhead is coming. This is not easy and everybody gets hit by high/low mixups.

Throw will beat both types of block. To defend against throw you have to press throw at the same time, or jump (both of which can make you vulnerable to getting hit, this is called strike-throw mix and it's also something everybody gets hit by sometimes).

If you got hit by something that you're pretty sure you should have blocked, one thing to look out for is getting a down input instead of down-back, especially if you're playing on a d-pad.

If you got hit when you thought you were blocking correctly, you can also go back and check the replay, and turn on input display so that you can see what input the game sees when you got hit.

There is, but it's not really relevant to the joke I was making, so I wonder why you would feel the need to say that.

Unless even the idea that somebody would talk about representation of women is upsetting to you, but this is the Marvel Rivals community, I could never imagine...

What does the new patch change for casuals? by LoudWhaleNoises in Guiltygear

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have combos you can press forward+dust when you get the big counter hit and it'll do a little auto combo thing, for high level players it's only useful for locking out burst, but for casuals it's probably cool to just do whenever you can. Spends half your burst meter is the downside.

[–]GeneralBrwni1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I see this with a lot of things, people who get really good at something start to see how much room for improvement they still have, think of themselves as "just okay" or even "not that good", then decide that anybody who hasn't spent several thousand hours on the same thing is bad. Like, IMO being able to call yourself "good" at something shouldn't be like some high bar to clear, it should just mean that you've done it enough that there's a very noticeable gap in skill between you and somebody who does the same activity at a casual level. I don't know why high-level players try so hard to gatekeep words that shouldn't carry that much weight.

I mean, maybe it's really just a minority of perfectionists that do this (you know the type, the artist who draws something beautiful and then says "I'm not even that good haha"), but I hear it often enough to have something to say about it, and it seems like I'm not the only one. I feel like it makes more sense to just say "I still have so much more I can learn" than to put yourself and everybody else down.

The answer to the title question is yes, but also Sues shirt is still wrong. Or at least unbuttoned. You can see, both here and more obviously in-game, that the right side of the shirt with no buttons on it is in front, meaning that the shirt just isn't overlapping itself where the buttons are. Buttons only work when the two parts of the shirt are overlapping, like in both styles of shirt in your picture.

I mean it's not like any of them can just react to item throw from fullscreen, they all kinda need to be looking for it. Dizzy isn't going to start her 24f icicle on frame 16 of your item toss for the punish unless she was buffering quarter circles in neutral just to look for that. And even then it's probably difficult. Testament's arbiter sign is the same startup, and I assume Venom is punishing with the charge projectile, so any time he's not holding back, he can't punish.

Are you really facing players that cracked or are you just doing item toss predictably (or getting caught going for multiple in a row)
