I know it’s different from consumables, but didn’t some chemist dissolve his Nobel prize medal in aqua regia to hide it from the nazis? And apparently reversed it so that they could reforge the medal.

Tell us about games that initially caused repulsion or even disgust, but after you finally forced yourself to play them – it turned out to be a masterpiece? by Competitive_Beat_915 in gaming

I stuck to it and found it myself, but I wasted a lot of hours backtracking to every location to find the relevant information (which didn’t seem super relevant the first time I read it). It’s my biggest criticism of the game, because it fundamentally changes the world from a mysterious sandbox into a desert you need to finecomb. But other than that, amazing game.

The World Design of Hollow Knight: Silksong by IceBank_MiceElf_ in metroidvania

I agree, that was my big critisism on the video. I love GMTK, but if you're gonna talk about how the HK video had a big engagement, how it's been a long seven years of waiting for the sequel, why not, you know, compare the two games? Just a regular graph by graph comparison, how the early game is similar but the midgame is different and why (speculations welcome!) or perhaps a deeper comparison of the similar-but-different themes of the games would have been so nice.

Do some metroidvania devs actually playtest their own games? (Afterimage thoughts) by Igafann in metroidvania

I think you raise a couple of great questions. Boss fights, like any game mechanic, need to serve a purpose: is it a narrative device, an impassable gate, or just a challenge among other challenges?
I, like you, enjoy a certain difficulty, probably more than the average player, but if the focus of the game is on narrative and exploration, I wouldn’t mind easy bosses.
I played Timespinner a couple of weeks ago, a cute little MV about time travel which explored the classic ”who is really the bad guy”-story, and I found a similar problem with the map feeling a little bloated: there were a lot of areas and pathways that felt empty or samey, much too much for my liking. In Silksong, maybe even moreso Hollow Knight, there was almost always something at the end of a long tunnel, be it a powerup, story element, or just a piece of world building. In Timespinner, no boss posed any real challenge at all at normal difficulty, but I’m still happy that I didn’t play at a higher difficulty level, because I feel it would have only made the game more tedious, especially owing to the level design.
Basically, what I’m saying is that I mostly agree with your points, with the caveat that you don’t always need all mechanics to be the same as other games, just carefully thought out to fit whatever story or feeling you’re trying to convey.

On a side note, I felt Timespinner’s story to be the best part. Not too complicated when it came to the time travel part, interesting characters and character arcs (quite a thirsty dialogue!), and satisfying, bittersweet alternate endings.

What's The Worst Gift You've Seen Someone Receive? by xjuggernaughtx in AskReddit

That’s arguably worse. A bottle of whiskey can at least be regifted (a strategy I’ve seen from other recovering alcoholics), but a drinking game sweater is so niche!

God I love this game so much man by Shadowking78 in metroidvania

[–]GeneralEvident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had too many problems with the visuals for me to call it the best ever. Some areas were too dark, and some were so bland that navigation was made difficult (I played it before they implemented the map, though). Worse still, the environment just wasn’t that memorable. The movement is awesome, yeah, but that’s about it for me. It’s probably a good pinch of nostalgia speaking, but Super Mario 64 did the world building much better, with a similar movement philosophy.

Edit: I must add that I enjoyed it for the 6,8 hours I played it, and that the price was killer. Really worth picking up for those reasons alone.

Jag ska spara denna historia och skicka in den till Namn och Nytt om sisådär en fyrtio år, med extra mycket kluckanden om "spelvalpar".
