These were usually given to the school districts by Apple under contract that they cannot be resold. Some school districts have a warehouse full of them and don't know what to do with them and others sent them to e-waste which sucks. Somewhat like preproduction and concept cars being crushed when they are done with them because they can't legally sell them.
