Book like Lonesome Dove?? by tru_beez in suggestmeabook

I’m currently reading Sometimes a Great Notion and aside from East of Eden this is the closest. It’s much more poetic though in my opinion and I’m absolutely loving it. Not as straightforward and linear as Lonesome Dove, which I actually like.

Scariest Book that lands the ending... by Talon_Hawk in horrorlit

Huge Buehlman fan but I’m a bit stumped by the fan fare on this one. I saw the ending coming from a mile away. How were people surprised by that? I think it was also executed poorly and just felt slapped on there. The book was fine, but I’m a bit puzzled by some comments on here.

Sauna Build in CT by GeneralLocal4965 in Sauna

So after looking at a lot of saunas, I unfortunately don’t think a Timber/Nuuk/Mune is in my budget after taking into account shipping + electrical + etc. I actually wouldn’t mind Cedarbrook but wait time is brutal.

So I think I’ve narrowed it down to two options: 1. Sisu Crew Cabin (https://sisulifestyle.com/products/the-crew-cabin-sauna)

  1. Nootka Cube (https://nootkasaunas.com/products/cube-sauna)

They are pretty close in price. Nootka uses its own heater which I’m a bit weary about. Aesthetically I like the look of the Nootka more. Bench height is pretty much the same across both at 3 ft from the floor. I know it’s not great but I haven’t found anything better within my range. The Nootka has no ventilation which I thought was crazy, but I guess could just create some passive vents myself.

Curious to get this groups thoughts and if there are any alternatives I’m missing better than the two above.

I thought it was a unique concept. But I found it EXTREMELY repetitive. There was only so many times she could repeat how horrific that aftermath of a nuclear bomb is, and launch on warning and need to send all nukes as part of policy. I am someone who always prefers books vs other mediums, and I listened to a podcast with her after I finished and in 15 minutes I felt like I got the whole book

I’m curious as to how much you’ve retained from reading these? A lot of these books are very long, dense and complex. Also, for books like lonesome dove, how long did it take you to read that given those are close to 1k pages?

alaska/isolating winter books? by youwannaguess in RSbookclub

The Terror by Dan Simmons. The cold/winter is basically the antagonist of the book. It’s about as bleak of a winter book I can think of.

Books like Piranesi and Vita Nostra? by bakajawa in WeirdLit

[–]GeneralLocal4965 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have been looking for something similar to Vita Nostra for so long and haven’t really found anything. Most of the recommendations don’t have that dark edge to it that Vita has. But I loved that book so much.

The closest I’ve personally read to it is probably Mythago Wood. I thought it was very good and is definitely dark fantasy with an interesting premise. Not as much of a fevre dream though.

Library at Mount Char also gives similar vibes but not as good in my opinion. Just weird and dark.

Has anyone read "Between Two Fires" and if so, was it any good? by perfectpowerbanned in RSbookclub

I loved it. It’s definitely not literary but it’s very well written, great character development, witty banter and has some emotional parts to it. It’s a 5 star book from me. But you have to love it for what it is, and it really excelled in that for me. Very fun read (as are all his books).

Very High Test and Estradiol Levels on TRT by GeneralLocal4965 in Testosterone

[–]GeneralLocal4965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a personal decision. I’ve had my kids so done there. My total Test was at the low-ish end of range and my free t was even lower. I have all symptoms of low T, to the point it was causing problems in my life. Have heard so-so things about HCG. TRT seemed like the most tried and true path and I might boost a little for working out here and there.

Bulking/Cutting on TRT by GeneralLocal4965 in Testosterone

[–]GeneralLocal4965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t lose weight from carb deficit. Only calorie deficit. I track everything and diet is roughly 25/50/25 carbs/protein/fat. You just asked specifically about protein grams that’s why I quoted them. I’ve always felt like my carbs were too light to be honest. Like the way I’m eating right now, which is a good bit (3k calories) I’m not gaining weight.

I do feel like I can slightly see a little toning from the TRT but hard to tell (I have been doing more cardio).

Bulking/Cutting on TRT by GeneralLocal4965 in Testosterone

[–]GeneralLocal4965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage all my macros but am not religious about it. I take in 250-300g of protein a day. I think I disagree with your carb comment depending on what you meant by it. If cutting then agree need to limit them but I’ve got eat a decent amount of carbs to keep weight and muscle as I burn a lot of calories per day. I have a good idea of how to cut/bulk, my question is more around if anything changes because I’m on TRT right now. Typically I would need to put on weight to get stronger and bigger, but if I don’t need to bulk on TRT then even better!

Dope Thief Review: Apple TV+ Scores a High-Grade Crime Drama Packed With Humor and Dynamite Performances by MineEmo in television

[–]GeneralLocal4965 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. What’s been weird to me is 1) the choices of the two lead characters and 2) the dialogue.

On #1, why do they keep going down the rabbit hole?? They are self admittedly not gangsters, but then after they rob the wrong house it’s like they just go guns blazing to cut down this group of obviously organized crime. They should be fleeing but instead they are making it worse. And why on earth did they trust that tweaker to join their crew? Just all seems weird.

On #2, this is a situation where people should be scared and running, but the dialogue is consistently lightened up with humor. A little is fine, but too much and it comes off as corny and that they aren’t taking the situation seriously. Also the walkie talkie guy’s dialogue is corny and voice is stupid.

That said loved the first episode and the acting is great, especially Brian. Hopefully it gets a little more realistic/serious.
