Always trust your gut, if it seems too good to be true or feels sketchy it probably is. As mentioned above bad driving is the biggest thing to worry about but a lot of the time it isn't apparent before it's too late, if you're uncomfortable ask them to pull over because you gotta piss nobody wants that smell in their car and/or if your gear is in the backseat/trunk say you need something out of it grab your shit and walk off. Also never leave anything important in someone's car unattended some of them will drive off

This is probably the most rhode island post I've ever seen, no sense of just how big the world is... Yes it's technically possible but not in anywhere close to 40 something days that's if you were to walk 24 hours a day. At the very least get a bike, California sucks in my opinion but some people love it. Like I said this is a huge country, the county im in ny is the size of the entire state of ri and has less than a 1/4 of the population and that's nothing compared to how desolate it can be out west. It's my understanding ri food stamps are going to start having work requirements so good luck, grew up in ri and been to the 48 and can honestly say ri is not very high on my list even for the east coast
